Book excerpt: Honeymooners Viktor and Liesel Landauer are filled with the optimism and cultural vibrancy of central Europe of the 1920s when they meet modernist architect Rainer von Abt. He builds for them a home to embody their exuberant faith in the future, and the Landauer House becomes an instant masterpiece. Viktor and Liesel, a rich Jewish mogul married to a thoughtful, modern gentile, pour all of their hopes for their marriage and budding family into their stunning new home, filling it with children, friends, and a generation of artists and thinkers eager to abandon old-world European style in favor of the new and the avant-garde. But as life intervenes, their new home also brings out their most passionate desires and darkest secrets. As Viktor searches for a warmer, less challenging comfort in the arms of another woman, and Liesel turns to her wild, mischievous friend Hana for excitement, the marriage begins to show signs of strain. The radiant honesty and idealism of 1930 quickly evaporate beneath the storm clouds of World War II. As Nazi troops enter the country, the family must leave their old life behind and attempt to escape to America before Viktor's Jewish roots draw Nazi attention, and before the family itself dissolves. As the Landauers struggle for survival abroad, their home slips from hand to hand, from Czech to Nazi to Soviet possession and finally back to the Czechoslovak state, with new inhabitants always falling under the fervent and unrelenting influence of the Glass Room. Its crystalline perfection exerts a gravitational pull on those who know it, inspiring them, freeing them, calling them back, until the Landauers themselves are finally drawn home to where their story began. Brimming with barely contained passion and cruelty, the precision of science, the wild variance of lust, the catharsis of confession, and the fear of failure - the Glass Room contains it all.
Download or read book Dream of the Red Chamber written by Riccardo Moratto and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume contains an excellent collection of contributions and presents various informative topics under the central theme: literary and translation approaches to China’s greatest classical novel Hongloumeng. Acclaimed as one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, Hongloumeng (known in English as The Dream of the Red Chamber or The Story of the Stone) epitomizes 18th century Chinese social and cultural life. Owing to its kaleidoscopic description of Chinese life and culture, the novel has also exerted a significant impact on world literature. Its various translations, either full-length or abridged, have been widely read by an international audience. The contributors to this volume provide a renewed perspective into Hongloumeng studies by bringing together scholarship in the fields of literary and translation studies. Specifically, the use of corpora in the framework of digital humanities in a number of chapters helps re-address many issues of the novel and its translations, from an innovative angle. The book is an insightful resource for both scholars of Chinese literature and for linguists with a focus on translation studies.

Download or read book Buddhist Thought and Applied Psychological Research written by D.K. Nauriyal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-21 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by leading scholars and including a foreword by the Dalai Lama, this book explores the interface between Buddhist studies and the uses of Buddhist principles and practices in psychotherapy and consciousness studies. The contributors present a compelling collection of articles that illustrate the potential of Buddhist informed social sciences in contemporary society, including new insights into the nature of human consciousness. The book examines the origins and expressions of Buddhist thought and how it is now being utilized by psychologists and social scientists, and also discusses the basic tenets of Buddhism and contemporary Buddhist-based empirical research in the psychological sciences. Further emphasis is placed on current trends in the areas of clinical and cognitive psychology, and on the Mahayana Buddhist understanding of consciousness with reference to certain developments in consciousness studies and physics. A welcome addition to the current literature, the works in this remarkable volume ably demonstrate how Buddhist principles can be used to develop a deeper understanding of the human condition and behaviours that lead to a balanced and fulfilling life.

Download or read book Somniloquarry Dreams Drawings written by Kevin Millsap and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As might be expected, the inspiration for this introduction came to me in a dream. Now, finally, I know the book is complete. It represents a long tenacious labor of many small quiet moments collected into a form that I hope you will enjoy. The text holds all the dreams (::) that I have written down. I began that recording process in the spring of 1981 at the age of 22. They span from my fourth year up to my forty-fifth, 1963 to 2004. These are actual nocturnal visions that were given to me in sleep. I have polished on them intensely all spring and feel that they have become a worthy set of image poems. The ink drawings (”) were done while awake. They are grouped to improve the flow of reading. Those sections do mark the moment in time of their actual public showings. Interspersing each of them into its chronological place would not do justice to the hundreds of other things that I have doodled and failed to capture. In total they present the story of a life. The narration and art are only (mostly) from the usually silent unconscious. Mundane events and needs have caused large gaps in the time-line. This work can be seen as a true novel or as an odd autobiography. Each entry is a crumb from my dreaming mind. I welcome you to the feast.

Download or read book Mirrors and Mirroring from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period written by Maria Gerolemou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines mirrors and mirroring through a series of multidisciplinary essays, especially focusing on the intersection between technological and cultural dynamics of mirrors. The international scholars brought together here explore critical questions around the mirror as artefact and the phenomenon of mirroring. Beside the common visual registration of an action or inaction, in a two dimensional and reversed form, various types of mirrors often possess special abilities which can produce a distorted picture of reality, serving in this way illusion and falsehood. Part I looks at a selection of theory from ancient writers, demonstrating the concern to explore these same questions in antiquity. Part II considers the role reflections can play in forming ideas of gender and identity. Beyond the everyday, we see in Part III how oracular mirrors and magical mirrors reveal the invisible divine – prosthetics that allow us to look where the eye cannot reach. Finally, Part IV considers mirrors' roles in displaying the visible and invisible in antiquity and since.
