Download or read book Duelling Through the Ages written by Stephen Wynn and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting aside Roman gladiators and gun-slingers of the American Wild West, by the 19th century duelling had become the sole domain of nobility, military officers and gentleman, with rules added to make sure everything was conducted in a fair and professional manner. The word 'honour' became popular, because it was the reason why most men would challenge another to a duel. This book challenges that notion and asks whether it was really about honour at all, or was it more about arrogance or social standing? Over time kings, leaders and governments passed rules, decrees, edicts and laws banning the practice, but still it continued, even when the duellists knew that the punishment for taking part in such an event could be their own death. The last known duel with swords in France took place at a private residence just outside of Paris in 1967 between two politicians, Gaston Deferre and Rene Ribiere. It was ended after Ribiere, who was due to be married the following day, was twice cut on the arm by Gaston. The book also looks at some of the more humorous, unusual and least expected ways people found to conduct their duels, including throwing billiard balls at each other, duelling whilst sat on the backs of elephants, and two men who decided their differences should be settled half a mile up in the sky in hot air balloons. With more efforts to bring about an end to duelling, the upper classes of British society in particular still held on to the idea of being able to defend their honour, which saw many of them turn to pugilism as a way to sate their disputes, however ridiculous they might appear today.

Book Twenty Years at Play

Download or read book Twenty Years at Play written by New Play Centre and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vancouver's New Play Centre led the way in developing and producing the work of playwrights from Western Canada for the emergent Canadian theatre in the 1970s. The New Play Centre has been a major force in Canadian cultural life for two decades; it retains its dual role as playwrighting workshop and production company and remains an important facility for dramatists to reach national and international audiences. To mark the New Play Centre's twentieth year, Talonbooks presents a collection of eight of the finest plays produced by the company from 1975 to 1989: Herringboneby Tom Cone; Ned and Jackby Sheldon Rosen; Something Redby Tom Walmsley; Dreaming and Duellingby John Lazarus and Joa Lazarus; War Babiesby Margaret Hollingsworth; Under the Skinby Betty Lambert; The Idlerby Ian Weir; and The Wolf Withinby Alex Brown. All of these plays have been produced throughout Canada, and often abroad, and remain in active production today. Each script appears in its most current form, with the playwright's latest revisions, along with biographical and production data and photos.

Book Coleridge on Dreaming

Download or read book Coleridge on Dreaming written by Jennifer Ford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in-depth investigation of Coleridge's responses to his dreams and to contemporary debates on the nature of dreaming, a subject of perennial interest to poets, philosophers and scientists throughout the Romantic period. Coleridge wrote and read extensively on the subject, but his richly diverse and original ideas have hitherto received little attention, scattered as they are throughout his notebooks, letters and marginalia. Jennifer Ford's emphasis is on analysing the ways in which dreaming processes were construed, by Coleridge in his dream readings, and by his contemporaries in a range of poetic and medical works. This historical exploration of dreams and dreaming allows Ford to explore previously neglected contemporary debates on 'the medical imagination'. By avoiding purely biographical or psychoanalytic approaches, she reveals instead a rich historical context for the ways in which the most mysterious workings of the Romantic imagination were explored and understood.

Book A to Z of Dreams and Their Meanings

Download or read book A to Z of Dreams and Their Meanings written by Gordon Cotter and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-05-05 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis of myself. Gordon Cotter...Male DOB 11: 05: 1934 in Birmingham England. In September 1939, I, and thousands of children, was evacuated from inner cities, to rural Britain, this was to escape the onset of heavy bombing by German Luftwaffe planes. As war had been declared on Germany. I was sent to a small community in Northern Scotland. There was no communication in those days. Only things we heard was from the Radio. It was put on twice a day. The local community was made up of farmers, and some of the wives went to the local Landowner as maids and cleaning staff. I was 5 years old, and it took time for me to be accepted. I went to the local schoolhouse three times a week for lessons. The rest of the time I was expected to help around the farmyard. I began to notice that a lot of women often came to the house and was taken into the parlour, sometimes I would sneak into here and watch, and listen to the women talking. After a while I got braver and just sat in a corner whilst the women were there. It began to come to me that these women were telling my Grandma about their dreams. When they were finished they gave my granda some eggs, or butter. Now I understand it was payment. As time went on I began to understand more of what granda was saying to these women. I became interested in it. I still did not know what it was about. Years past, and when I was about eleven or twelve. The was came to an end. I had settled into life in Scotland and quite enjoyed the life. It was then that I was told about me being an Evacuee, and I could return to my original home if I wanted to. I did not remember any of it so I said that I wanted to stay. (Years Later I regretted this action) I had become very close to my grandmother during this time, and she and I often talked about the dreams and she said that I, did seem to have the gift????? I had by this time began to understand just what she meant by the various talks with these women. I was eventually allowed to sit in on the talks, and sometimes I was asked for my opinion. In later life, my granda became poorly, and she showed me a lot of her private books that she had written down her musings on all of the subjects within dreams. I was asked to take over from her for the readings. When she died, I was asked if I wanted anything of hers. I asked for the books that she had written down her thoughts on the subject. I moved back to Birmingham, and the books lay in my attic for years. In 1972 I came across them and again began to get an interest in the interpretation of dreams. I got out grandma's books and decided to bring them up to date. It has taken my since then to complete them.
