Book One Foot in This World One Foot in the Next

Download or read book One Foot in This World One Foot in the Next written by E Attwood and published by Austin Macauley. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could it be possible for a dyslexic child with a faraway look in his eyes to aspire to anything worthwhile, yet buried deep within the soul of this young man was a burning desire to be the best at whatever destiny laid in his path. When the time was right, spirit awoke the gifts he was born with that could be used to help those who were predestined to cross his path, and so began a journey marked by conjunctures that defied logical explanation, and see him succeed in a field where the best academic education would probably have failed him. To go from a planned suicide to a successful healing retreat in an exotic location doesn't sound possible or probable no matter how vivid your imagination, but there are things in the unseen world that have perplexed the most brilliant of minds for centuries. This journey saw him meet and marry an earth angel who walks this path beside him and has witnessed the seeming miracles that happen as his hands touch those in need, so from a foretold carved stone arch to a crossing of paths in an unlikely foreign bar, it all had to be planned by an unseen hand.

Book Five Miles Away A World Apart

Download or read book Five Miles Away A World Apart written by James E. Ryan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that, half a century after Brown v. Board of Education, educational opportunities remain so unequal for black and white students, not to mention poor and wealthy ones? In his important new book, Five Miles Away, A World Apart, James E. Ryan answers this question by tracing the fortunes of two schools in Richmond, Virginia--one in the city and the other in the suburbs. Ryan shows how court rulings in the 1970s, limiting the scope of desegregation, laid the groundwork for the sharp disparities between urban and suburban public schools that persist to this day. The Supreme Court, in accord with the wishes of the Nixon administration, allowed the suburbs to lock nonresidents out of their school systems. City schools, whose student bodies were becoming increasingly poor and black, simply received more funding, a measure that has proven largely ineffective, while the independence (and superiority) of suburban schools remained sacrosanct. Weaving together court opinions, social science research, and compelling interviews with students, teachers, and principals, Ryan explains why all the major education reforms since the 1970s--including school finance litigation, school choice, and the No Child Left Behind Act--have failed to bridge the gap between urban and suburban schools and have unintentionally entrenched segregation by race and class. As long as that segregation continues, Ryan forcefully argues, so too will educational inequality. Ryan closes by suggesting innovative ways to promote school integration, which would take advantage of unprecedented demographic shifts and an embrace of diversity among young adults. Exhaustively researched and elegantly written by one of the nation's leading education law scholars, Five Miles Away, A World Apart ties together, like no other book, a half-century's worth of education law and politics into a coherent, if disturbing, whole. It will be of interest to anyone who has ever wondered why our schools are so unequal and whether there is anything to be done about it.

Book Experiences from the Threshold and Beyond

Download or read book Experiences from the Threshold and Beyond written by Are Thoresen and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘There is a physical world, which we all accept as real, but there is also a spiritual world, which interpenetrates this material world and is its cause and foundation. Between these two worlds exists a threshold that can be felt, seen clairvoyantly, traversed and passed through by anyone with a real desire to do so... At this threshold there is a guardian, whose task is to stop humans from passing across it unprepared...’ – From the Introduction Based on first-hand knowledge, Are Thoresen offers insights into the meaning of the threshold to the spiritual world. He describes his own experiences in encountering this threshold and going beyond it. But there are many thresholds to the spiritual world, he says, and many ways to pass them – as there are many aspects to the ‘guardian of the threshold’ and versions of the so-called ‘animals at the threshold’. The worlds beyond, too, have a variety of different constructions – or, as the Bible says: ‘In my Father’s house are many mansions’. The author describes the methods and techniques for opening the spiritual sense organs required to cross the threshold, and clarifies the differences between Imagination (seeing spiritual ‘pictures’), Inspiration (understanding those pictures) and Intuition (living ‘inside’ the spiritual reality). Structuring the book on his own biography, Thoresen conveys many of the lessons he has learnt through decades of familiarity with the invisible dimensions. However, he warns that there is only one good reason to attempt to cross the threshold, and that is to serve God and humanity in the name of love. If we do it out of curiosity, or to enhance our personal development, it would be better not to try.
