It can be physically debilitating and psychologically damaging to one's self image. Current treatments focus on symptom suppression. About 20% of patients have recalcitrant dyshidrosis after treatment leaving them debilitated and unable to work. There is a need to establish a more effective treatment plan to maximize treatment for recalcitrant dyshidrotic patients. Methods: A systematic search using PUBMED accessed from the Cornell Medical Library was performed to identify peer-reviewed studies. Terms used in the search include dyshidrosis, pompholyx, urea cream, hand eczema, mometasone furoate, eczema treatment, dyshidrosis treatment, and palmoplantar eczema. Results: Results of the search demonstrated limited data in the effectiveness of current treatment options including mometasone furoate, a corticosteroid, for the treatment of dyshidrosis. Current studies show symptom relief for the majority of hand eczema patients after a nine week course of mometasone furoate. No studies directly investigate the use of mometasone furoate on dyshidrosis. Major side effects of long term corticosteroid use include skin atrophy, thinning, and itching. There is a 30% recalcitrance rate of dyshidrosis using botulinum and 15% using phototherapy. Conclusion: Further studies need to be developed to investigate the effectiveness of mometasone furoate against dyshidrotic patients. A search for more effective treatment plans to lower the incidence of recalcitrant dyshidrosis using urea as an adjunct therapy in conjunction with mometasone furoate is warranted.
