Cette étude a été orientée suivant trois axes principaux. Le premier de ces axes est l'étude des problèmes posés par la primitive de migration d'Objet elle-même, que nous analysons comme étant principalement des problèmes de références mal typées. Nous nous sommes interroges sur la manière dont doivent être réglés ces problèmes et sur l'intégration de cette nouvelle primitive au sein de langages de mise à jour d'instance. A partir de cette étude, nous avons proposé un langage de mise à jour d'instance offrant une primitive de migration d'objet. Le second axe porte sur la manière dont la migration d'objet apporte une solution au problème de l'évolution de schéma. Nous montrons qu'il est nécessaire de réorganiser l'instance, et que dans ce contexte la migration d'objet est une primitive puissante. Le dernier axe porte sur une intégration du concept de migration d'objet au sein du schéma d'une base de données, définissant ainsi un schéma dynamique. Nous définissons un mécanisme de contraintes dynamiques permettant principalement de spécifier les séquences de migrations autorisées au sein de la base de données. Nous montrons également comment il interagit avec des langages de mise à jour d'instance en restreignant l'ensemble des programmes applicables sur la base. Une implémentation de deux langages de mise à jour d'instance comportant de la migration d'objet a été réalisée. Malgré l'apparent déclin actuel des SGBD à objets, nous croyons que les problèmes de dynamicité étudiés dans cette thèse vont au-delà d'un modèle, d'un langage, et même d'un paradigme de programmation particulier. En particulier, nous croyons qu'ils se poseront sans aucun doute, sous une forme ou une autre, dans XML et les modèles semi-structurés.

Adopting a contrary approach, this book represents a theoretical exploration to show that, in the domain of technological development, there are significant margins for manoeuvre in which to recuperate and valorise human and social action, in order to envisage a better democratisation of technology. Primary focus is placed on open source, as potentially paving the way to a new participatory model of technology. This model makes so-called ‘technical code’ an open entity in which it is possible to realise creative processes, including those of re-appropriation designed to re-invent used technologies.

Described as the biggest migration in human history, an estimated 250 million Chinese people have left their villages in recent decades to live and work in urban areas. Xinyuan Wang spent 15 months living among a community of these migrants in a small factory town in southeast China to track their use of social media. It was here she witnessed a second migration taking place: a movement from offline to online. As Wang argues, this is not simply a convenient analogy but represents the convergence of two phenomena as profound and consequential as each other, where the online world now provides a home for the migrant workers who feel otherwise ‘homeless’. Wang’s fascinating study explores the full range of preconceptions commonly held about Chinese people – their relationship with education, with family, with politics, with ‘home’ – and argues why, for this vast population, it is time to reassess what we think we know about contemporary China and the evolving role of social media.

Book excerpt: Media have played an important role in framing the public debate on the “refugee crisis” that peaked in autumn of 2015. This report examines the narratives developed by print media in eight European countries and how they contributed to the public perception of the “crisis”, shifting from careful tolerance over the summer, to an outpouring of solidarity and humanitarianism in September 2015, and to a securitisation of the debate and a narrative of fear in November 2015. Overall, there has been limited opportunity in mainstream media coverage for refugees and migrants to give their views on events, and little attention paid to the individuals’ plight or the global and historical context of their displacement. Refugees and migrants are often portrayed as an undistinguishable group of anonymous and unskilled outsiders who are either vulnerable or dangerous. The dissemination of biased or ill-founded information contributes to perpetuating stereotypes and creating an unfavourable environment not only for the reception of refugees but also for the longer-term perspectives of societal integration.

Sonny is so outraged and threatened by Felicia's interference with his plans for Vinny that he takes Felicia's life, and with the help of a crooked New York Detective, is able to cover up his horrible crime. With Felicia out of the way, Sonny drags Vinny into the life he and Felicia so vehemently wanted him to avoid. This story, through its many twists and turns, traces the life of Vinny as he is initiated into the family, becomes a" mobster," and eventually winds up in prison. While Vinny is in prison his grandmother Gina, Felicia's mother, is approached by an FBI Agent Rick Carr, who tells her that Felicia's death was not natural, as had been reported, and that he suspects Sonny was involved with her death. Once Gina relates this information to Vinny upon his release from prison, he makes the life altering decision to work with the FBI to try to bring down his Father's empire, in order to avenge his beloved mother's death. The story culminates in a heart stoppingconfrontation between Vinny and Sonny that will have the viewers on the edge of their seats.

In Unequal Treatment, a panel of experts documents this evidence and explores how persons of color experience the health care environment. The book examines how disparities in treatment may arise in health care systems and looks at aspects of the clinical encounter that may contribute to such disparities. Patients' and providers' attitudes, expectations, and behavior are analyzed. How to intervene? Unequal Treatment offers recommendations for improvements in medical care financing, allocation of care, availability of language translation, community-based care, and other arenas.
