Book Fundamentals of Radiation Materials Science

Download or read book Fundamentals of Radiation Materials Science written by Gary S. Was and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-16 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an eye-opening treatise on the fundamentals of the effects of radiation on metals and alloys. When energetic particles strike a solid, numerous processes occur that can change the physical and mechanical properties of the material. Metals and alloys represent an important class of materials that are subject to intense radiation fields. Radiation causes metals and alloys to swell, distort, blister, harden, soften and deform. This textbook and reference covers the basics of particle-atom interaction for a range of particle types, the amount and spatial extent of the resulting radiation damage, the physical effects of irradiation and the changes in mechanical behavior of irradiated metals and alloys.

Book Handbook of Structural Life Assessment

Download or read book Handbook of Structural Life Assessment written by Raouf A. Ibrahim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important, self-contained reference deals with structural life assessment (SLA) and structural health monitoring (SHM) in a combined form. SLA periodically evaluates the state and condition of a structural system and provides recommendations for possible maintenance actions or the end of structural service life. It is a diversified field and relies on the theories of fracture mechanics, fatigue damage process, and reliability theory. For common structures, their life assessment is not only governed by the theory of fracture mechanics and fatigue damage process, but by other factors such as corrosion, grounding, and sudden collision. On the other hand, SHM deals with the detection, prediction, and location of crack development online. Both SLA and SHM are combined in a unified and coherent treatment.

Book Drop Weight Testing of Nonstandard Geometries

Download or read book Drop Weight Testing of Nonstandard Geometries written by JG. Early and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The test requirements contained in the standard test method for drop-weight testing, the ASTM Method for Conducting Drop-Weight Test to Determine Nil-Ductility Transition Temperature of Ferritic Steels (E 208-81), generally limit its applicability to flat products or to products with at least one flat surface; this is done because of the shape of the standard test specimens and the need for the tension surface of the specimen to be an as-fabricated surface. Difficulties arise in the application of ASTM Method E 208-81 to steel products whose fabricated shapes are not flat, for example, piping and pressure vessels. For products with curved surfaces, some of the testing requirements must be violated; these include keeping the as-fabricated surface as the tension surface, uniform specimen thickness, a flat compression surface, and uniform stress on the tension surface. In this study, the nil-ductility transition (NDT) temperature was determined as a function of test specimen geometry for two carbon/manganese structural steel grades. The specimens were extracted from the head plates of railroad tank cars and were curved in two orthogonal directions. The sensitivity of the test results to variations in test specimen geometry has been determined as is reported here.

Download or read book Design Analysis written by Liu Cengdian and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 1841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure Vessel Technology, Volume 3 reviews the practices and trends in pressure vessel technology. This book discusses the tremendous progress in the various fields of pressure vessel technology, including fabrication techniques, ferrous materials, and life expectancy to assure structural integrity. Organized into 11 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the fabrication techniques in pressure vessel technology. This text then examines the requirements of the chemical industry for the prevention of catastrophic failure of pressure components. Other chapters consider the major development of pressure vessels for special purposes, high pressure vessels, materials for making pressure vessels, and pressure vessel codes. This book discusses as well the seismic design in the field of pressure vessels and pipings. The final chapter deals with buckling resistance under seismic motions for thin-walled cylindrical vessels, of which predominant mode of failure is shear buckling and bending under horizontal earthquake loadings. This book is a valuable resource for mechanical engineers, project managers, and scientists.

Book Fracture And Life

Download or read book Fracture And Life written by Brian Cotterell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an interdisciplinary review of the effect of fracture on life, following the development of the understanding of fracture written from a historical perspective. After a short introduction to fracture, the first section of the book covers the effects of fracture on the evolution of the Earth, plants and animals, and man. The second section of the book covers the largely empirical control of fracture from ancient times to the end of the nineteenth century. The final section reviews the development of fracture theory as a discipline and its application during the twentieth century through to the present time./a

  • Author : K. Ravi-Chandar
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2004-10-16
  • ISBN : 0080472559
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture written by K. Ravi-Chandar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Book Welding of Tubular Structures

Download or read book Welding of Tubular Structures written by Yong Zhou and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welding of Tubular Structures focuses on the testing, techniques, and other processes connected with welding tubular structures in different conditions and environments. The selection features the works of individuals who have devoted time in the study of welding, particularly on tubular structures and other materials. The discussions focus on the design of connections of welded structures, including the process of welding and inspection. Attention is given to weldments on offshore structures, and primary concerns include the testing of the materials used and how these materials fall short if subjected to stress and fatigue. Different welding techniques used on offshore structures are also discussed. Welding techniques on other materials are also noted. These discussions are supported by studies that are backed up by numerical representations, which is aimed at validating the strength of welded materials. Consideration is given when these welded materials suffer from crack or fatigue. Analysis of the factors why these welded materials fail to meet standards is done. A comparative study is also conducted on aluminum, steel, and other products when these are subjected to stress in different conditions and environments. The book is a primary source of data to those in the welding sector, particularly those working in offshore structures.
