SCATTERING REMINISCENCES. A COMBADE S LOVE. DEGREES g'AMES TABOR and Dennis Garrity O 1 were about the last two soldiers that DEGREES DEGREES DEGREESJ* would have been taken for chums. Garrity was a great thick-chested Irishman with brawny arms and a roistering sort of manner who had served through the Crimean war and knew more of tactics in the first year of the Civil war than half of our officers. Tabor was scarce more than a boy, a slender, palefaced youth, mild of manner and gentle of speech as a girl. Tabor's mother had given him a little pocket Bible when she kissed him good-bye, and, unmindful of the jeers of his comrades, he read it every evening and knelt and offered up a silent prayer before wrapping himself in his blanket. When the first death occurred in our camp we had no chaplain. Tabor was called upon to read the burial service and make a prayer. After that some of the boys tried to tease him by calling him "parson." AN OLD-FASHIONED GARDEN. Away up in York state there was an oldfashioned flower garden with roses, hollyhocks, sweet-williams, larkspurs, marigolds, lady-slippers, pansies, violets and other emblems of purity and the simple life. The boy had loved that old garden, so when it came summer he had a little reminder of it with a box of pansies by the side of his tent. One day a soldier who had been drinking just enough of the sutler's beer to make him think he was smart came along, and as he passed Tabor's tent he gave the box a kick, upsetting it. Garrity saw the act, and he took the smart chap by his coat collar and shook him as a terrier would a rat. A crowd gathered and then Garrity proceeded to read the riot act to those assembled. "Look a'here, my hearties," said he, "I'm going to give you young devils some advice, an'..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drum Taps in Dixie: Memories of a Drummer Boy, 1861-1865 A chance meeting with a comrade who was instrumental in saving from capture a piece of artillery at the second battle of Bull Run suggested one of the several sketches grouped together in this volume. Memory awakened furnished material for those that followed, each article recalling faces, forms, scenes and incidents from out of the misty past. "Awake but one, and lo! What myriads rise!" The writer has enjoyed his reminiscing. It has been a labor of love, so to speak, enabling him in a measure to live the old days over again. The articles have been written at odd times after business hours, and should not be scrutenized too closely from a literary standpoint. The writing of the memories of a drummer boy has been a source of pleasure and rest to the writer, who sincerely hopes that the reading of them may not weary those who, in their hours of rest, may scan these pages. The reception was in marked contrast with that in Philadelphia, but the passage through Baltimore was without incident. From Baltimore to Washington there was abundant evidence that the field of operations was not far distant. The railroad was heavily guarded, and camps of soldiers were frequently seen. The boy who two days before had left a quiet country town had to pinch himself occasionally to see if he were really awake and that it was not all a dream. Washington swarmed with soldiers. Troops were camped right in the heart of the city. Heavily laden wagons with the wheels in mud and ruts clear up to the hubs were pulled through Pennsylvania avenue by six and eight mule teams. The capitol and the Washington monument were then unfinished.[...]".

Book excerpt: A Leonaur 'two in one' original book on the American Civil War This unique Leonaur edition is sure to appeal to all enthusiasts of the history of the American Civil War. Both titles contained in this book share a common author and common themes. The young Delavan Miller, at scarcely thirteen years old, enlisted as a drummer boy in the New York Heavy Artillery of the Union Army. He has left posterity with a riveting and engagingly anecdote filled first hand account of his experiences at the sharp end of war-including details of camp and march as well as harrowing accounts of full battle including those of Cold Harbor and Petersburg. What makes this Leonaur edition special is that later in life Miller turned his attention to the writing of fiction, particularly short stories, which not only took the American Civil War as a theme, but also focussed on drums and the boys who played them-those stories are included here. This 'two in one' volume is an essential, welcome and charming addition to any library of the American Civil War. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: "Enormous numbers of boys and youths served in the American Civil War. The first book to arrive at a careful estimate, Of Age argues that underage enlistees comprised roughly ten percent of the Union army and likely a similar proportion of Confederate forces. Their importance extended beyond sheer numbers. Boys who enlisted without consent deprived parents of badly needed labor and income to which were legally entitled, setting off struggles between households and the military. As the contest over underage enlistees became a referendum on the growing centralization of military and political power, it was the United States, more than the Confederacy, that fought tooth and nail to retain this valuable cohort. How far could the federal government breach the sanctity of the household when the nation's very survival was at stake? Should military officers bow to the will of local and state judges? And what form should the military take to ensure victory while remaining true to the nation's republican principles? As they detail how Americans grappled with these questions, Clarke and Plant introduce readers to common but largely unknown wartime scenarios-parents chasing after regiments to recover their sons, state judges defying the federal government by discharging boys, and recently enslaved African American youths swept up by Union recruiters. Examining the phenomenon from multiple perspectives-legal, military, medical, social, political, and cultural-Of Age demonstrates why underage enlistment is such an important lens for understanding the Civil War and its transformative effects"--

Download or read book On to Petersburg written by Gordon C. Rhea and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With On to Petersburg, Gordon C. Rhea completes his much-lauded history of the Overland Campaign, a series of Civil War battles fought between Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee in southeastern Virginia in the spring of 1864. Having previously covered the campaign in his magisterial volumes on The Battle of the Wilderness, The Battles for Spotsylvania Court House and the Road to Yellow Tavern, To the North Anna River, and Cold Harbor, Rhea ends this series with a comprehensive account of the last twelve days of the campaign, which concluded with the beginning of the siege of Petersburg. On to Petersburg follows the Union army’s movement to the James River, the military response from the Confederates, and the initial assault on Petersburg, which Rhea suggests marked the true end of the Overland Campaign. Beginning his account in the immediate aftermath of Grant’s three-day attack on Confederate troops at Cold Harbor, Rhea argues that the Union general’s primary goal was not—as often supposed—to take Richmond, but rather to destroy Lee’s army by closing off its retreat routes and disrupting its supply chains. While Grant struggled at times to communicate strategic objectives to his subordinates and to adapt his army to a faster-paced, more flexible style of warfare, Rhea suggests that the general successfully shifted the military landscape in the Union’s favor. On the rebel side, Lee and his staff predicted rightly that Grant would attempt to cross the James River and lay siege to the Army of Northern Virginia while simultaneously targeting Confederate supply lines. Rhea examines how Lee, facing a better-provisioned army whose troops outnumbered Lee’s two to one, consistently fought the Union army to an impasse, employing risky, innovative field tactics to counter Grant’s forces. Like the four volumes that preceded it, On to Petersburg represents decades of research and scholarship and will stand as the most authoritative history of the final battles in the campaign.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1863, Civil War soldiers took refuge from the dismal conditions of war and weather. They made their winter quarters in the Piedmont region of central Virginia, the Union's Army of the Potomac in Culpeper County, the Confederacy's Army of Northern Virginia in neighboring Orange County. For the next six months, the opposing soldiers eyed each other warily across the Rapidan River. In "Music Along the Rapidan," James A. Davis examines the role of music in defining the social communities that emerged during this winter encampment. Music was an essential part of each soldier's personal identity and Davis considers how music became a means of controlling the acoustic and social cacophony of war that surrounded them. Music also became a touchstone for colliding communities during the encampment--the communities of the enlisted men and officers or Northerners and Southerners on the one hand, and the shared communities occupied by both soldier and civilian on the other--enabling them to define their relationships and their environment, emotionally, socially, and audibly.
