Book excerpt: Rony Morel shows us first-hand what it's like to grow up in the mean streets of New York City where violence, corruption, alcohol/drugs, partying and women more than often prevail. He moved to (Highbridge) Bronx, NY, where he was raised alongside serval future stars (Cardi B, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Westside Parle, Desi Rodriguez and Hennessy Carolina). In pursuit of his own success, he left to attend an out-of-state college leaving behind all his drastic encounters which consisted of so many violent fights, police authority, life-threatening events, romantic panthers and vacations (in and out of the country). However, college only served him as a 'hope' for a better future. Due to his contagious lifestyle, it managed to follow him hundreds of miles where even in foreign territory he was still fighting, partying wild and running into trouble with the law! This swirling life of constant fun and danger caused Rony Morel to reach rock-bottom several times but what led him to finally change his reality was brewed one night on a neighbouring dorm mate's small hard couch where Rony trespassed daily as he hid from the law. Rony shares all his knowledge, wisdom and advice on how he miraculously changed his life around completely and has become rather successful in his entrepreneurship. He's currently the president of three companies (Morel Fashion, Shop Morel and IMS - Internal Marketing Solution) and he's striving in the actor and model side of the entertainment industry. Through his book, Each One Teach One, he reveals it all from bad to worse to good but more importantly he shares compelling knowledge and insists that it could change one's perspective on life while also helping individuals achieve success/self-worth!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E pluribus unum, words that served as this nation's motto for much of our history-out of many, one. And yet today, as the map of U.S. House seats after the 2014 election shows, we feel more divided than we have in a long time. Whether we have marriage, religion, privacy, or speech in mind, the illusory promise of safety has seduced many in our nation to believe that greater controls will bring greater security. As with other rights, so with guns. In many ways, gun rights are symbolic of all the others. A leader who genuinely trusts the people with firearms is someone more inclined to accept that power flows from the people to the government, not the other way. But with Republicans and Democrats less and less willing to share common ground on essential liberties, rights are divided among the special interests believed to value them piece by piece until each one is easier to reduce, restrict, and ultimately remove. The purpose of this book is to get gun owners and others sympathetic to the cause of rights to see past partisan squabbling to the deeper truth that as Benjamin Franklin observed at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, "We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Each one, teach one, or the rights we value will fade into a forgotten past.

In 1955, he founded Laubach Literacy, which helped introduce about 150,000 Americans to reading each year and had grown to embrace 34 developing countries. An estimated 2.7 million people worldwide were learning to read through Laubach-affiliated programs. Book excerpt: From her dorm room at Princeton University, twenty-one-year-old college senior Wendy Kopp decided to launch a movement to improve public education in America. In One Day, All Children... , she shares the remarkable story of Teach For America, a non-profit organization that sends outstanding college graduates to teach for two years in the most under-resourced urban and rural public schools in America. These books are game-infested with points and views of the world from a young NIGGAs (Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished) perspective, full of random but organized thoughts, hoping to help you better understand things you dont understand. Book For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood and the Rest of Y all Too

Download or read book For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood and the Rest of Y all Too written by Christopher Emdin and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Best Seller "Essential reading for all adults who work with black and brown young people...Filled with exceptional intellectual sophistication and necessary wisdom for the future of education."—Imani Perry, National Book Award Winner author of South To America An award-winning educator offers a much-needed antidote to traditional top-down pedagogy and promises to radically reframe the landscape of urban education for the better Drawing on his own experience of feeling undervalued and invisible in classrooms as a young man of color, Dr. Christopher Emdin has merged his experiences with more than a decade of teaching and researching in urban America. He takes to task the perception of urban youth of color as unteachable, and he challenges educators to embrace and respect each student’s culture and to reimagine the classroom as a site where roles are reversed and students become the experts in their own learning. Putting forth his theory of Reality Pedagogy, Emdin provides practical tools to unleash the brilliance and eagerness of youth and educators alike—both of whom have been typecast and stymied by outdated modes of thinking about urban education. With this fresh and engaging new pedagogical vision, Emdin demonstrates the importance of creating a family structure and building communities within the classroom, using culturally relevant strategies like hip-hop music and call-and-response, and connecting the experiences of urban youth to indigenous populations globally. Merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, Emdin demonstrates how by implementing the “Seven Cs” of reality pedagogy in their own classrooms, urban youth of color benefit from truly transformative education.

  • Author : Josh Kaufman
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2013-06-13

  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book The First 20 Hours written by Josh Kaufman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980s Britain, while the country failed to reckon with the legacies of its empire, a black, transnational sensibility was emerging in its urban areas. In Handsworth, an inner-city neighborhood of Birmingham, black residents looked across the Atlantictoward African and Afro-Caribbean social and political cultures and drew upon them while navigating the inequalities of their locale. For those of the Windrush generation and their British-born children, this diasporic inheritance became a core influence on cultural and political life. Through rich case studies, including photographic representations of the neighborhood, Black Handsworth takes readers inside pubs, churches, political organizations, domestic spaces, and social clubs to shed light on the experiences and everyday lives of black residents during this time. The result is a compelling and sophisticated study of black globality in the making of post-colonial Britain.
