Book excerpt: A bold expression of a fledgling republic's aspirations and bravado, the American bald eagle has been designed, drawn, illustrated, stamped, engraved, painted, sculpted, carved, photographed, and etched by thousands of artists and artisans since 1782, when it first appeared as the central figure on the Great Seal of the United States. As America's most versatile emblem, the eagle emanates confidence during peace and prosperity, and strength during crisis and war; as a North American native species it exemplifies nature's grandeur and the advance of conservation. In all, the bald eagle is a stirring national symbol made all the more vibrant by its indisputable dominion in the sky. American Eagle: A Visual History of Our National Emblem is a visual survey that explores the eagle in American life. A remarkable book that represents American culture, politics, and history, American Eagle will be the definitive source of this national icon for generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Picky Eagle explains why the United States stopped annexing territory by focusing on annexation's domestic consequences, both political and normative. It describes how the US rejection of further annexations, despite its rising power, set the stage for twentieth-century efforts to outlaw conquest. In contrast to conventional accounts of a nineteenth-century shift from territorial expansion to commercial expansion, Richard W. Maass argues that US ambitions were selective from the start. By presenting twenty-three case studies, Maass examines the decision-making of US leaders facing opportunities to pursue annexation between 1775 and 1898. US presidents, secretaries, and congressmen consistently worried about how absorbing new territories would affect their domestic political influence and their goals for their country. These leaders were particularly sensitive to annexation's domestic costs where xenophobia interacted with their commitment to democracy: rather than grant political representation to a large alien population or subject it to a long-term imperial regime, they regularly avoided both of these perceived bad options by rejecting annexation. As a result, US leaders often declined even profitable opportunities for territorial expansion, and they renounced the practice entirely once no desirable targets remained. In addition to offering an updated history of the foundations of US territorial expansion, The Picky Eagle adds important nuance to previous theories of great-power expansion, with implications for our understanding of US foreign policy and international relations.

Book An Eagle Nation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carter Revard
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book An Eagle Nation written by Carter Revard and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We are given this world and some time with friends. How time dawned on mind and was beaded into language amazes me the way an orb-spider's web or a computerchip does. . ". Carter Revard, Osage Indian poet, Rhodes scholar, and professor of medieval English literature, shares both this amazement and his amazing command of language in this first retrospective collection of forty published and unpublished pieces written from 1970 to 1991. As much at home reading Old English manuscripts at the British Museum as he is taking part in Osage ceremonials, Revard possesses an exact knowledge of European poetic forms along with an equally impressive knowledge of Native American traditional narrative. When combined, these seemingly disparate genres produce literary tensions that Revard handles with skill and grace. Revard's poems may be set in Oklahoma, across America, or in Europe; they may even straddle the map, as in "Homework at Oxford", where a late-night contemplation of Breughel's "Adoration of the Magi" triggers images of home and conveys a sense of global connectedness. His poems concern a wide range of themes and reflect a unique blending of poetic and cultural traditions, rendered in voices ranging from quiet reflection to hot invective. "I am grateful that water and language, time and space, memory and writing have been given us", says Revard, "and I've set their star-stuff into the best poems I could for you who hold this book". Those who have long admired his talents will be grateful for it, while those reading him for the first time will rejoice in the discovery.

Book excerpt: Forced into a neutral Estonian port for repairs during the chaos of the opening days of World War II, the Polish submarine, Eagle and her crew are betrayed by their captain and captured by Nazi sympathizers. The crew, however, isn’t content to sit out the war. With help from unexpected sources—a naval attaché with the British Embassy and a courageous American reporter and her photographer sidekick—they overcome their captors, regain control of Eagle, and escape. The German’s are convinced Eagle's crew has no stomach for a fight and will seek refuge in Sweden. But the Poles have something else in mind—join up with the British Fleet and continue fighting against their homeland's Nazi conquerors. They face stiff odds. Eagle has little food and water, few torpedoes, and no sea charts. And before she can rendezvous with the British somewhere in the North Sea, she must traverse the Baltic, which has become little more than a Nazi-controlled lake. This story is inspired by the exploits of the Polish submarine, Orzel, during the early weeks of World War II.

Book Flight of the Eagle

  • Publisher : Encounter Books
  • Release : 2014-10-07
  • ISBN : 1594037590
  • Pages : 739 pages

Download or read book Flight of the Eagle written by Conrad Black and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like an eagle, American colonists ascended from the gulley of British dependence to the position of sovereign world power in a period of merely two centuries. Seizing territory in Canada and representation in Britain; expelling the French, and even their British forefathers, American leaders George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson paved their nation’s way to independence. With the first buds of public relation techniques—of communication, dramatization, and propaganda—America flourished into a vision of freedom, of enterprise, and of unalienable human rights. In Flight of the Eagle, Conrad Black provides a perspective on American history that is unprecedented. Through his analysis of the strategic development of the United States from 1754-1992, Black describes nine “phases” of the strategic rise of the nation, in which it progressed through grave challenges, civil and foreign wars, and secured a place for itself under the title of “Superpower.” Black discredits prevailing notions that our unrivaled status is the product of good geography, demographics, and good luck. Instead, he reveals and analyzes the specific strategic decisions of great statesmen through the ages that transformed the world as we know it and established America’s place in it.
