Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Kids on the Street Joseph Plaster explores the informal support networks that enabled abandoned and runaway queer youth to survive in tenderloin districts across the United States. Tracing the history of the downtown lodging house districts where marginally housed youth regularly lived beginning in the late 1800s, Plaster focuses on San Francisco’s Tenderloin from the 1950s to the present. He draws on archival, ethnographic, oral history, and public humanities research to outline the queer kinship networks, religious practices, performative storytelling, and migratory patterns that allowed these kids to foster social support and mutual aid. He shows how they collectively and creatively managed the social trauma they experienced, in part by building relationships with johns, bartenders, hotel managers, bouncers, and other vice district denizens. By highlighting a politics where the marginal position of street kids is the basis for a moral economy of reciprocity, Plaster excavates a history of queer life that has been overshadowed by major narratives of gay progress and pride.

Book A Consumer s Guide to Male Hustlers

Download or read book A Consumer s Guide to Male Hustlers written by Joseph Itiel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Consumer’s Guide to Male Hustlers gives you exciting insight into all you ever wanted to know about hustlers but were too embarrassed to ask. You’ll find answers to questions such as where and how to find hustlers, how much to pay them, and how to make it an experience that is satisfying to both parties. Author Joseph Itiel shares with readers his personal experiences and observations, describing his dealings with hustlers, over a period of about 35 years, in many different countries. Throughout A Consumer’s Guide to Male Hustlers, Itiel narrates personal anecdotes, lending an intimate dimension to his general observations. He describes the hustler scene in the United States and abroad, dispelling many erroneous notions about hustlers by addressing such topics as: under what circumstances sex-for-money arrangements are exploitative (a comparison of male hustlers and female prostitutes) emotional involvement and control between clients and hustlers the notion that hustlers are only for the wealthy whether or not hustlers are likely carriers of sexually transmitted diseases whether or not it is dangerous to pick up hustlers why hustlers hustle the differences between street hustlers, models (or escorts), and masseurs legal issues associated with hustling regular sessions with hustlers as an emotional and libidinal sedative It is the contention of the author that hustlers are an under-used resource in the gay community, especially valuable to those with a vigorous sex appetite but no steady partner. This opportunity is often shunned because potential clients feel guilty about hiring hustlers. The author hopes that by reading this book, you will come to understand that the hustler experience, meeting with hustlers regularly, can be mutually exciting and satisfying for both parties.

Book excerpt: Named the Dolman Travel Book of the Year, The Dead Yard paints an unforgettable portrait of modern Jamaica. Since independence, Jamaica has gradually become associated with twin images--a resort-style travel Eden for foreigners and a new kind of hell for Jamaicans, a society where gangs control the areas where most Jamaicans live and drug lords like Christopher Coke rule elites and the poor alike. Ian Thomson's brave book explores a country of lost promise, where America's hunger for drugs fuels a dependent economy and shadowy politics. The lauded birthplace of reggae and Bob Marley, Jamaica is now sunk in corruption and hopelessness. A synthesis of vital history and unflinching reportage, The Dead Yard is "a fascinating account of a beautiful, treacherous country" (Irish Times).

Book Street Woman

  • Author : Eleanor M. Miller
  • Publisher : Temple University Press
  • Release : 1987-04
  • ISBN : 9780877225096
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Street Woman written by Eleanor M. Miller and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1987-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rich, well-written study, Eleanor Miller analyzes the social organization of street hustling and the lives of the women involved in it. Miller views hustling as "illegal work": prostitution, fraud, forgery, embezzlement, and larceny. Using information garnered from life histories and interviews with 64 female street hustlers in Milwaukee, she vividly describes a female underclass recruited to the world of the street for a substantial period of their lives.Street Woman offers a challenging alternative to recent sociological studies that view the "women's movement" as directly linked to the increasing participation of women in property crime. Miller shows that this increase in crime is a response to sustained poverty. Thus, many sociologists are out of touch with the typical female criminal in this country on both a demographic and personal level. "Typical" female hustlers, as their own words poignantly reveal, are young, poor minority women who have limited education and skills and who also have several children of their own. They adopt characteristic interpersonal relationships and familial forms that insure their survival but which leave the youngsters at greater risk of being recruited to street life.Street Woman is a work of great importance to sociologists and criminologists alike, both in its ramifications for public policy and its explicit implications for further research. Most important, Miller's desire to render a more personal portrait, to enable us to "at least recognize the individual in the picture painted of the group," leaves the reader with haunting portrayals of the women who struggle to survive in the violent, desperate, drug-ridden world of the street. Author note: Eleanor M. Miller is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Book excerpt: Life as Theater is about understanding people and how the dramaturgical way of thinking helps or hinders such understanding. A volume that has deservedly attained the status of a landmark work, this was the first book to explore systematically the material and subject matter of social psychology from the dramaturgical viewpoint. It has been widely used and quoted, and has sparked ferment and debate in fields as diverse as sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, speech communication, and formal theater studies.Life as Theater is organized around five substantive issues in social psychology: Social Relationships as Drama; The Dramaturgical Self; Motivation and Drama; Organizational Dramas; and Political Dramas. This classic text was revised and updated for a second edition in 1990, and includes approximately 66 percent new materials, all featuring individual introductions that provide the dramaturgical perspective and reflect the most learned thinking and work being done within this point of view. This book's sophistication will appeal to the scholar, and its clarity and conciseness to the student. Like its predecessor, it is designed to serve as a primary text or supplementary reader in classes. This new paperback edition includes an introduction by Robert A. Stebbins that explains why, even fifteen years after its publication,Life as Theater remains the best single sourcebook on the dramaturgic perspective as applied in the social sciences.

Because what you don't know can surely kill you, therefore, it's about time to set the rules straight! "For it's a lot of you hustlers out there in the world, who's caught-up in the street game, but got the rules missing." Your father, uncles, or big brothers never had a chance to properly lace you in the game, so you guys are out there getting caught-up on stupid shit that is costing you your life. And a lot of you hustlers do have a lot of game and knowledge about yourself, but it's the things that you don't know or shall I say, that you never been properly exposed to that is getting you caught-up. And it's only right that I take the initiative to try to give you this wisdom and lace you in the Real Rules of life, which will broaden your understanding of the street game, and help you to better understand the consequences, pain, and scandalous deception that do exist out there. Hopefully, this will help you to make a logical decision on whether or not the game is for you? My only objective here is to educate you with the real and true facts that exist in the ghetto games. I'm not trying to inspire you to do wrong, nor do I encourage anyone to get involved in any type of criminal activities. I only desire to teach you the rules to the ghetto games, so that you can determine what is right or wrong for you! And make the decisions as to the path that you chose to take. I took mine, and it resulted in almost a lifetime in the prison system. And many others have made the same bad decisions and mistakes that I've made. That's why now; you have something that we never had that will provide you with a better understanding of the game that a lot of us who fucked our life off didn't have, a chance not to make that same mistake as we did. We all only have one life to live, and the choices that you make will surely determine the outcome of your journey through life. So in delivering this new and powerful urban message to you, it's only right that you pass this information along to your friends, comrades, family, brothers, and cousins! Because the more people who become aware of these very important rules, then the better the game would be, "No telling, this book might stop a young hustler from snitching on you, and others if he get's caught-up, or it might even save your life." The game is deep, and the more people who know about it, then the better off we all are. "Feel me!"
