Book Relativistic Dynamics of a Charged Sphere

Download or read book Relativistic Dynamics of a Charged Sphere written by Arthur Yaghjian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a remarkable book. Arthur Yaghjian is by training and profession an electrical engineer; but he has a deep interest in fundamental questions usually reserved for physicists. Working largely in isolation he has studied the relevant papers of an enormous literature accumulated over a century. The result is a fresh and novel approach to old problems and to their solution. Physicists since Lorentz have looked at the problem of the equations of motion of a charged object primarily as a problem for the description of a fundamental particle, typically an electron. Yaghjian considers a mac- scopic object, a spherical insulator with a surface charge. was therefore not tempted to take the point limit, and he thus avoided the pitfalls that have misguided research in this field since Dirac's famous paper of 1938. Perhaps the author's greatest achievement was the discovery that one does not need to invoke quantum mechanics and the correspondence pr- ciple in order to exclude the unphysical solutions (runaway and pre-acc- eration solutions). Rather, as he discovered, the derivation of the classical equations of motion from the Maxwell-Lorentz equations is invalid when the time rate of change of the dynamical variables too large (even in the relativistic case). Therefore, solutions that show such behavior are inc- sistent consequences. The classical theory thus shown to be physically consistent by itself. It embarrassing--to say the least--that this obs- vation had not been made before.

Book E Government for Public Managers

Download or read book E Government for Public Managers written by Robert A. Cropf and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handy guide and supplemental text examines trends in information and communication technology (ICT) that impact the day-to-day operations of federal, state, and local government. It seeks to improve service delivery, human resource administration, political participation, education, and citizen input (e-democracy), while at the same time recognizes that with ICT’s great promise comes great peril in the form of erosion of personal privacy (e-surveillance). Through the use of numerous examples and exercises, Robert Cropf helps students and practitioners alike explore the ways technological change shapes public policy, develop useful tools and skills for working in or with e-government, and understand the role that social media plays in helping to spark political, economic, and social change.

Book Sphere Packings Lattices and Groups

Download or read book Sphere Packings Lattices and Groups written by J.H. Conway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this timely, definitive, and popular book continues to pursue the question: what is the most efficient way to pack a large number of equal spheres in n-dimensional Euclidean space? The authors also continue to examine related problems such as the kissing number problem, the covering problem, the quantizing problem, and the classification of lattices and quadratic forms. Like the first edition, the second edition describes the applications of these questions to other areas of mathematics and science such as number theory, coding theory, group theory, analog-to-digital conversion and data compression, n-dimensional crystallography, and dual theory and superstring theory in physics. Results as of 1992 have been added to the text, and the extensive bibliography - itself a contribution to the field - is supplemented with approximately 450 new entries.

Book The Democratic Public Sphere

Download or read book The Democratic Public Sphere written by Christina Fiig and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in well-established democratic societies, the political system currently faces a crisis of civic engagement and participation. Increasingly, this lack of engagement and the accompanying erosion of institutional legitimacy result in antidemocratic, populist currents gaining ground. It is an important challenge for both the humanities and the social sciences to analyse this crisis and discuss possible answers that may contribute to strengthening the position of the democratic public sphere in the political process, thus emphasising the crucial role of civic engagement and participation in renewing democracy. The articles in this volume seek the sources for such democratic innovations in a variety of existing, less formalised practices and experiences in public space: in citizens' forums and other concrete arenas for democratic debate and participation in the media in general, including social media and other digital platforms; in social movements; and in artistic interventions in the public sphere. The volume presents selected and edited papers and keynote lectures from the international research conference The Democratic Public Sphere - Current Challenges and Prospects, which was held at Aarhus University on November 5-7, 2015. It includes contributions by keynote speakers Mark E. Warren, Nick Couldry, Donatella della Porta, and Stephen Duncombe.
