Book Under the Influence

Download or read book Under the Influence written by Preston Peet and published by Red Wheel Weiser. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 986 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This myth-busting anthology cuts through the propaganda to tell the true story of drug use, abuse, and the costly war on friends, families and communities. Author and regular High Times contributor Preston Peet assembles an all-star cast of writers to shine a harsh light on the misinformation peddled by prohibitionists who profit from the War on Some Drugs and Users. Despite the anti-drug hysteria, drugs have been an integral aspect of human life for thousands of years. They cure diseases, ease pain, enhance intelligence, calm nerves, open the doors of perception and alter consciousness. Yet, even with the easing of marijuana restrictions, the War on Some Drugs and Users continues to persecute huge swaths of the population. The reasons why can be found in Under the Influence. The decades and trillions of dollars spent waging war on neighbors, friends and families have done nothing to eradicate drug use and abuse, but they have succeeded in overthrowing governments, tearing apart families and communities, and ensured the rise of international criminal cartels. Under the Influence explains how we came to this state of affairs and how we can bring about real reform. Contributors include Tom Robbins, Paul Krassner, Rick Doblin, Mike Gray, Lonny Shavelson, Daniel Forbes, Steve Wishnia, Cynthia Cotts, Russ Kick, Dr. Stanislav Grof, Daniel Pinchbeck, Paul Armentano, Jacob Sullum, Peter Dale Scott and Robert Anton Wilson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I did not come here to argue against your religious dogma, nor to answer to your so called gods. I have come to rescue Natalia from those who would do her harm. Whether they be the gods you love so much or those who foolishly claim to be her family.” Drogen, Son of Lisana As the gods began landing consecutive blows against Drogen’s parries, Balthazar came running from his hiding place, a massive war hammer held tightly in his hands. The war hammer was half as tall as he was, and upon it were engraved many thousands of runes, but one set stood out as being its namesake, “Unsterblich.” “He-he-he! Look, Uther, another toy for us to play with.” “I don’t like him, Ether. We ssshould dissspossse of him quickly and play with the other one. He’sss much more interesssting.” “Right you are, Uther. Much more interesssting. I want to sssee what elssse he can do.” “The other’s use of wind is nothing compared to ours.” Ether laughed Balthazar swung his hammer down toward Ether’s skull, but as it fell, a gust of wind met his blow with stronger magnitude, sending Balthazar’s war hammer flying back over his head. Although he was able to keep hold of its shaft, he was thrown off-balance, forcing him to step back a few feet to compensate. Uther was there to meet his retreat, and a gust of wind hit him like a brick wall as Ether righted himself and used the same force, suspending Balthazar in midair. Drogen ran to Balthazar’s aid but found himself being forced back by a massive gust that sent him reeling backward in position to see every last detail of what they were going to do to the one and only friend he had found comradery with during his time in Lundwurm Tul. The only father figure he’d ever known.

Download or read book The Age of Intoxication written by Benjamin Breen and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eating the flesh of an Egyptian mummy prevents the plague. Distilled poppies reduce melancholy. A Turkish drink called coffee increases alertness. Tobacco cures cancer. Such beliefs circulated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, an era when the term "drug" encompassed everything from herbs and spices—like nutmeg, cinnamon, and chamomile—to such deadly poisons as lead, mercury, and arsenic. In The Age of Intoxication, Benjamin Breen offers a window into a time when drugs were not yet separated into categories—illicit and licit, recreational and medicinal, modern and traditional—and there was no barrier between the drug dealer and the pharmacist. Focusing on the Portuguese colonies in Brazil and Angola and on the imperial capital of Lisbon, Breen examines the process by which novel drugs were located, commodified, and consumed. He then turns his attention to the British Empire, arguing that it owed much of its success in this period to its usurpation of the Portuguese drug networks. From the sickly sweet tobacco that helped finance the Atlantic slave trade to the cannabis that an East Indies merchant sold to the natural philosopher Robert Hooke in one of the earliest European coffeehouses, Breen shows how drugs have been entangled with science and empire from the very beginning. Featuring numerous illuminating anecdotes and a cast of characters that includes merchants, slaves, shamans, prophets, inquisitors, and alchemists, The Age of Intoxication rethinks a history of drugs and the early drug trade that has too often been framed as opposites—between medicinal and recreational, legal and illegal, good and evil. Breen argues that, in order to guide drug policy toward a fairer and more informed course, we first need to understand who and what set the global drug trade in motion.
