Book Quality of Service in Multiservice IP Networks

Download or read book Quality of Service in Multiservice IP Networks written by Marco Ajmone Marsan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IP is clearly emerging as the networking paradigm for the integration of the tr- ?c ?ows generated by a variety of new applications (IP telephony, multimedia multicasting, e-business, ...), whose performance requirements may be extremely di?erent. This situation has generated a great interest in the development of te- niques for the provision of quality of service (QoS) guarantees in IP networks. Two proposals have already emerged from the IETF groups IntServ and Di?- Serv, but research and experiments are continuing, in order to identify the most e?ective architectures and protocols. The Italian Ministry for University and Scienti?c Research has been funding a research program on these topics, named “Techniques for quality of service guarantees in multiservice telecommunication networks” or MQOS for short, in the years 1999 and 2000. At the end of its activity, the MQOS program has organized in Rome (Italy) in January 2001 the International Workshop on QoS in Multiserevice IP N- works (QoS-IP 2001), for the presentation of high-quality recent research results on QoS in IP networks, and the dissemination of the most relevant research results obtained within the MQOS program.

Book Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks

Download or read book Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks written by Demetres D. Kouvatsos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Highways are widely considered as the next generation of high speed communication systems. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.

Book Network Control and Engineering for QoS Security and Mobility V

Download or read book Network Control and Engineering for QoS Security and Mobility V written by Dominique Gaiti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-01-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for sophisticated network applications, allied to the growth of the Internet traffic, has lead to great efforts in the search of improvements in data transmission technologies with the intention of satisfying the increasing demand for bandwidth. So far as optical networking is concerned, WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) appears as the main advance in the transmission area, because it allows transmission rates near to the theoretical limit of optical fibers, of the order of dozens of terabits a second [1]. An essential issue in optical network design is defining how the network will be controlled, that is, what type of signalling will be responsible for resource reservation, route determination and fault handling, among other functions that constitute the control plane. Label switching, which in IP networks is exemplified by MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) [2], was extended through GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching) [3] to operate with several different network technologies, where the label can be represented in other ways, for example, as time-slots in TDM networks, as physical switch ports and as wavelengths (lambdas) in WDM networks.
