Download or read book Dynamics of Estuarine Muds written by Richard Whitehouse and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2000-11-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to predict the movement of cohesive sediment within coastal, estuarine or inland waters has a significant economic and ecological importance in the development of new engineering works and the maintenance of existing installations. Dynamics of estuarine muds clearly describes the most up-to-date developments in this field and contains information about improved procedures and how they can be applied to a variety of engineering projects. Drawing on a wide range of new data and new concepts in mud research, this concise volume presents the main processes of cohesive sediment behaviour, namely, erosion, transport, deposition and consolidation. It includes subsections on Knowledge, intended to show the practising engineer which parameters are important in each of the processes and Procedure, which will enable broad estimates of erosion, transport, deposition and consolidation to be made based on knowledge of the site conditions. Dynamics of estuarine muds is essential reading for the practising engineer who is involved in coastal, estuarine or inland water construction. A companion volume to Dynamics of marine sands, this excellent book provides invaluable information about this complex topic in a readily accessible manner.

Download or read book Fine Sediment Dynamics in the Marine Environment written by Johan C. Winterwerp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-05 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cohesive sediment, or mud, is encountered in most water bodies throughout the world. Often mud is a valuable resource, synonymous with fertile land, enriching the natural environment and used as an important building material. Yet mud also hinders navigation and consequently, dredging operations have been carried out since ancient times to safeguard navigation. Unfortunately, many mud deposits are now contaminated, endangering the eco-system and increasing the costs of dredging operations. The transport and fate of mud in the environment are still poorly understood and the need for basic research remains. This text contains the proceedings of the INTERCOH-2000 conference on progress in cohesive sediment research. It was the sixth in a series of conferences initially started by Professor Ashish Mehta in 1984 as a "Workshop on Cohesive Sediment Dynamics with Special Reference to the Processes in Estuaries". During these conferences the character of the first workshop has always been maintained, that is, small scale and dedicated to the physical and engineering aspects of cohesive sediments, without parallel sessions, but with ample time for discussions during and after the presentations, and followed by a book of proceedings containing thoroughly reviewed papers. INTERCOH-2000 was integrated with the final workshop of the COSINUS project. This project was carried out as a part of the European MAST-3 programme, and almost all European cohesive sediment workers were involved. INTERCOH-2000 focused on the behaviour and modelling of concentrated benthic suspensions, i.e. high-concentrated near-bed suspensions of cohesive sediment. Special attention was paid to: sediment - turbulence interaction; flocculation and settling velocity; high-concentrated mud suspensions; processes in the bed - consolidation; processes on the bed - erosion; field observations on mud dynamics; instrumentation; and numerical modelling.

Download or read book Dynamics of Marine Sands written by Richard Soulsby and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1997 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical engineer looking for an urgent solution to a sediment-related project often finds that the results of the relevant academic research are published in unfamiliar language in publications that are not easily available. Dynamics of marine sands bridges the gap between academic research and practical applications by summarising the research results in a unified form, backed up with worked examples and case studies. This comprehensive new book presents methods for calculating the various hydrodynamic and sediment dynamic quantities necessary for marine sediment transport applications, and recommends the most appropriate methods to use for engineering projects.

Download or read book River Sedimentation written by Silke Wieprecht and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment dynamics in fluvial systems is of great ecological, economic and human-health-related significance worldwide. Appropriate management strategies are therefore needed to limit maintenance costs as well as minimize potential hazards to the aquatic and adjacent environments. Human intervention, ranging from nutrient/pollutant release to physical modifications, has a large impact on sediment quantity and quality and thus on river morphology as well as on ecological functioning. Truly understanding sediment dynamics requires as a consequence a multidisciplinary approach.River Sedimentation contains the peer-reviewed scientific contributions presented at the 13th International Symposium on River Sedimentation (ISRS 2016, Stuttgart, Germany, 19-22 September 2016), and includes recent accomplishments in theoretical developments, numerical modelling, experimental laboratory work, field investigations and monitoring as well as management methodologies.
Download or read book Introduction To Hydraulics Of Fine Sediment Transport An Second Edition written by Ashish J Mehta and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book expounds the hydraulics of fine sediment which is almost ubiquitously found in coastal and estuarine waters, and in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Although the basic subject may be categorized as applied marine physics in shallow waters, several physicochemical and biological effects on particulate transport have been addressed. In this second edition most of the chapters have been substantially updated, rewritten, and expanded. Overall, a significant change has also been made throughout by replacing sediment concentration, a unit dependent quantity at the heart of numerous descriptions, measurements, and calculations, with the nondimensional sediment volume fraction. It marks a divergence in the manner in which fine sediment transport data and calculations are conventionally presented. The book is mainly written for civil engineering seniors and graduate students, to offer a comprehensive foundation in hydraulics of fine sediment. The book is also a useful reference for researchers interested in the effects of physical chemistry and biology on fine sediment transport in water and to an extent on coastal and estuarine morphodynamics, sediment transport, port and harbor engineering, and applied shallow watwer marine physics. The book is also recommended reading for those interested in understanding particle transport in water.Related Link(s)

Download or read book Coastline Changes written by Jan Harff and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume contributes to the current discussion of the role of natural and anthropogenic driving forces for coastal processes and their socioeconomic consequences. Special attention is paid to computerized tools that allow us--based on reconstruction of paleodevelopments--to predict the interference of processes on different time scales. On the one hand, the book provides an overview of the current model developments in describing vertical crustal movement, climate change forcing sea-level variations, the genesis of the basin fill along continental margins, and the interference of these processes in coastal development. On the other hand, it describes coastal development in key areas for different climate zones and geological settings. Coastline Changes is addressed to students and professionals in the geosciences, archaeology, social sciences, economy, and computer sciences. It will foster interdisciplinary discussion for the purpose of developing integrated concepts for sustainable development of the coastal zones."--Publisher's website.
