Download or read book Like Love Poems written by Joanna Margaret Paul and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Following a three-part structure that had been established by Paul herself in early notes towards a selected poems, Bernadette Hall gives us 76 luminous poems, most of which have never been published before. The poems track through from the 1970s, a scouring time for Paul with the disintegration of her marriage to the artist Jeffrey Harris, and the death of their infant daughter Imogen, to the late 1990s, a time of celebration and fulfilment. Through her own words we are given a unique insight into Paul's passionate engagement with life and love, with family, friends and community."--Jacket.

Download or read book Washday at the Pa written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WASHDAY AT THE PA, by New Zealand premier photographers Ans Westra, was first published as a photo-story booklet in 1964 by the Department of Education for use in Primary Schools, but all 38,000 copies were withdrawn following a campaign by the Maori Women's Welfare League that it would have a 'detrimental effect' on Maori people - and that the living conditions portrayed within the book were atypical. A second edition of the booklet was published the same years with some images omitted. This edition is a selection of these two editions together with photographs of the washday family taken in 1988, and includes essays by arts critic, journalist and broadcaster Mark Amery detailing the controversy and background of WASHDAY AT THE PA.

Book excerpt: "The Yield is the vivid and lyrical new collection from award-winning poet Sue Wootton. These poems are sensorially alive, deeply attentive to language, the body, and the world around us. Down in the bone the word-strands glimmer and ascend often disordered, often in dreams, bone-knowledge beating a path through the body to the throat labouring to enter the alphabet." --Lingua Incognita Wootton addresses subjects as various as the fraught relationship between medical institutions and individual suffering, the disintegration of the polar icecaps, the energizing power of solitude and the rewarding demands of creativity and love. This is a collection about give and take, loss and gain; about sowing, tending and reaping. Sue Wootton brings her characteristic linguistic dexterity, exuberance and versatility to every page. The Yield is rich harvest.

Book excerpt: THE CRESCENT MOON : THE ASIAN FACE OF ISLAM IN NEW ZEALAND opens new doors into the lives of the largest group of Muslims in New Zealand and in the world as a whole: those of Asian descent. Photographer Ans Westra and writer Adrienne Jansen - armed with a camera and a tape recorder - take a trip through the country, catching up with people in their everyday lives. They meet a very diverse group, ethnically, culturally, and theologically. There are lawyers and farmers, computer trainers and butchers, fourth generation New Zealanders and new migrants. They talk with disarming honesty about the media, about 9/11, about identity, about their faith - but mostly they just talk about who they are and their life in New Zealand today.
Download or read book My Brothers Keeper written by Gloria Reuben and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death of a sibling is unlike any other. Gloria Reuben’s little brother died just before his twenty-second birthday. Two decades later, her oldest brother Denis died two weeks short of his sixtieth birthday. Just as Gloria felt like she was finally healing from David’s death, the shock of Denis’ unexpected death was almost too much to take. In My Brothers’ Keeper, Gloria bares her soul as she reveals the intimate details of her life at home as a young girl. How the death of her father when she was twelve shaped her view of love and life. How David’s death was the impetus for her move from Canada to the United States. And how her brother Denis was her heart’s twin in a multitude of ways. Gloria, most well known as an actress, debuts her talent as a writer in My Brothers’ Keeper, an intimate and honest tribute to David and Denis. Their lives. Their deaths. And the hope that awaits. “Gloria has written a truly wonderful and inspirational tribute to her brothers and to life. Helpful to all of us who have suffered losses.”—Pete Earley

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Brian Turner and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to represent the full extent of Brian Turner's achievement as a poet, from his Commonwealth Poetry Prize-winning debut, Ladders of Rain, to poems written in 2018.One of New Zealand's most acclaimed and widely read contemporary poets, Turner is a proud southerner, and the landscapes and skyscapes of the central South Island are amongst the strongest characteristics of his work. His themes range widely and make striking connections--poems about fathers and sons are also poems about the duties of care we owe to the natural world; love poems open out into metaphysical inquiry; satire keeps close company with political protest. Turner's work is distinguished always by his unmistakable wit and feeling, precision, and insight.
