Book Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders

Download or read book Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It offers a set of conclusions and recommendations about successful stigma change strategies and the research needed to inform and evaluate these efforts in the United States.

Book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents written by Mitchell J. Prinstein and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists, educators, and parents of teens have long recognized the potency of peer influences on children and youth, but until recently, questions of how and why adolescents emulate their peers were largely overlooked. This book presents a comprehensive framework for understanding the processes by which peers shape each other's attitudes and behavior, and explores implications for intervention and prevention. Leading authorities share compelling findings on such topics as how drug use, risky sexual behavior, and other deviant behaviors "catch on" among certain peer groups or cliques; the social, cognitive, developmental, and contextual factors that strengthen or weaken the power of peer influence; and the nature of positive peer influences and how to support them.

Book Peer Influence Family Bonding and Adolescent Drug Use

Download or read book Peer Influence Family Bonding and Adolescent Drug Use written by Tonya Camille Hucks and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent figures from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (1997) report that 54.3% of high school seniors reported using an illicit drug at least once in their lives. A larger percentage of adolescent males (22.1%) than females (20.5%) engage in illicit drugs (National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, 1998). Previous research has suggested that one of the strongest predictors of adolescent drug abuse is peer influence (Hawkins, Catalano, & Miller, 1992). Recently, Mears et al. (1998) suggested that delinquent peers have a greater effect on the drug use of males than females. In addition, research has implicated the role of the family in the drug behaviors of adolescents (Baumrind, 1985). Concerning gender differences within the family, Cernkovich & Giordano (1987) suggest that girls who have a close and positive family relationship have a lower incidence of delinquent behavior than boys who have the same relationship. Although this finding was based on delinquent behavior rather than drug use, it suggests that the relationship between the quality of family relationships and drug use may be stronger among females than males. The primary aims of this study were to 1) examine the relationships of peer influence and family bonding to drug use and 2) examine gender as a moderator of those relationships. Participants were 131 male and female teenagers who participated in a demonstration program for high-risk youth in Bloomington, Indiana. This project was a secondary analysis of the baseline data collected from a sample about to participate in a national study of high-risk youth. Participants were recruited from juvenile courts in the Bloomington, Indiana area. Most students were recruited because they were facing probation due to delinquent behavior. Results reveal there were no evidence of a relationship of family bonding to adolescent drug use and no differences between male and female participants in the relationships of either peer influence or family bonding to adolescent drug use. Furthermore, for both models, the factor of peer influence contributed more to adolescent drug use than family bonding. Findings supported previous literature about the relationship of peer influence to adolescent drug use. An important implication of the findings is the need to address peer influence when designing prevention programs for this age group.

Book Adolescent Substance Abuse

Download or read book Adolescent Substance Abuse written by John S Wodarski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a comprehensive review of adolescent substance abuse issues and an expansive, empirically based curriculum for school-based programs to teach adolescents about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The abuse of alcohol and other drugs among young people is a problem of alarming scope and gravity. Adolescent Substance Abuse explores the multiple forces which impact adolescents and can push them toward drug and alcohol abuse. Adolescent Substance Abuse proposes means by which to effect macro-level change in societal norms and values regarding substance abuse. The authors describes in detail an effective means of teaching adolescents about drugs and alcohol using an empirically based teaching method called Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT). TGT was developed through extensive research on games used as teaching devices. It uses small groups as classroom work units and capitalizes on peer influence by using peers as teachers and supporters. The book explains an effective curriculum which utilizes the TGT approach and provides a program for parents. The curriculum is unique in that it is anchored in empirical data and delivered via adolescent peer groups. Adolescent Substance Abuse addresses other issues pertinent to the reduction of adolescent substance abuse by exploring subsystems of change, including school and peer group environments, home and family, the media, community movements, and business and industry. The book is a great source of innovative ideas for beginning and expert counselors, social workers, mental health professionals, school psychologists, and others who want to prevent adolescent abuse of drugs and alcohol.
