Book Manufactured Insecurity

Download or read book Manufactured Insecurity written by Esther Sullivan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufactured Insecurity is the first book of its kind to provide an in-depth investigation of the social, legal, geospatial, and market forces that intersect to create housing insecurity for an entire class of low-income residents. Drawing on rich ethnographic data collected before, during, and after mobile home park closures and community-wide evictions in Florida and Texas—the two states with the largest mobile home populations—Manufactured Insecurity forces social scientists and policymakers to respond to a fundamental question: how do the poor access and retain secure housing in the face of widespread poverty, deepening inequality, and scarce legal protection? With important contributions to urban sociology, housing studies, planning, and public policy, the book provides a broader understanding of inequality and social welfare in the United States today.

Book Living Underneath Tables and Other Modern Fables

Download or read book Living Underneath Tables and Other Modern Fables written by Gunnar Jensen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I always wanted to write a book where I call the general populace a bunch of limp dicks and desiccated pussies; however, my editor refused to publish anything so honest. Luckily, I am the master of work-arounds. So, in the guise of modeling hard-dickitude and wet-pussiness, I managed to trick my editor into publishing this memoir by concealing my recriminations inside stories. Follow me as I take Kerouac's On the Road beneath a table. Oddly enough, there were nearly as many drug dealers, sexpots, and weirdoes in an "empty" room at a reception hall as there were if you had hitchhiked across America in the late 1940s. While hiding from both management and low-lifes alike, I secreted myself behind the white shroud of a skirted table. Beneath this table, I found friendship, love and a workable philosophy on how to live life. Lying prone beneath a rectangular skirted table, I learned, ironically enough, how to think outside the box. Also, I've never actually had an editor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of a Girl Named Merle is an autobiography of my life. While I was born and raised in a big city, I am more of a country girl at heart. I had a good childhood, worked most of my life, and married with a family of my own. I had good times, funny times, exciting times, and some sad times, but most of all, a wonderful life. My name is special to me as you will read in my story. You can say it's my name that made me strong. So the point is, a title is just a title, like a book is just a book; but it is the contents, along with its title, that tells the story.

Book Tales From A Hole Road

Download or read book Tales From A Hole Road written by Tim Stevich and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Christine and Tim Stevich decided to renovate a unique old house they had lived in for over a decade, located outside a small, rural town, they thought they had made the right decision. After renovating it into their dream home, they celebrated and settled down to enjoy their quiet new lifestyle. Unfortunately, some in their community had a different idea. With no warning or reason, people from the area began shouting at them from the road, honking at all hours of the night, and even creeping onto their property to look through the windows. Soon, hostile interactions with these people turned into a daily occurrence, and they began to fear for their safety. As the harassment grew uglier and more persistent, the Stevichs turned to the police and town council, only to find them unsympathetic and unable to restore peace to their neighborhood. They were alone and trapped in an unfathomable hell. This is the horrifying story of one couple’s experience with ongoing and vicious harassment. It recounts the daily assaults they endured, the methods they used to cope and defend themselves, and ultimately, how their terrible ordeal came to an end. To anyone who has or continues to face a similar situation, this book stands as a rallying call to do anything you can to secure your peace.

Book Corrections and Beyond My Story of Doing Time on the Other Side of the Bars

Download or read book Corrections and Beyond My Story of Doing Time on the Other Side of the Bars written by Dr. Ivan Godfrey and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-09-23 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ivan Godfrey began his career as a corrections officer in the New York State Corrections System, it was still reeling from the brutal retaliation to the prison riots at Attica. As a young African American, he grew up in the Bronx, then he worked in prisons, such as the notorious Sing-Sing Prison. In fact, Ivan often met inmates he knew on the streets from his New York City neighborhood. His memoir is a wonderful testament to his determination to strive for a better life and take care of his growing family while working in some of the most dangerous prisons in America. It is also a one-of-a-kind window into the life of a young Black prison guard as he struggled to climb the ladder of success despite inherent and overt racial barriers. Now he is an assistant professor, teaching criminal justice and behavioral science at SUNY Ulster CC, forensic mental health at Russell Sage College, and forensic social work and the criminal justice system at the University at Albany School of Social Welfare. Dr. Ivan Godfrey's memoir is an inspiring journey from the streets of the Bronx to the daily psychological and physical violence while working for over twenty years in the NY State Correction System and finally to the halls of academia.
