Clarke 1933 p. 434 In oceans and lakes, zooplankton often make diel vertical migrations (DVM), descending at dawn and coming up again in late afternoon and evening. The small animals cover distances of 10–40 m in lakes or even a few hundred metres in the open oceans. Although not as spectacular as migrations of birds or the massive movements of large mammals over the African savannas, the numbers involved are very large and the biomass exceed the bulk of the African herds. For example, in the Antarctic oceans swarms of “Krill” may cover kilometres across, with thousands of individuals per cubic metre. These Euphausiids are food for whales, the most bulky animals on earth. Zooplankton are key species in the pelagic food web, intermediary between algae and ?sh, and thus essential for the functioning of the pelagic community. Prey for many, they have evolved diverse strategies of survival and DVM is the most imp- tant one. Most ?sh are visually hunting predators and need a high light intensity to detect the often transparent animals. By moving down, the well-lit surface layers are avoided but they have to come up again at night to feed on algae.

Multi-scale, spatial and temporal relationships between zooplankton variability and environmental heterogeneity are still not satisfactorily understood due to the complexity of the different aquatic ecosystems (considering both biotic and abiotic elements). Thus, the ambition of the present edition is to contribute to the understanding of the role of zooplankton by investigating ecological aspects such as the species diversity, their spatial distribution and seasonal dynamics in relation to the environmental influence in various aquatic ecosystems around the world. Topics discussed in this book include the understanding of the role of zooplankton in the transfer of pollutants through trophic food webs; plankton models to explain red tides; spatial patterns of trophy and zooplankton communities in a tropical urban reservoir; the zooplankton variation in five Greek lakes; the zooplankton community in a nuclear power station cooling reservoir; the spatio-temporal dynamics of cladocera and copepoda in the Danube River; the gelatinous zooplankton in the Namibian upwelling region; and the zooplankton community in relation to the environmental factors in a solar saltern.

The motivation for this research was to gain insights into how food webs respond to ecosystem-scale changes, using Lake Champlain as a case study. I sought to link field-based observations with experimentally derived data on mechanisms to better understand the processes that drive cyanobacteria blooms. My research addressed three specific topics: (1) associations among phytoplankton and nutrient concentration trends over time, (2) the impacts of planktivory by invasive fish on the ambient zooplankton conununity, and (3) the role of herbivore zooplankton grazers in determiIiing the composition of the phytoplankton community.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the premise that the study of ecological communities should be a composite analysis of system properties (community structure, community energetics) and population properties (life history patterns, adaptive strategies) backed by a thorough understanding of the physical chemical environment. Too frequently community ecology takes a much narrower focus. This may partly be the result of perceived antagonisms between schools of thought in ecology. Despite their rather separate origins, the multiple theoretical and methodological tools that now exist must be applied synthetically to real communities if the progress of the past two decades is to continue into the next two. This book has a case history format, which increases the opportunity for detailed analysis, although I have attempted to maintain the general per spective of a community ecologist and to draw extensively from the literature whenever it seems profitable to do so. The case history data are for Lake Lanao, a large tropical lake. The main zooplankton data base used in the analysis is entirely original and unpublished, although the detailed support ing data on the physical-chemical environment and the phytoplankton com munity have been presented in numerous journal articles and are thus abstracted or used selectively to meet the needs of zooplankton community analysis.

Interest in the ecology of mysids, particularly Mysis relieta. was growing rapidly, so a meeting of active workers was held at the ASLO conference. Although the small group of researchers attending that first meeting were primarily North American and interested in Mysis relieta. the group quickly expanded to include researchers from every continent with interests in all aspects of mysid biology (see Appendix). The group, informally called the Mysid Research Group, formed to serve two basic functions·. The first was to facilitate communication among mysid researchers by publishing a member ship list and periodic newsletters. The second was to organize an international symposium on mysid ecology. After several false starts, a symposium was successfully held in conjunction with the 1981 ASLO meetings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The symposium lasted over parts of two days with an evening workshop the second day. Altogether, 1 poster and 21 oral presentations were given by 42 researchers. This volume is an outgrowth of that symposium and includes 15 of the papers originally presented at the conference. In order to make the volume as comprehensive as possible, contributions from individuals who could not attend the symposium were solicited. Thus, a total of 22 original contributions make up the present work.

Book excerpt: Our knowledge of the limnology of the waters situated, roughly, between the tropics of cancer and of capricorn, has depended for a long time on the expedition-approach, and therefore developed in a rather irregular, haphazard way, with the personal incentive of a small number of individuals as the main driving force. Things slowly started to change in the 1950s, and at an accelerating rate in the 1960s and 1970s. The IBP, and later the SCOPE and MAB programs, whatever their shortcomings are or may have been, promoted in-depth research of a small number of tropical lakes. For one thing, they showed the need for the creation of in situ limnological research institutes. When, in the 1970s, limnological research facilities or their nuclei began to appear in the tropical zones of all continents, an interesting phenomenon occurred: while most of the young native limnologists had received their training in advanced centres or courses held in the temperate (and developed) climatic zones, quite a few of their former supervisors or their associates became interested in warm lakes and rivers as well, using the new or newly expanded local institutes. We are, today, still in this phase and it is, apparently, expanding even further. Although not all experiments of this kind lead to happy marriages, a few were quite successful, and several papers contained in the present volume are hoped to reflect this.
