Download or read book The Inhabitable Flesh of Architecture written by Marcos Cruz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s architecture has failed the body with its long heritage of purity of form and aesthetic of cleanliness. A resurgence of interest in flesh, especially in art, has led to a politics of abjection, completely changing traditional aesthetics, and is now giving light to an alternative discussion about the body in architecture. This book is dedicated to a future vision of the body in architecture, questioning the contemporary relationship between our Human Flesh and the changing Architectural Flesh. Through the analysis and design of a variety of buildings and projects, Flesh is proposed as a concept that extends the meaning of skin, one of architecture’s most fundamental metaphors. It seeks to challenge a common misunderstanding of skin as a flat and thin surface. In a time when a pervasive discourse about the impact of digital technologies risks turning the architectural skin ever more disembodied, this book argues for a thick embodied flesh by exploring architectural interfaces that are truly inhabitable. Different concepts of Flesh are investigated, not only concerning the architectural and aesthetic, but also the biological aspects. The latter is materialised in form of Synthetic Neoplasms, which are proposed as new semi-living entities, rather than more commonly derived from scaled-up analogies between biological systems and larger scale architectural constructs. These ’neoplasmatic’ creations are identified as partly designed object and partly living material, in which the line between the natural and the artificial is progressively blurred. Hybrid technologies and interdisciplinary work methodologies are thus required, and lead to a revision of our current architectural practice.

Download or read book The Modernist Garden in France written by Dorothée Imbert and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modernist garden, which flourished in France between the 1910s and the 1930s, vividly mirrored the geometries and cubist aesthetics familiar to the decorative and fine arts of the period. Created by architects and artists, these gardens were often conceived as tableaux in which plants played a role only as pigment or texture. This handsomely illustrated book by Dorothée Imbert presents for the first time - in word and image - a comprehensive study of these arresting architectonic gardens.

Download or read book Le Corbusier The Chapel at Ronchamp written by Danièle Pauly and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pilgrimage church Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp (1950–54), an icon of modern architecture, represents one of the central buildings of Le Corbusier’s late period. Located on a high plateau in the Vosges above Belfort, this building is an unsurpassed work of art which also fits uniquely into its physical surroundings. The shell-shaped roof, the rounded walls, the towers of stone masonry, and the facade with its rhythmic openings of colored glass are the essential elements of this sculptural construction. The scale and proportions of the chapel at Ronchamp are designed on the basis of the Modulor that Le Corbusier developed, which accounts for its distinctive spatial effect. Like all the guides in this series, this book is indispensable both for a specialist audience and for tourists interested in architecture and modern art.

Download or read book Le Corbusier in Detail written by Flora Samuel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-08-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to give such close attention to Le Corbusier's approach to the making of buildings. It illustrates the ways in which Le Corbusier's details were expressive of his overall philosophical intentions. It is not a construction book in the usual sense- rather it focusses on the meaning of detail, on the ways in which detail informs the overall architectural narrative of a building. Well illustrated and containing several specially prepared scaled drawings it acts as timely reminder to both students and architects of the possibilities inherent in the most small scale tectonic gestures.

Download or read book Architectural Drawings as Investigating Devices written by Marianna Charitonidou and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architectural Drawings as Investigating Devices explores how the changing modes of representation in architecture and urbanism relate to the transformation of how the addressees of architecture and urbanism are conceived. The book diagnoses the dominant epistemological debates in architecture and urbanism during the 20th and 21st centuries. It traces their transformations, paying special attention to Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s preference for perspective representation, to the diagrams of Team 10 architects, to the critiques of functionalism, and the upgrade of the artefactual value of architectural drawings in Aldo Rossi, John Hejduk, Peter Eisenman, and Oswald Mathias Ungers, and, finally, to the reinvention of architectural programme through the event in Bernard Tschumi and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). Particular emphasis is placed on the spirit of truth and clarity in modernist architecture, the relationship between the individual and the community in post-war era architecture, the decodification of design process as syntactic analogy and the paradigm of autonomy in the 1970s and 1980s architecture, the concern about the dynamic character of urban conditions and the potentialities hidden in architectural programme in the post-autonomy era. This book is based on extensive archival research in Canada, the USA and Europe, and will be of interest to architects, artists, researchers and students in architecture, architectural history, theory, cultural theory, philosophy and aesthetics.
