Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than two hundred vintage postcard images, Durham, North Carolina, captures much of what life was like in the rapidly growing city during the first half of the twentieth century. This rare collection of postcards represents many aspects of Durham, especially the bustling downtown district. In the early 1900s, Durham was a small but budding town with a population of less than seven thousand. However, a tremendous number of people began to pour into the city, and by 1930 the population had increased to more than fifty thousand. That explosion of growth was attributable in large measure to the rapid expansion of the tobacco and textile industries, as well as to the endowment of nearby Trinity College (1924) by tobacco magnate James B. Duke, which lead to the institution's renaming as the now-renowned Duke University. In only a few years, the town's skyline began to be transformed with the construction of modern office buildings and grand mansions.

Book excerpt: One of the leading historians of the state of California and a photographer-collector of historical photographs of Stockton and San Joaquin County have collaborated to create this pictorial review of days past. The combined talents of Dr. R. Coke Wood and Leonard Covello have resulted in this attractive book, with its careful balance of text and photographs. The photographers (over 400 in the book) are a part of Mr. Covello's enormous collection, accumulated over a period of thirty years. Although alone they could tell the tale well, their value is expanded by the addition of Dr. Wood's text. All the subjects that are important to the people of Stockton are covered in these pages. Headings include waterways, education, law enforcement, transportation, entertainment, churches, the fire department, communications, hospitals, government, agriculture, business and commerce, sports, and buildings. Each chapter is a mini-history of the city in itself, with photographs from as long ago as 120 years and as recently as 1977--Inside flap.

Book African Americans of Durham County

Download or read book African Americans of Durham County written by Andre D. Vann and published by Arcadia Publishing Library Editions. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durham County, North Carolina, once called the "Chicago of the South" and the "Capital of the Black Bourgeoisie," has long occupied an important place in the hearts and minds of those who called Durham County home. African Americans have played a vital role in the growth and development of the region over the years, from antebellum times to Reconstruction to the Civil Rights era and in the present. The African American citizens of this historic Tar Heel county share an impressive story marked by determination, economic achievement, and resilience, and they have made a difference in all walks of life--educational, religious, civic, and commercial. This pictorial history reflects upon the rich and vibrant role that African Americans played in the area following emancipation. In its earliest stages, residents in such neighborhoods as Hayti, Hickstown, Crest Street, Pearsontown, the West End, the East End, and Walltown each created sturdy surviving communities that have shaped Durham.
