Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time to time the International Journal of Fracture has presented matters thought to be of special interest to its readers. In previous special issues (December 1980 and April 1981), Dr H.W. Liu as Guest Editor presented a series of review papers dealing with fatigue processes and characteristics in metals and non-metals. Continuing this policy, which is consistent with our stated objectives, a second review dealing with time depen dence in the fracture process, including the effect of material inertia but essentially excluding very strong shock effects in solids, has been assembled under the generic term "dynamic fracture". We hope that the ensuing state-of-the-art review will yield an instructive and timely product which readers will find useful. To assist us in presenting this subject, we have prevailed upon a well-known worker in dynamic fracture, Dr W.G. Knauss, Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics, California Institute of Technology to act as Guest Editor for this special double issue. On behalf of the editors and publisher, I wish to express our indebtedness to Professor Knauss and his invited authors for undertaking this special effort.

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurement

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurement written by J. Congleton and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KId values for PMMA, glass and 'Pitho' tool steel have been measured by a technique based on crack velocity measure-ments. Fracture induced by combined tensile and impact loading can cause a crack to decelerate, pass through a minimum velocity them accelerate again. Crack tip stress in- tensity at the minimum crack velocity is the dynamic fracture toughness for that velocity. Values obtained for PMMA and glass show that KId for slow moving cracks are sig-nificantly smaller than both the corresponding KIc and KId values for fast moving cracks. Reasons for the variation of fracture toughness with crack velocity are discussed. (Author, modified-PL).

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements on Small Charpy Specimens 97 A Preliminary Study

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements on Small Charpy Specimens 97 A Preliminary Study written by WN. Sharpe and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique for measuring dynamic fracture toughness on small specimens is described and preliminary data are presented. Dynamic crack tip opening displacements (CTODs) are measured with laser interferometry over times as short as 10 ?s. The measured displacement is converted to stress intensity values via the equations of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the peak value obtained is taken as the dynamic fracture toughness.

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Evaluation by Measurement of CTOD Crack Tip Opening Displacement

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Evaluation by Measurement of CTOD Crack Tip Opening Displacement written by William N Sharpe (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification of the dynamic fracture toughness of structural materials is essential to a wide range of problems - from nuclear accidents to ordnance applications. However, the difficulties associated with accurate measurements of cracks under dynamic loading are considerable. Thus there are no standardized procedures and few reliable results. This work describes a systematic study of the dynamic fracture toughness of SAE-01 tool steel, 4340 and HY100 steels and a tungsten, using the ISDG (Interferometric Strain/Displacement Gage) system which has very high frequency resolution. The major advantage of the method is that information is obtained very close to the crack tip, so that stress wave loading effects are accounted for. A detailed error analysis gives an uncertainty of -10% to +20% in the determination of fracture toughness, which compares with + or - 20% for published work.

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements in the Ductile to Brittle Region Using Small Specimens

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements in the Ductile to Brittle Region Using Small Specimens written by RE. Link and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic fracture toughness of a reactor pressure vessel steel was investigated using small specimens. Precracked Charpy-size SE(B) specimens and circumferentially cracked round bars (CRB) loaded in tension were used to investigate the dynamic fracture toughness of an A533, Gr. B steel plate within the ductile-brittle transition region. The specimens used in this investigation were removed from the broken halves of conventional 4T C(T) specimens that had been utilized in a previous investigation of the dynamic fracture toughness of this material. Crack-tip loading rates in excess of 104 MPa-m1/2/s were achieved in the current tests. Multiple specimens were tested at each temperature in order to permit the determination of the reference temperature, T0. A fracture toughness scaling model for the circumferentially cracked round bar developed by Sciabetta was used to account for the loss of constraint in this specimen. A master curve approach was used to characterize the dynamic toughness in the ductile-brittle region. The shift in transition temperature was compared to a model for the strain rate dependence of T0 developed by Wallin. The shift in transition temperature of the CRB specimen was accurately predicted by the model. The CRB specimen and the dynamic SE(B) specimens gave good results considering the material inhomogeneity typical of the plate tested.

Book Measurement of Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Ductile Materials

Download or read book Measurement of Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Ductile Materials written by EM. Hackett and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the applicability of a J-based approach to fracture characterization of ductile alloys subjected to dynamic loading. Three-point-bend [SE(B)] fracture specimens of a high-strength steel were subjected to impact loading in a drop tower, and appropriate strains and displacements were measured to allow estimation of J. A finite element analysis of these experiments was conducted to evaluate the applicability of a J-based fracture characterization scheme and to provide guidance for the experimental measurements. The concept of a transition time was introduced to provide an estimate of the time during which the controlling crack-tip field [Hutchinson-Rice-Rosengren (HRR) field] stabilizes. The paper demonstrates that for fracture times greater than the transition time, J can be accurately evaluated by the quasi-static deep-crack formulation. For the case of the steel SE(B) specimen geometry used for this study, the transition time was approximately 300 s. The finite-element analysis indicated that the net moment carried by the remaining ligament of the specimen could be evaluated by measurements of the flexural and stresses at the quarter-span position on the SE(B) specimen. This was verified experimentally in drop tower experiments utilizing strain gages at the quarter-span position. These results were found to compare well with a load estimation scheme based on a full bridge of strain gages attached to the tension and compression surfaces of the SE(B) specimen. The load accuracy obtained using the full bridge was also found to be insensitive to crack extension and plasticity at the crack tip. Methods of determining the crack initiation point in these dynamic experiments were evaluated. It was found that the double capacitance crack-opening displacement (COD) gage used in the experiments provides an accurate estimate of the crack initiation point.

Book Evaluation of Current Procedures for Dynamic Fracture Toughness Testing

Download or read book Evaluation of Current Procedures for Dynamic Fracture Toughness Testing written by WL. Server and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrumented impact test requirements for impact velocity, inertial loading, time to fracture, and frequency response were developed as a part of a large testing program sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). These test procedures relied heavily on current ASTM standards plus the composite experience of investigators throughout the world. This paper provides experimental verification of the EPRI developed procedures and clarifies some of the empirical relationships used in the procedures. The material investigated was a 4340 steel (Rc52) which was relatively insensitive to loading rate. Load-time information obtained simultaneously from an instrumented tup and strain-gaged specimen was analyzed for tests performed at various impact velocities. The results indicate that the EPRI developed procedures are conservative and allow reliable fracture-toughness measurements to be made.
