Could the world contain The books that should be written to record Thy Life by suffering perfected, and stored With such deep lore might be the heart and brain, Nor after years of weary toil attain The Wisdom that endurance can afford, Through hours of anguish unexpressed by word Those hours that make life long in the fierce strain Sustained by flesh and spirit. Book Sonnets Other Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sonnets Other Poems Classic Reprint written by William Lloyd Garrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sonnets Other Poems The compiler of this volume, a short time since, announced his intsu tion to publish a volume of Selections, in Poetry and Prose, from the Writings of william lloyd garrison. On examination, he found a much greater amount and variety of Poetry than be anticipated and being impressed with a conviction that Mr. Garrison's numerous friends and admirers would be glad to see it in a separate volume, for cheap cir culation, as well as embodied in a larger work, he has ventured to pub lish it in its present form. For the publication of these Poems, Mr. Garrison is not otherwise responsible than in having kindly given his consent to it, for the personal gratification of his friends. They are simply the unstudied effusions of hours given to relaxation from the arduous labors arising from his con nexion with the Anti Slavery Enterprise and were written without any thought of their being collected together in a volume. Having made no pretensions, therefore, to be considered a Poet, he may justly claim to be measured by his own standard, rather than by that of the critic. In the judgment of the compiler, however, the contents of this volume will not only bear the test of candid criticism, but secure for the author an honor able place among the Poets of our country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Sir Richard: Sonnets and Other Poems By brake and bower, by fen and field, And lakes that gemmed fair Nature's breast With shadowy lance and silver shield, Came riding Night upon his quest. The stars in countless myriads glowed, Like jewels, in his sombre helm, And earth grew silent as he rode Again through his reconquered realm. The Wind, his unseen trumpeter, Gave Challenge to the recreant Day. There was no answer, save the stir Of leaves, that turned to see the fray. NO answer and the wind was still, And all the leafage fell asleep, While Night rode slowly up the hill Into the ruined Norman Keep. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drama of Life: Sonnets and Music To dare to be frankly personal is one of the privileges of intimacy. Some of the most charming of private letters are those in which the writer takes it for granted that his own doings will be of real interest to his correspondent, and discourses upon them freely and without apology or any other form of jarring self-consciousness. He will even be forgiven for writing of his grievances if he but present them with suflicient spontaneity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tragedies to Which Are Added a Few Sonnets and Verses Mr. Stephens, are conscious of power which has not oh tained the fair opportunity of trial before living audiences, to console themselves by the expression of their belief that, with the exception of a few modern tragedies which cannot get represented, the hundred and eighty years since the adoption of the odious monopoly has not pro duced a single Play that will live at the present cen tury but it would ill become one whose dramatic efforts have obtained their full measure of attention, to sit thus in judgment on those of his contemporaries who have not only attained splendid theatrical success, but high and lasting renown. I may be allowed to add that, while I am not only content but happy to attribute much of the success of the two first Dramas to personal regards, I feel that it was an honest success; for, believing that the liberal issue of orders has conduced greatly to impair the love for the Drama, and to impoverish the managers of theatres, Ihave always declined to solicit or use them and have never obtained, or written, or given one on any representation of either of my Plays. Book Shakespeare s Sonnets Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shakespeare s Sonnets Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1865 edition was first printed in 1609 in London. Now, centuries after the Bard of Avon's death, his works remain popular, sought after, and worth republishing. This collection of sonnets is no different. This edition puts Shakespeare's fine 14-line poems in the spotlight, as it is devoid of any foreword, introduction, or any other type of writing but the sonnets. It includes all but one image - which is placed at the beginning of the book. In the absence of sonnet titles, the publishers did not make use of a table of contents. An index of first lines is provided instead, making it easier for the ardent Shakespeare fan to locate a particular sonnet out of the 154 included in the collection. It is delightful to discover that each page contains only a single sonnet, which facilitates clarity and ease of reading, aside from a satisfyingly "uncluttered" look. Reading the sonnets, one cannot but help sighing with delight at the beautiful rhymes and lines. The choice of words, combined with the fact that they do sound well with each other, makes lovers of the written word sigh with utter delight and joy. The romance oozing from virtually every line in Shakespeare's sonnets makes one keep reading one poem after the other compulsively. The clever themed grouping of the sonnets adds to the page-turning appeal of this edition. All in all, this is one volume to carry about, read, and re-read, especially when one needs a healthy dose of creative, or romantic, inspiration.
