Book The Japan US Trade Friction Dilemma

Download or read book The Japan US Trade Friction Dilemma written by Karen M Holgerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this study of Japan-U.S. trade friction and the role perceptual differences have played in its evolution differs from its predecessors in key ways. First, it is interdisciplinary, drawing on the research of anthropologists, area specialists, intercultural communication specialists, linguists, sociologists, and social psychologists as well as that of political scientists and economists. Second, it both identifies and quantifies perceptual differences between Japanese and American opinion leaders regarding the large bilateral trade imbalances, the bilateral relationship, and national negotiating styles. Third, original data were collected from completed questionnaires sent to 230 American and 230 Japanese opinion leaders from business, government, academia, and the media, who had been involved in some way with the rice, automotive, or semiconductor sectors. Fourth, the three case studies of trade friction are representative of three differing mixes of trade friction are representative of three differing mixes of trade friction causal factors and perceptual dynamics. Finally, based on the findings of this study, modest suggestions are offered on how the bilateral perceptual gap might be narrowed and trade friction diminished so that the structural and sectoral problems might more effectively be addressed. This book should be of interest to scholars, government officials, and business leaders in Japan, the United States, and other countries in the global community who are interested in bilateral relations, international economic and political affairs, and trade friction. It should also be of special interest to social psychologists and cross-cultural scholars and researchers.

Book Getting the Triangle Straight

Download or read book Getting the Triangle Straight written by Gerald Curtis and published by . This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the balance of power in Asia shifts, relations among China, Japan, and the United States are becoming increasingly important for the future of the region as well as for the rest of the world. Trilateral relationships tend to be unstable, but the dynamics of China-Japan-U.S. relations are further complicated by historical enmities, differing systems of governance, competition in the economic and security realms, and growing interdependence. While most studies of these countries focus on their bilateral ties, "Getting the Triangle Straight" turns its attention to the ways in which they relate to one another in a trilateral context. In this volume, three leading experts from China, Japan, and the United States are joined by nine younger, emerging scholars to analyze the relationship and offer recommendations for better managing the volatile dynamics of trilateral relations. Contributors include Rumi Aoyama (Waseda University), Gerald Curtis (Columbia University), Fan Shiming (Peking University), M. Taylor Fravel (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Gui Yongtao (Peking University), Ryosei Kokubun (Keio University), Yasuhiro Matsuda (National Institute of Defense Studies), Andrew Oros (Washington College), Sadia Pekkanen (University of Washington), Katsuhiro Sasuga (Tokai University), Wang Jisi (Peking University), and Zhang Haibin (Peking University).

Book The Changing Asian Economic Environment and U S Japan Trade Relations

Download or read book The Changing Asian Economic Environment and U S Japan Trade Relations written by Kʻung-chia Yeh and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, a group of developing economies in the Asian-Pacific (AP) region has emerged as the most dynamic, rapidly growing economies in the world. This report examines some macroeconomic trends in nine AP economies: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and China. It explores their importance to U.S. and Japanese trade, how fast and in what direction their economies and external trade are likely to develop, and the implications of these trends for U.S.-Japan trade relations. Among its principal findings, the study shows that (1) the nine economies were insignificant traders in 1970 but have now become major trading partners of the United States and Japan; (2) a fundamental cause of tension in U.S.-Japan trade relations is the overall U.S. trade deficit rather than the bilateral deficit with Japan; (3) projections to the year 2000 suggest that the United States and Japan will remain the two largest economies, but the AP countries are moving up fast; (4) ratios of imports and exports to gross national product for the AP countries rose sharply between 1970 and 1988; and (5) because Japan and the AP countries will be the fastest-growing nations in the next decade, they will be able to absorb a larger share of U.S. exports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S.—Japanese Economic Relations: Cooperation, Competition, and Confrontation provides a comprehensive review of the patterns of U.S.-Japanese interaction. This book describes the tension in the economic sphere that frayed the whole system of connections between U.S. and Japan, including various factors that contribute to these tensions. The ways on how to to reverse the process of estrangement that can lead both nations out of the atmosphere of confrontation and back into one of healthy competition and cooperation is also elaborated. This text also discusses Japan and the United States’ possible developments of policies in pursuit of a rapprochement. This publication is a good reference for students and individuals researching on the sources of confrontation, competition, and cooperation in U.S.-Japanese relations.
