Download or read book A Dynamic Analysis of the Flows of Canadian Science and Technology Graduates Into the Labour Market written by Marie Lavoie and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper looks into the dynamics of school-to-work transition and the early careers of science and technology graduates in Canada. The analysis is based on three rounds of Statistics Canada's National Graduate Survey. This survey represents a large, representative sample of graduates from Canadian universities and colleges. Over 30,000 Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate graduates completing their programmes in 1982, 1986 and 1990 were interviewed two and five years after graduation. As well as the industrial distribution, the paper looks at the characteristics of science and technology graduates. The paper is a first look at the NGS data from the perspective of science and technology graduates. Its principal purpose is to raise questions for future analysis of the NGS data and data from other Statistics Canada databases.

Book Migration and Emigration in Canada Until 2003

Download or read book Migration and Emigration in Canada Until 2003 written by Roy Della Savia and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research discusses the relationship between the migration of skilled professional and managerial workers from Canada to the United States, the so-called “brain drain”, and seeks to determine if and how the Canada–U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may have affected bilateral flows of permanent and non-permanent immigrants between the two countries. Classical economic theory suggests that trade and factor movements are substitutes, so that freer trade between Canada and the United States could be expected to reduce incentives for bilateral migration. On the other hand, the labor demands of multinational corporations in the emerging global marketplace require a greater degree of worker mobility than has heretofore existed. The research reviews available historic and longitudinal evidence related to political, social and economic effects of the FTA and the NAFTA.

Book Innovation and Structural Change in Post Socialist Countries A Quantitative Approach

Download or read book Innovation and Structural Change in Post Socialist Countries A Quantitative Approach written by David A. Dyker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a range of S&T and structural indicators to analyse the transfonnation process, in particular the transfonnation of science, technology and industry, in the fonner communist countries. The book originates from a sense of the tremendous need for quantitative indicators for assessing trends and perfonnance in the post-socialist economies. S&T systems in the region have passed through the first phase of rapid deterioration, or as it is called by some analysts 'implosion'. After ten years of transfonnation we are witnessing a process of increasing differentiation of these countries in tenns of general patterns of growth and structural change, as well as specific lines of restructuring in their S&T systems. The question of sources of growth - or indeed of stagnation - is an increasingly urgent one, from both the policy and academic perspectives. In that context there is a pressing need for in-depth assessment of restructuring patterns in science, technology and industry in the region, as a basis for understanding how restructuring in S&T is linked to industrial restructuring, and to general economic and social transfonnation. As the contributions to this volume show, there is now a critical mass of quantitative data across the post-socialist countries which deserves to be studied more thoroughly in a comparative manner. The changes of the last ten years have produced varying patterns of adjustment which are now clearly visible in S&T and structural indicators.

Book Steppin Out

Download or read book Steppin Out written by Ross Finnie and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a descriptive analysis of a sample of bachelor-level university graduates derived from a representative database of 1982 graduates of Canadian universities, colleges, and trade schools that was based on interviews in 1984 and 1987. The analysis cross-tabulates data on such topics as activity rates, distribution of graduates across a field of study, job satisfaction, distribution of graduates by industry and occupation, overall earnings levels by sex and field of study, and the job-education match and earnings. Emphasis throughout the analysis is on two sets of comparison: science versus non-science graduates, and men versus women within each field of study. The study also includes results of a regression analysis of the earnings of science and non-science graduates, with an emphasis on the gender earnings gap.

This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PhD graduates play an important role in building Canada’s highly skilled and innovative workforce. They have expertise and knowledge that can help tackle some of the pressing challenges of the 21st century, yet PhDs are increasingly confronted with significant roadblocks on their entry into the labour market. For some academic disciplines, a PhD has long been the natural entry point to a career in the professoriate. This path still exists, but is available to fewer and fewer individuals. At the same time, meaningful jobs outside of the academy do not appear to have kept up with the growing numbers of PhD graduates in Canada. Some new graduates face extended periods of temporary employment, underemployment, or unemployment, whether they are trying to enter academia, or the public or private sector. As a result, they are missing out on opportunities to reach their potential and make a significant contribution to Canadian society, and the Canadian economy misses out on opportunities to spur growth and innovation by capitalizing on their expertise. Degrees of Success highlights the lived experiences of students and recent graduates and their entries into the workforce. It details the challenges faced by PhDs as they begin their careers, key factors contributing to these challenges, and promising practices to address them.
