Book excerpt: Red Earth is an ecofeminist collection of poems that meditates on place and the making of home. Journeying through the landscape of dreams, memory, time and place, Red Earth locates the speaker in relation to the myriad of places, cultures, people and non-human kin she co-inhabits this world with. Grounded in her local bioregion, and traversing borders and boundaries, Red Earth is a collection of verse that invokes the spirit of place by reinstating a woman's voice amidst the boom of machinery and economy in the context of capitalism, urbanisation and the ensuing alienation from nature. Tracing its poetic lineage to ecofeminist forebearers like Mary Oliver, Eavan Boland, Grace Nichols, Joy Harjo and Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, Red Earth is an ecofeminist act of solidarity with marginalised others (non-human and human person-beings) and an artifact of social and environmental activism. Situated in Singapore and moving across geographies, Red Earth embodies a new planetary politics of relations that 'makes kin' with fellow person-beings to offer hope and healing in a time of state-sanctioned violence against the land and by proxy, its people, and increasing urban alienation.

Download or read book Dreams of Earth and Sky written by Freeman Dyson and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to The Scientist as Rebel (2006), Freeman Dyson—whom The Times of London calls “one of the world’s most original minds”—celebrates openness to unconventional ideas and “the spirit of joyful dreaming” in which he believes that science should be pursued. Throughout these essays, which range from the creation of the Royal Society in the seventeenth century to the scientific inquiries of the Romantic generation to recent books by Daniel Kahneman and Malcolm Gladwell, he seeks to “break down the barriers that separate science from other sources of human wisdom.” Dyson discusses twentieth-century giants of physics such as Richard Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Paul Dirac, and Steven Weinberg, many of whom he knew personally, as well as Winston Churchill’s pursuit of nuclear weapons for Britain and Wernher von Braun’s pursuit of rockets for space travel. And he takes a provocative, often politically incorrect approach to some of today’s most controversial scientific issues: global warming, the current calculations of which he thinks are probably wrong; the future of biotechnology, which he expects to dominate our lives in the next half-century as the tools to design new living creatures become available to everyone; and the flood of information in the digital age. Dyson offers fresh perspectives on the history, the philosophy, and the practice of scientific inquiry—and even on the blunders, the wild guesses and wrong theories that are also part of our struggle to understand the wonders of the natural world.

Book Mago s Dream

Download or read book Mago s Dream written by Ilchi Lee and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have forgotten how to breathe out. Caught in a materialistic matrix, humanity has become trapped in an unsustainable pattern of living, breathing in until we are ready to implode. The Earth is laboring under the burden. The time to exhale has arrived. You are an extraordinary person because you are living during an extraordinary time in history. Humanity has reached a critical juncture in its collective development, and many critical issues now demanding our immediate attention: global warming, population growth, culture clash, and more. In Mago's Dream, you will learn to connect to the essence of Mago, the nurturing spirit of the Earth. In the process, you will feel that her essence is your essence, and that through her you can connect to your own highest self. In the book, Ilchi Lee contends that the earth itself should become a central tenant of our human identity. By recognizing ourselves as 'Earth-humans' we can learn to transcend the cultural and national identities that keep us from living as a single, united humanity. And, by placing the Earth herself at the center of our common value system, we can learn to live in balance with the source of life itself.

Book Citing China

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gina Marchetti
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2018-03-31
  • ISBN : 0824866606
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Citing China written by Gina Marchetti and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citing China explores the role film plays in creating a common ground for the exchange of political and aesthetic ideas between China and the rest of the world. It does so by examining the depiction of China in contemporary film, looking at how global filmmakers “cite” China on screen. Author Gina Marchetti’s aim is not to point to how China continues to function as a metaphor or allusion that has little to do with the geopolitical actualities of contemporary China. Rather, she highlights China’s position within global film culture, examining how cinematic quotations link current films to past political movements and unresolved social issues in a continuing multidirectional conversation. Marchetti covers a wide range of cinematic encounters across the China-West divide. She looks closely at specific movements in world film history and at key films that have influenced the way “China” is depicted in global cinema today, from popular entertainment to international art cinema, the DV revolution, video activism, and the emergence of “festival films.” Marchetti first considers contemporary Chinese-language cinema (Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien); she then turns to Italian Neorealism and its importance to the Chinese Sixth Generation (Jia Zhangke) and the French New Wave’s ripple effect on filmmakers associated with the Hong Kong New Wave and Taiwan New Cinema (Ann Hui, Evans Chan). As the People’s Republic of China has gained increased global economic clout, filmmakers draw on Euro-American formulae (Bruce Lee, Clara Law) to attract new viewers and define cinematic pleasures for new audiences on the other side of the earth. The book concludes with a consideration of the role film festivals, women filmmakers, and emerging audiences play in the new world of global cinema. Citing China offers a framework for examining cinematic influence as a dynamic and multidirectional process. It is carefully researched, theoretically sophisticated, and animated by detailed and historically nuanced studies of individual films, making clear just how much a part of global film culture today’s China is. The book makes important contributions to debates in transnational film studies, postmodern versus modernist aesthetics and politics, and Asian as well as European art cinema.

PG - 13 : Parental Guidance Recommended This novel does contain descriptions of moderate action violence, suggestive adult content, controlled drug use, political themes, and some persons could interpret that it has religious connotations. Events and behaviours have been presented as realistic as possible; so as to be true to the human condition. Technical Notes The technologies described in this novel are based on the extrapolations (over the next 100 years) of existing 21st century engineering and science. The technical solutions proposed are derived specifically to resolve the engineering (as well as social and economic) problems resulting from the story’s premise and associated situational circumstances. Alas, the storyline does not utilize advanced technologies such as; faster than light travel (e.g. warp drives), wormholes, jump gates, teleportation, time travel, parallel dimensioning, and other such techno wizardry.

Book West of the American Dream

Download or read book West of the American Dream written by Paul Christensen and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "West of the American Dream is a multifaceted account of the search. Christensen shares his feelings of culture shock in east-central Texas as he meets the cowboy version of the blue-collar Texan and his Mexican American neighbours. He introduces readers to the convoluted history of poetry in Texas, a tradition, started by women, that shifted from a focus on the land to the quotidian habits of urban living. Using a unique dissection of the public ritual of a poetry reading, Christensen assesses the origins of modern poetry, the value of imagination in modernist and postmodernist verse, and what Texas poets achieved and how their work evolved after World War II."--Jacket.

Starting in the early 1930s, Jorneys story is about the harsh reality of living with an alcoholic, abusive father and his struggle to keep skin and bones together for the both of them. Sold off to a neighboring farmer for the sum of fifty dollars, Jorney vows not to take another beating. He finds he has to fight back to keep that very thing from happening. With Silas Baldwin down on the ground and maybe dead, Jorney flees to a life of running and hiding, always just one step ahead of the law. From working for the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) to running moonshine whisky, Jorney finds a way to get by and makes some lasting friendships along the way. When he finds the girl of his dreams, it seems everything is going to work out alright after all. But then Carl Betterman of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BOCI) manages to capture him with a truck load of moonshine whisky. When he finds himself on trial for murder, the darkest days of his young life are ahead of him. Jorney Wilson was truly born of the red earth, thus the title of this book. Follow him as he tries to make a life for himself and find justice and vindication for a crime he didnt commit. Share his adventures as he roams the countryside and helps make history in the young and growing state of Oklahoma. Sit with him in the dark cells of the Atoka County Jail as he awaits his trial for murder. Live with him as he fights to be free as a Son of the Red Earth.
