Book Dynamics of Liquid Filled Projectiles

Download or read book Dynamics of Liquid Filled Projectiles written by George Schlenker and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a collection of analytic models which treat various aspects of the dynamics of liquid-filled, spin-stabilized projectiles. Several numerical examples are given applicable to eight-inch ammunition. Although idealized, these examples may provide understanding of the behavior of real systems such as the XM736 binary round. Chapter 1 examines the change in inertial characteristics with a change in liquid configuration. Chapter 2 treats the dynamics of spinup of the liquid fill. Also considered are the range and deflection sensitivity to configuration change, and the question of 'ballistic similitude' with a comparable solid-filled projectile. The distribution of energy in the liquid and an approximation for the frequency of a fundamental vibratory mode of the liquid are addressed in Chapter 3. The frequency of vibration is compared with precessional and nutational frequencies of the projectile during flight to assess the likelihood of stability problems. Insofar as the approximations made here are applicable, one can conclude that the XM736 projectile is a reasonable ballistic match to the M509. Difference in mean point of impact can be corrected by small adjustments in aiming. The XM736 is judged to be ballistically stable but will likely have a somewhat larger ballistic dispersion than either the M509 or M106 projectiles. (Author).

Book Interior Fluid Dynamics of Liquid Filled Projectiles

Download or read book Interior Fluid Dynamics of Liquid Filled Projectiles written by Thorwald Herbert and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and numerical studies were conducted to analyze the flow in spinning and coning liquid-filled payload cylinders and to provide efficient tools for estimating and calculating the liquid moments as input data for flight simulations. Earlier analytical studies for cylinders of large aspect ratio were extended to the nonlinear problem to provide estimates for all moments. This perturbation analysis is currently used to investigate the influence of partial liquid fills, central rods, and two-fluid fills on the moments. A new method was developed to obtain the moments from volume integrals rather than surface integrals and thus increase the accuracy of the results at fixed numerical approximation. An efficient spectral code was developed for routine application to solve the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Utility of this code for efficient flight simulations has been demonstrated. The code has been applied to investigate liquid moments, velocity field, and pressure field in situations of pure forcing as well as resonance with inertial waves at Reynolds numbers up to 2000. For the linearized problem, a simplified set of equations has been developed that permits closed-form solutions for spatial eigenfunctions and highly efficient solution by spectral methods. Keywords: Projectile stability; Liquid payloads; Aeroballistics.

Book Engineering Design Handbook Liquid Filled Projectile Design

Download or read book Engineering Design Handbook Liquid Filled Projectile Design written by ARMY MATERIEL COMMAND ALEXANDRIA VA. and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is one of a series on ballistics. It deals with the dynamics of liquid-filled projectiles which are known to behave in an unpredictable manner in flight. Until rather recently the causes of such misbehavior were not well understood. Whenever such problems arose in practice they were usually treated on an ad hoc basis, i.e., by engineering trial and error methods. Such methods, as a rule, are time-consuming and expensive. Recently, however, considerable progress has been made in this field. For certain limited geometries of cavity shapes, such as the cylinder or near cylinder, it is now possible to give the designer a set of simple rules for the rational design of liquid-filled projectiles that will be dynamically stable in flight. Book DYNAMICS OF LIQUID FILLED SHELL AIDS FOR DESIGNERS

Download or read book DYNAMICS OF LIQUID FILLED SHELL AIDS FOR DESIGNERS written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballistic Research Laboratories Memorandum Report 1477 (Karpov, May 1963) AD-410 484 includes a discussion of Stewartson's stability analysis of liquid-filled projectiles, and 'Tables of Poles and Residues' needed for quantitative design use of the analysis. Various design problems show that an extended tabulation is needed, and the present report provides this extension. The new tabulation (Appendix B) covers a nondimensional frequency range of 0.00 to 0.70 in increments of 0.02 and a range of cavity fill ratios of 20 to 100 percent in maximum increments of ten percent. A brief description of Stewartson's analysis is also given in the report. Emphasis is placed on the physical significance of the assumptions and results of the theory rather than its mathematical detail. The intent is to provide the novice designer of liquid-filled shell with an appreciation and first working knowledge of the analysis. Additionally, the summary of the theory is used to point out the significant advances that have been made in understanding liquid-filled shell problems since the publication of Ballistic Research Laboratories Memorandum Report No. 1477.

Book Measurement of Spin Decay and Instability of Liquid filled Projectiles Via Telemetry

Download or read book Measurement of Spin Decay and Instability of Liquid filled Projectiles Via Telemetry written by Andrew Mark and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spin history and instability of projectiles containing a right circular cylinder filled with a liquid are determined over long flight paths. Based on past experience, stability or instability is achieved simply by adjusting the volumetric fill within the cylinder. The motion of the projectile is determined by judiciously placing photovoltaic cells behind narrow slits in the ogive portion of the projectile and sensing its orientation with respect to the sun. The cell outputs are amplified and used to drive a subcarrier oscillator which in turn modulates a P-band radio frequency oscillator. The result is transmitted to ground and recorded on tape. The spin history of a liquid-filled projectile is significantly different from a physically identical but dry projectile. Instability is indicated during the spin-up phase of the liquid motion. Book Dynamic Stability of Bodies Containing Fluid

Download or read book Dynamic Stability of Bodies Containing Fluid written by N.N. Moiseyev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of bodies containing fluids is a subject of long-standing im portance in many technical applications. The stability of motion of such bodies, in particular, has been the subject of study by Soviet engineers and applied mathematicians who have brought their fuH powers of analysis to bear on the problem, and have succeeded in developing a very weH-founded body of theory. It is difficult to find a more striking example anywhere of the application of the classical methods of analytical mechanics, together with more modern concepts of stability analysis, in such a comprehensive and elegent form as that presented by Profs. Moiseyev and Rumyantsev. Therefore, it is highly significant that this recent monograph has been trans lated and made available to the English-speaking community. H. NORMAN ABRAMSON San Antonio July, 1967 v Foreword During the last 15-20 years, problems of dynamics of rigid bodies with fluid-filled cavities have increasingly attracted the attention of scientists.

Download or read book Design for Control of Projectile Flight Characteristics written by United States. Army Materiel Command and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents a general survey of the principal factors affecting the flight of projectiles, and describes the methods commonly used for predicting and influencing the flight performance. The coefficients which characterize the aerodynamic forces and moments of a moving body are identified, methods for determining the coefficients applicable to a projectile having a given shape and center of gravity location are described, and the coefficients of a number of projectiles and projectile shapes are given. The use of aerodynamic coefficients in predicting stability, range and accuracy is described. The effects of variations in projectile shape and center of gravity location on range, accuracy and lethality are discussed. Some material on prototype testing and the effects of round-to-round variations in production lots is presented.
