Book India s Finance Ministers

Download or read book India s Finance Ministers written by A.K. Bhattacharya and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Independent India has so far witnessed twenty-eight finance ministers. But only a handful of them could leave their mark on the exchequer or North Block, the headquarters of the Indian finance ministry. From Independence to Emergency: India's Finance Ministers 1947-1977 is the story of India's unforgettable finance ministers who shaped India's economy in the first thirty years after Independence. The book highlights the significant difference that these finance ministers made to the management of the Indian economy and to the policy evolution of the government, and who thus left an indelible mark on the psyche of Indian citizens. It attempts to measure the impact these decisions left, not only on India's economic system but also on its political system, and looks at to what extent the decisions were influenced by the socio-economic backgrounds of the finance ministers. Full of interesting anecdotes, the book is the first in-depth account of the crucial role these finance ministers have played in the functioning of India's economy.

Book Nationalism Education and Migrant Identities

Download or read book Nationalism Education and Migrant Identities written by Sumita Mukherjee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role western-education and social standing played in the development of Indian nationalism in the early twentieth century. It highlights the influences that education abroad had on a significant proportion of the Indian population. A large number of Indian students - including key figures such as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Jawaharlal Nehru - took up prominent positions in government service, industry or political movements after having spent their student years in Britain before the Second World War. Having reaped the benefits of the British educational system, they spearheaded movements in India that sought to gain independence from British rule. The author analyses the long-term impact of this short-term migration on Britain, South Asia and Empire and deals with issues of migrant identities and the ways in which travel shaped ideas about the 'Self' and 'Home'. Through this study of the England-Returned, attention is drawn to contemporary concerns about the politicisation of foreign students and the antecedents of the growing South Asian student population in the USA and Europe today, as well as of Britain's growing South Asian diaspora.

Book Market Civilizations

Download or read book Market Civilizations written by Quinn Slobodian and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deep investigation of neoliberalism's proselytizers in Eastern Europe and the Global South Where does free market ideology come from? Recent work on the neoliberal intellectual movement around the Mont Pelerin Society has allowed for closer study of the relationship between ideas, interests, and institutions. Yet even as this literature brought neoliberalism down to earth, it tended to reproduce a European and American perspective on the world. With the notable exception of Augusto Pinochet’s Chile, long seen as a laboratory of neoliberalism, the new literature followed a story of diffusion as ideas migrated outward from the Global North. Even in the most innovative work, the cast of characters remains surprisingly limited, clustering around famous intellectuals like Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek. Market Civilizations redresses this absence by introducing a range of characters and voices active in the transnational neoliberal movement from the Global South and Eastern Europe. This includes B. R. Shenoy, an early member of the Mont Pelerin Society from India, who has been canonized in some circles since the Singh reforms; Manuel Ayau, another MPS president and founder of the Marroquín University, an underappreciated Latin American node in the neoliberal network; Chinese intellectuals who read Hayek and Mises through local circumstances; and many others. Seeing neoliberalism from beyond the industrial core helps us understand what made radical capitalism attractive to diverse populations and how often disruptive policy ideas “went local.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume showcases some notable Indian contributions to development economics, well before the subject became a major part of mainstream economics in the UK and the US. Comprising contributions from some of the most prominent Indian economists of the pre-Independence era, including VG Kale, Brij Narain, LC Jain, BP Adarkar, VKRV Rao, etc, it gives a sampler of the body of scholarly work produced before Independence, reflecting the wide variety of views and approaches to the problem of Indian development. The papers are presented in chronological order to provide an idea of the way Indian economic thinking developed. They deal with topics such as the nature of underdevelopment, surplus labour and disguised unemployment, limitations of the 'trickle-down theory', role of the state in development, etc. The volume also includes biographical notes on all contributors, placing in context their contributions and assessing their originality and contemporary relevance.
