Notre étude se structure autour de deux axes centraux : l'analyse du processus d'innovation au coeur du changement technologique et la prise en compte des interactions entre les principaux acteurs du bouclage du cycle de vie du produit. Notre approche repose sur une représentation stylisée de la prévention des déchets centrée sur une appréhension des produits en tant que technologies multi-caractistiques dont l'évolution dépend étroitement des choix d'innovation des firmes reliées aux consommateurs et aux acteurs de la post-consommation, dans un contexte de pression règlementaire. Sur cette base, nous étudions la dynamique technologique de la prévention des déchets à l'aide d'un modèle de micro-simulation. Le développement des produits verts est appréhendé à travers une série de processus mettant en jeu des compromis et arbitrages multiples entre les dimensions technologiques, règlementaires et les exigences des consommateurs. Cette approche dynamique nous permet d'examiner l'efficacité des stratégies d'innovation environnementale différenciées de firmes en concurrence sur un marché. Il s'agit également de mettre en évidence les déterminants principaux des performances technologiques, économiques et environnementales des agents, ainsi que d'étudier les effets sur la dynamique d'une règlementation basée sur le principe de responsabilité élargie du producteur

La première partie explore les déterminants microéconomiques de l'adoption des innovations environnementales, d'abord de l'ensemble des firmes industrielles, ensuite selon leur orientation stratégique, i.e selon que leur comportement éco-innovateur soit porté par des dynamiques d'offre, de demande ou règlementaires. La seconde partie étudie les relations de complémentarités qui se nouent entre les changements dans l'organisation de la firme et l'adoption d'innovations environnementales et met en lumière les dynamiques organisationnelles associées à l'adoption d'un Système de Management Environnemental. Enfin, une dernière partie est consacrée à mettre en évidence la coévolution entre les comportements microéconomiques d'adoption d'innovations environnementales et les systèmes sectoriels d'innovation. La thèse montre que les processus d'innovation environnementale résultent de combinaisons toujours spécifiques, à l'échelle microéconomique, de logiques internes et externes à la firme. Ces spécifications renvoient à des processus de complémentarités intraorganisationnels ainsi que des processus d'interaction entre la firme et son environnement.
