Download or read book The Abalone Ukulele written by Roger Crossland and published by New Acdemia+ORM. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this historical adventure, cultures from China, Korea, Japan, and the United States collide in 1913 over three tons of Japanese gold ingots. Three ordinary men—a disgraced Korean tribute courier, a bookish naval officer, and a polyglot third-class quartermaster—must foil Japanese subversion and, with sub rosa assistance from Asiatic Station, highjack that gold to finance a Korean insurrection. Three ordinary women complicate, and complement, their efforts: an enigmatic changsan courtesan, a feisty Down East consular clerk, and a clever Chinese farm-girl. It is a tale that wends through the outskirts of Peking to the Yukon River; from the San Francisco waterfront to a naval landing party isolated on a Woosung battlefield; from ships of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet moored on Battleship Row to a junk on the Yangtze; and from the Korean gold mines of Unsan to a coaling quay in Shanghai. Soon a foreign intelligence service, a revolutionary army, and two Chinese triads converge on a nation’s ransom in gold . . . Praise for The Abalone Ukulele “A masterclass in historical fiction. With painstaking research and a gift for story spinning, Crossland brings to brilliant life a sprawling epic of greed, gold, and redemption. Crossland’s gift for converting historic details into character and narrative makes The Abalone Ukulele an immersive read.” —Joseph A. Williams, author of Seventeen Fathoms Deep and The Sunken Treasure “Crossland’s tale of shenanigans, greed, nobility, [and] slivers of grace propels across a geography spanning Shanghai, the Klondike gold fields, and San Francisco’s wharves. His characters are elemental, with a commedia dell'arte quality . . . . Clues to a mystery are sprinkled skillfully throughout, keeping the reader turning the page.” —Loretta Goldberg, author of the award-winning novel, The Reversible Mask “Maritime historical fiction in the tradition of Patrick O'Brian.” —Steve Robinson, author of No Guts, No Glory

But the Malacans aliens are so... alien. Their culture, psychology, even physiology is so very, very different. What physical training standards do you use for a race that can do 200 push-ups with breaking a sweat, but can't do a single squat-thrust? Worse yet, the Malacans are a passive and docile species, with little or no sense of independence, ambition, or aggression. But the Corps don't want sheep - they want Marines! With only three fellow Drill Instructors, century-old surplus weapons and equipment, and just eighteen weeks for Boot Camp, can Sergeant Christopher teach the meek and submissive aliens what it means to be one of the few and the proud?

Book excerpt: The Vietnam era was a time of turmoil and change in the United States, one of anger and anguish for some; especially among young men facing a call up for military service. Writings about this time have focused mostly on the protest viewpoint. But not everyone who went to Vietnam did so against their will. Many were proud to fight for their country, especially the early war cadre of troops, mostly in the Marine Corps, who were all volunteers. It was what they had joined up and trained for, and they were determined to do their duty wherever it took them. The name of the place did not matter, what mattered was that the Corps told them to go. WE MARINES, is the authors experience in the military from age seventeen to twenty-three. A young man who wanted to be a Marine, and served in peace time, the Cuban Crisis, and Vietnam. He didn’t mind going into combat with his buddies, and when his overseas rotation was up volunteered a second time to stay with them. WE MARINES, deals with our involvement in Vietnam in 1965-66 offering a personal view of the war and its aftermath too often ignored, until now. It is written especially for his family and those who were there.

Download or read book A Sea Story written by Charles R. Johnstone and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About a year ago, I came to the conclusion that none of my children or grandchildren knew much about my life and what I had done with it, so I decided to write an autobiography of my life from 1938, when I was born, until 1975, when I retired from the navy. I didnt know anything about writing a book, and still dont, but I have always had the knack of making my brain remember things that happened long ago. I have probably violated every rule of good book writing known to man. But I will chock it up to inexperience; also I wanted to write it as though I was talking to you, face-to-face. I took the name of my book from the slang words used by sailors to describe the stories told among each other for some two hundred years. I tried very hard to not bring dishonor to the navy, my family, or myself.

Download or read book To Princess from Krug written by C. M. Krueger and published by Author House. This book was released on 2002-11-26 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dale was seventeen when the Second World War had finally ended. After the end of the war, he eagerly set his sights on higher learning and began to pursue his own lofty personal goals, in a peacetime America. In 1950, after the Korean War erupted into the lives of the, still battle-weary people of the United States, young men were targeted, once again, by the United States Military. Dale had just turned twenty-two years old. Much attention has been given, of late, to letters written by the men who served in the Armed Forces, of the United States, this past century. I believe that in my letters, written by a raw young sailor, Krug to Princess, one might be able to gain much insight, on what many of the young men, like Dale, went through in those uncertain times. Dale labored to write Connie a daily letter. Depending on circumstances, he sometimes could only write every two or three days, but most of the time he maintained his daily schedule, of notes and letters. Some of Krugs letters, from the war zone, were lost before they reached me, but because of the frequency of his writing, most came through to me. So, even though a few letters were lost, I still have a steady diary, of Krugs day-to-day activities in his first year of life in the Navy, at the beginning of the Korean War. Dale dedicated himself to motivate me to, want to, wait for him to come home to our marriage, by keeping my interest in him, alive. He worked hard, to make his beautiful love notes, both interesting and informative in reading content.
