Book Duplex Ceramic Structures Kinetics of Fabrication of Silicon Nitride by Reaction Sintering

Download or read book Duplex Ceramic Structures Kinetics of Fabrication of Silicon Nitride by Reaction Sintering written by Donald R. Messier and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reaction sintering process for the fabrication of silicon nitride, i.e., the reaction of silicon powder compacts with nitrogen, was investigated in the temperature range from 1150 to 1450C, and the resulting silicon nitride was characterized by various analytical techniques. Oxygen impurities in the nitrogen atmosphere at high levels caused the formation of SiO2 and at low levels caused weight losses due to the formation of SiO gas. Fine particle size and iron impurities enhanced the reaction rate. The kinetics of the reaction of pure (99.99%) silicon powder compacts along with nitrogen follows the Jander relationship. Book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride

Download or read book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride written by Toshiyuki Nishimura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, improvements in the heat resistance of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics using grain boundary control and in plasticity at high temperatures using grain size control in order to reduce the cost of shaping Si3N4 are described. The heat resistance of Si3N4 is improved by mixing a slight amount of sintering additive as an impurity into the original material powder. The author presents his findings on the high heat resistance of Si3N4. The author also develops a new fabrication method for Si3N4 nano-ceramics that produces high plastic formability. The method developed offers two improved points in grinding and sintering processes. The author found that the plastic formability of Si3N4 nanoceramics is dependent on load stress; the results of his research are detailed in this book.

Book An Annotated Bibliography on Silicon Nitride for Structural Applications

Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography on Silicon Nitride for Structural Applications written by Battelle Memorial Institute. Metals and Ceramics Information Center and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for engineering materials in high temperature applications has led to investigation of the use of ceramic materials in such applications. Silicon nitride has emerged as a ceramic material having outstanding corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, mechanical properties and chemical properties. Although the requirements for increasingly higher operating temperatures (2500 F) for gas turbines have created much of the interest in silicon nitride, there are other potential high temperature applications such as bearings and radomes for which silicon nitride is also under consideration. The purpose of this bibliography is to summarize the research and development accomplished to date on the fabrication and properties of silicon nitride, particularly as it applies to structural uses of the material. This bibliography is an attempt to present a comprehensive but not an exhaustive study of the literature in the field.

Book Ceramic Processing and Sintering

Download or read book Ceramic Processing and Sintering written by Mohamed N. Rahaman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 915 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the field's premiere source, this reference is extensively revised and expanded to collect hard-to-find applications, equations, derivations, and examples illustrating the latest developments in ceramic processing technology. This book is concerned primarily with the processing of polycrystalline ceramics and focuses on the widespread fabrication of ceramics by the firing of consolidated powders forms. A brief treatment of sol-gel processing is also included. Ceramic Processing and Sintering, Second Edition provides clear and intensive discussions on colloidal and sol-gel processing, sintering of ceramics, and kinetic processes in materials. From powder synthesis and consolidation to sintering and densification behavior, this latest edition emphasizes the impact of each processing procedure on ceramic properties. The second edition also contains new and extended discussions on colloid stability, polymer growth and gelation, additives in ceramic forming, diffusion and defect strucutre, normal and abnormal grain growth, microwave sintering, Rayleigh instability effects, and Ostwald ripening. Illustrating the interconnectedness between the various steps in the overall fabrication route, Ceramic Processing and Sintering, Second Edition approaches the fundamental issues of each process and show how they are applied to the practical fabrication of ceramics.

Book excerpt: The suggestion that a NATO Advanced Study Institute would be an excellent forum for reviews and informed discussion on the broad subject of Nitrogen Ceramics, arose out of discussions with colleagues in the Department of Ceramics at the University of Leeds early in 1975. There was no doubt that such a meeting would be both very valuable and timely. Scientific and technological interest in the nitride ceramics and in silicon nitride in part icular had been growing steadily during the 20-year period following 1955. The intensive five-year programme initiated by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U. S. Department of Defence, on the development of a design capability in brittle materials for high temperature applications, had been based principally on silicon nitride and silicon carbide ceramics, and was due to reach the end of its first stage in the autumn of 1976. It was clear that by then a considerable volume of information covering many aspects of silicon nitride would be available for presentation or review. Coincidentally, the same five-year period had seen the discovery, and increasingly detailed investigation, of ceramic materials based on the AI-Si-N-O and similar systems. Besides being of great interest for their crystal chemistry and structural relationships, some of these materials could be assumed potentially to be of equal importance to the silicon nitride ceramics. More recently progress had also been made in the sintering of covalent materials, as demonstrated for the case of silicon carbide.
