Book excerpt: This true crime biography reveals the disturbing story of a serial killer who terrorized central Michigan—and now has a chance to go free. As a former youth pastor who attended the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice, Don Miller seemed like a decent young man. But in 1978, he was arrested for the attempted murder of two teenagers. Police soon connected Miller to the disappearances of four women. In exchange for a controversial plea bargain, he led police to the missing women’s bodies. Now, thanks to the deal he was offered and changes to Michigan law, Miller is allowed to seek parole once a year. In Killing Women, author Rodney Sadler examines the crimes, the “justice” meted out, and the possibility that Miller could be unleashed on the world once again.

Book Language Ideology and Identity in Serial Killer Narratives

Download or read book Language Ideology and Identity in Serial Killer Narratives written by Christiana Gregoriou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Gregoriou explores the portrayal of the serial killer identity and its related ideology across a range of contemporary crime narratives, including detective fiction, the true crime genre and media journalism. How exactly is the serial killer consciousness portrayed, how is the killing linguistically justified, and how distinguishing is the language revolving around criminal ideology and identity across these narrative genres? By employing linguistic and content-related methods of analysis, her study aims to work toward the development of a stylistic framework on the representation of serial killer ideology across factual (i.e. media texts), factional (i.e. true crime books) and fictional (i.e. novels) murder narratives. ‘Schema’ is a term commonly used to refer to organised bundles of knowledge in our brains, which are activated once we come across situations we have previously experienced, a ‘group schema’ being one such inventory shared by many. By analysing serial murder narratives across various genres, Gregoriou uncovers a widely shared ‘group schema’ for these murderers, and questions the extent to which real criminal minds are in fact linguistically fictionalised. Gregoriou’s study of the mental functioning and representation of criminal personas can help illuminate our schematic understanding of actual criminal minds.

Download or read book The Serial Killer s Apprentice written by James Renner and published by Gray & Company, Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigative journalist confronts 13 of Northeast Ohio’s most intriguing unsolved crimes and attempts to crack open dark secrets that have baffled Clevelanders for years, including: • Abduction—In 2003, sixteen-year-old Georgina DeJesus disappeared on a West Side street corner, almost exactly one year after teenager Amanda Berry vanished just blocks away. • Stolen Identity—Joseph Newton Chandler of Eastlake was not who he claimed to be. Some think he was the Zodiac killer; others say he was D.B. Cooper, or even Jim Morrison. • Suicide or murder?—Joseph Kupchik hid gambling problems from friends and family until he was found at the bottom of a nine-story parking deck in downtown Cleveland—with multiple stab wounds. • Heist—In 1969, Lakewood bank employee Ted Conrad nabbed $215,000 from the vault one day after his twentieth birthday. The FBI still shows up at his high school reunions. • Controversy—Jeffrey Krotine was thrice tried for the grisly 2003 murder of his wife and ultimately acquitted, to the frustration of Cuyahoga County prosecutors, detectives, and even jurors. These stories venture into dark alleys and seedy strip clubs, as well as comfortable suburbs and cozy small towns, where some of the region’s most horrendous crimes have occurred. Renner’s unblinking eye for detail and unwavering search for the truth make this book a gripping read.

When that ended in disaster, I nearly had it tattooed on my forehead. We kept our distance after that, but I never filled that Avery shaped hole in my heart. Then my ‘brother from another mother’ tells me she’s here to take her position in the family company, and in she sweeps looking better than any of the fantasies I’ve had over the years. Fantastic. Cue the mantra. I don’t know why I think it’d work now. Avery isn’t someone you can ignore. She’s the world’s greatest distraction. At one point, Luke was my everything. Our time together in college changed me on a molecular level and I was so sure we were destined to be that couple people wished they could be. Now, he’s everything I hate in men. The top of my dating checklist says “Not Luke.” I don’t know why I think cannon balling back into his life is a good idea. Tropes: shared past, enemies to lovers, brother's best friend, best friend's sister, office romance, romcom, forced proximity, second chance, strong willed FMC, banter
