Book Fundamental Processes of Atomic Dynamics

Download or read book Fundamental Processes of Atomic Dynamics written by J.S.S. Briggs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced study Institute "Fundamental Processes of Atomic Dynamics" held in Maratea. Italy from September 20th to October 2nd 1987. The institute and this volume were conceived as a natural complement to previous institutes held in Maratea (1982) and in Santa Flavia (1984. ) whose proceedings are to be found in NATO ASI Series B vol. 103 and 134 respectively. The subject matter of these institutes was the study of the funda mental processes occurring in the interactions of atoms with photons. electrons and heavy-ions. The aim has been to unify these processes in a coherent experimen tal and theoretical approach. The present volume brings this approach up to date and contains in addition. for contrast and variety. a description of similar dynamical processes in the study of clusters and surfaces. The institute was opened with a lecture by Joe Macek in which he summarised the current status of atomic collision research. propounded the philosophy of a unified approach to structure, fragmentation and collision and posed the outstanding questions in the field. This lecture forms the introduction to this volume. The subject matter was divided into experiment and theory with the lectures inter-linked so that the one could re-inforce the other. The whole of the theoretical part of the institute was organised by Ugo Fano as an on-going symposium.

Book excerpt: This textbook is intended for all graduate students and researchers interested in the young and rapidly evolving field of microclusters. In many ways microclusters (consisting typically of 10-103 atoms) can be considered as a new phase of matter, intermediate between a solid and a molecule or, alternatively, between the macroscopic and microscopic world. The interest in microclusters is motivated both by their fundamentally new physical properties and by their potential applications in areas such as electronics, catalysis, chemical engineering, and photography. The book is designed for newcomers to the field and offers the reader a lucid description of the fundamental physics of all types of microclusters.

Book Contribution of Clusters Physics to Materials Science and Technology

Download or read book Contribution of Clusters Physics to Materials Science and Technology written by Joel Davenas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade there has been an increasing interest in clusters and small particles because of the peculiar proper ties induced by their large area to volume ratio. For that reason small particles are often considered as an intermediate state of matter at the border between atomic (or molecular) chemistry, and physics of the condensed matter. The importance of the surface effect can explain the anomalous properties, for example the exis tence of the five fold symmetry observed in different circumstan ces '(beams of rare gas clusters, gold particles deposited on a substrate). However the question of the critical size at which the transition to bulk properties occurs cannot be simply answered, since the reply depends on the peculiar property which is studied. The importance of the size effect was emphasized in the last International Meetings. However the situation remains confused in most cases since the exact role of the cluster environment cannot be clearly elucidated and is a main difficulty, except in cluster beam experiments. In fact ideally free clusters constitute a labo ratory exception. In most applications small particles must be supported on a surface or embedded in a matrix, in order to be stabilized, which obviously shows the role of the environment.

Download or read book Microcluster Physics written by Satoru Sugano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing graduate students and researchers with funda mental knowledge indispensable for entering the new field of "microclus 3 ters". Microclusters consisting of 10 to 10 atoms exhibit neither the pro perties of the corresponding bulk nor those of the corresponding molecule of a few atoms. The microclusters may be considered to form a new phase of materials lying between macroscopic solids and microscopic particles such as atoms and molecules, showing both macroscopic and microscopic features. However, research into such"a riew phase has been left untouched until recent years by the development of the quantum theory of matter. The microscopic features of microclusters were first revealed by ob serving anomalies of the mass spectrum of a Na cluster beam at specific sizes, called magic numbers. Then it was experimentally confirmed that the magic numbers come from the shell structure of valence electrons. Being stimulated by these epoch-making findings in metal microclusters and aided by progress of the experimental techniques producing relatively dense, non interacting micro clusters of various sizes in the form of micro cluster beams, the research field of microclusters has developed rapidly in these 5 to 7 years. The progress is also due to the improvement of computers and com putational techniques, which have made it possible to perform ab initio cal culations of the atomic and electronic structure of smaller microclusters, as well as to carry out computer simulations of their dynamics.

Book Heterogeneous Atmospheric Chemistry

Download or read book Heterogeneous Atmospheric Chemistry written by David R. Schryer and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1982 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 26. In the past few years it has become increasingly clear that heterogeneous, or multiphase, processes play an important role in the atmosphere. Unfortunately the literature on the subject, although now fairly extensive, is still rather dispersed. Furthermore, much of the expertise regarding heterogeneous processes lies in fields not directly related to atmospheric science. Therefore, it seemed desirable to bring together for an exchange of ideas, information, and methodologies the various atmospheric scientists who are actively studying heterogeneous processes as well as other researchers studying similar processes in the context of other fields.
