Book excerpt: Far from being rhetorical ornaments, metaphors play a central role in public discourse, as they shape the structure of political categorisation and argumentation. Drawing on a very large bilingual corpus, this book, now in paperback, analyses the distribution of 'metaphor scenarios' in more than a decade of public discourse on European integration, elucidating differences in UK and German attitudes and argumentation. The corpus analysis leads to a refinement of cognitive metaphor theory by systematically relating conceptual, semantic and argumentation levels and incorporating the historical dimension of metaphor evolution. Finally, drawing on examples of metaphor negotiation and on a reassessment of Hobbes' concept of metaphor in Leviathan, the book highlights the ethical dimension of metaphor in politics.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Scholars dating back to Aristotle have argued that metaphors are persuasive in politics; yet, little empirical research exists to validate these assertions. In this dissertation, I explore how elites use metaphors to communicate information to citizens, and what impact these messages have on their understanding and evaluation of political issues. I investigate how metaphors work, which ones are being used in real policy debates, and how they influence people's perceptions of message quality and judgments about political issues. To this end, I conduct several experiments, as well as a content analysis, to test and explore metaphor-induced persuasion. Ultimately, this dissertation is about how individuals make sense of politics, and how elites can use what we know about human cognition to convey their policies to the mass public.First, I lay out a theory of policy metaphors and propose a number of hypotheses derived from the literature in psychology and political science (Chapter 2). Second, I discuss the results from a content analysis of actual policy speeches to identify how party leaders communicate with members of the American public (Chapter 3). Third, I present the results from three experimental studies designed to flesh out the persuasive effects of metaphors, as well as test potential mediators and moderators of metaphor-induced attitude change (Chapter 4). Fourth, I introduce a novel experiment to examine the automatic, spontaneous evaluative implications of policy metaphors (Chapter 5) and then explore whether policy metaphors create semantic associations in memory (Chapter 6). Finally, I discuss the results and propose ideas for future research on policy metaphors and persuasion (Chapter 7).

Using them, discourse participants try to gain competitive advantage over others by offering their audiences new meaning nuances, challenging each other and announcing political initiatives. It is here that metaphor as a means to change meanings – and thus, to change social and political reality – comes into its own. Political Metaphor Analysis provides an innovative approach to the study of figurative language use in political discourse by presenting empirical analyses based on a large corpus of political metaphors and metonymies, linking these analyses to theoretical positions and assessing their limitations and perspectives for further exploration. The 'classic' model of conceptual metaphor analysis, pioneered by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and expanded and amended over the past thirty-five years, is critically examined with regard to new findings about the variation, historicity, pragmatic exploitation, comprehension and interpretation of metaphors. As a central new analytical category, the notion of “metaphor scenario” is proposed and tested against various sub-sets of data. It allows to link hypothesised conceptual metaphors to narrative, argumentative and evaluative patterns in actual discourse and understanding processes, so that their cognitive significance can be more reliably gauged and theoretically modelled.

O'Neill, William Hawley Davis, and Judge Wells in regards to how collegiate debate should be conceived. This thesis utilizes a historical rhetorical method for a close reading of competing metaphors in American collegiate debate as established in a debate between O'Neill, Davis, and Wells in the seminal volumes of the Quarterly Journal of Public Speaking regarding the role of collegiate debate in the newly forming communication field. The analysis found three dominant metaphors used for debate: deliberation, game, education. The analysis concludes by discussing the modern use of those three metaphors in contemporary debate leagues, demonstrating how contemporary collegiate debate became viewed as predominantly a game, and only secondarily as an educational activity. This thesis concludes by suggesting that debate should be viewed as primarily communication education based on its historical applications and should be utilized in basic communication courses as a method for training students in civil discourse, public speaking, and in depth research.

Any attempt to analyze rationally the predominating barbaric phenomenon of the 20th century, namely the Holocaust and its Fascist background, challenges the limits of human understanding. The phenomenon of the Holocaust is a consequence of these "dark places" where again in Steiner's words "we have passed out of the major order and symmetries of Western civilization". A final understanding of the theme is beyond the limits of rationality and may also be viewed in the light of Adorno's "no poetry after Auschwitz". Nevertheless, the need to attempt reflective and creative 'work' on this topic continues. The aim of the book is to study the relationship between ideology and myth as they function diversely in Fascist and Antifascist drama. All the plays discussed are constructed as a paradigmatic constellation between myth and ideology, coordinated by a central and homogeneous political intent. The difference between them lies in their Fascist or Antifascist attitude. The plays analyzed were chosen for the treatment of a common thematic Ur-myth: the post-figuration of the return of the prodigal son and the story of the crucifixion from the New Testament. The 'prodigal cluster' includes plays by Franz Theodor Csokor, Ernst Wiechert and Max Frisch, the 'sacrificial cluster' plays by Otto Erler, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and George Tabori. As an introductory analysis, the theme of the artist and his mission is treated in two plays written in the pre-Nationalsocialist period: "Der Einsame. Ein Menschenuntergang" by Hanns Johst and Bertold Brecht's reaction to this play in "Baal". A final analysis deals with the fusion of mythologems and ideologems as demonstrated in two plays dealing with the New Myth of Germania by Richard Eutinger and Heiner Müller.
