It is the result of a survey on the initial training of teachers in sociocultural diversity in Europe, carried out in 16 countries within the framework of the project "Policies and practices for teaching sociocultural diversity" launched by the Steering Committee for Education of the Council of Europe in 2006. The aim of the book is to illustrate this diversity via a selection of case studies from Denmark, France, Germany, Poland and Sweden. Although social pedagogy is, in many countries, a profession that represents a sizeable workforce, very little has been written about it from a European perspective. Comparative literature tends to look at social work, whereby social pedagogy is obscured. But while there is a lack of comparative social pedagogy literature, interest in social pedagogy is growing. This is particularly so in the United Kingdom where no social pedagogy tradition exists but policy developments point to the emergence of a social pedagogy paradigm both in academia and in terms of careers. We propose education to be such a case. The global dialogue in education tends to be restricted to and mediated by standardized measurements. Such standards are meant to measure qualities of education and of student behavior and create the sought for condition for normative comparability and competition. The obvious drawback is that cultural variability – in local living as well as in education – is rendered irrelevant. Are there alternatives? The book insists on maintaining the discussion about education on a global level, but rather than moving towards homogenization and standardization of education, the attention is drawn towards the potential for learning from creative fits - and misfits - between concrete local cultures, institutional practices and global aims and standards of education. This work brings together a group of educational and developmental researchers and scholars grappling to find culturally informed and sensitive modes of educating people and communities. Case studies and examples from four geographical contexts are being discussed: China, Brazil, Australia and Europe. While being embedded in these local cultures, the authors share a conceptual grounding in cultural developmental theorizing and a vision for a culturally informed globalized perspective on education. Book excerpt: The 2005 rioting in France’s suburbs caught the world’s attention and exposed the limits of the Republic’s policies on the integration of ‘immigrant-origin’ populations. This book examines academic and public discourses about young people of North African origin in France. The resurgence of such discussions in France, focusing on sensational questions of urban unrest, Islamic fundamentalism and the challenges of increasingly assertive cultural identities, means that it is all the more necessary not to overlook the ‘ordinary’ majority of young French-North Africans. Their own preoccupations often go unnoticed in a context where issues such as violence in the banlieues and the threat of terrorism are pushed to the fore, sometimes with devastating consequences in terms of discrimination and exclusion. The book rebalances and nuances the debates about post-migrant North-African youth by drawing on extensive empirical research carried out in those suburbs of north-east Paris affected by the riots. It studies the construction of identity amongst this invisible majority and, by adopting an ethnographic approach, addresses the disjuncture between the sometimes inflammatory discourses about this population and their own experiences.
