Unfortunately for Linc, his by-the-book agent nemesis, Ben Green, is already on the case and making him look bad. With Amy's help, Linc will have to dig deep into the history of America's first spies—the Culper Ring—to beat Ben at his own game and stop Dagger before it's too late.

Book Double Vision

Download or read book Double Vision written by William Middleton and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **NAMED ONE OF THE BEST ART BOOKS OF THE DECADE BY ARTNEWS** The first and definitive biography of the celebrated collectors Dominique and John de Menil, who became one of the greatest cultural forces of the twentieth century through groundbreaking exhibits of art, artistic scholarship, the creation of innovative galleries and museums, and work with civil rights. Dominique and John de Menil created an oasis of culture in their Philip Johnson-designed house with everyone from Marlene Dietrich and René Magritte to Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. In Houston, they built the Menil Collection, the Rothko Chapel, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, the Cy Twombly Gallery, and underwrote the Contemporary Arts Museum. Now, with unprecedented access to family archives, William Middleton has written a sweeping biography of this unique couple. From their ancestors in Normandy and Alsace, to their own early years in France, and their travels in South America before settling in Houston. We see them introduced to the artists in Europe and America whose works they would collect, and we see how, by the 1960s, their collection had grown to include 17,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, rare books, and decorative objects. And here is, as well, a vivid behind-the-scenes look at the art world of the twentieth century and the enormous influence the de Menils wielded through what they collected and built and through the causes they believed in.

Book Double Vision

Download or read book Double Vision written by Walter Abish and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2004 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does one ever escape from the family? How much do we understand about our own past? How do we come to be who we are? Walter Abish, the internationally acclaimed author of "How German Is It, examines these questions through the prism of his own experience, and confronts and encapsulates the historic upheavals of the mid-twentieth century in this brilliant, deceptively simple, and quietly wrenching account of his two journeys. The first begins in Vienna, where Abish was born in the 1930s in the Jewish, but not-too-Jewish, household of a prosperous perfumer. Then it ricochets around the world as his parents flee first to France (his mother had to sneak alone across the Italian border), then to war-torn Shanghai under Japanese occupation, just ahead of Mao's army, then to Israel. Incapable of understanding his family's desperate situation, Abish as a boy creates his own private world, filtering out precarious and terrifying realities. Abish describes fantastic events in the coolest tones. In precise, haunting detail, he records the perceptions of a child who registers and remembers what he will only later understand. He writes of the day in the park when a stranger suddenly screams "Jews out!" and he and his frail grandmother run for the exit in a panic as the other children and grandmothers stand and watch; the day his father is released by the Gestapo because a man in the room owes him money that he has never tried to collect and says, "Let Abish go--he's okay"; of the time his father speaks to him about inheriting his perfume business, as they stand on the deck of a ship bound for China. The first journey recounts the flight; the second journey chronicles the return: Abish writes about how, in the 1980s, he went on a tour to Germany to launch the translation of his award-winning novel "How German Is It--a book he wrote without ever having set foot there, deliberately, because he wished to elicit the idea of Germanness in what was "a fantasy of Germany." This tour of what to him is an unfamiliar society includes a side trip to Vienna, where he glimpses the life he might have experienced and has the horrifying feeling that he never left. "Double Vision is a book that cuts to the quick. With unflinching candor, humor, and affection, Abish re-creates the way it feels to be a child and to look at your parents and wonder who they are. To be an adult and catch them in every corner of your personality. To look back on the world of your youth and realize both what you noticed and what you missed. It is a stunning achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a Code Even the NSA Can't Crack But Dillon Richard can. Dillon is a straight-arrow genius with Asperger's syndrome. He's never told a lie. He's never been kissed. And he's never had a badass quantum computer for cracking codes. Until now. In just a few days, Dillon will finish the software to crack the "unbreakable" code that banks and terrorists use to protect their most valuable secrets. Everybody's going to want a piece of Dillon. The Mafia. The NSA. And his two beautiful co-workers, Keryn and Rachel. Who'll get him first? About the Book Double Vision is a hilarious geeky suspense novel about a guy who has no idea how attractive he is to women. In fact, he has no idea how women think at all. Dillon is terribly strait-laced, and he's a bit shocked when he sees that his sexy co-worker Rachel doesn't wear a bra. But he's in for a bigger surprise when Keryn shows him where she hid the quantum computer. Dillon is just a wee bit opinionated, and he can't say a word without offending somebody with his thoughts on science, religion, national security, and the burning question of whether the multiverse is real. Excerpt 1: The passenger door opened and a petite young woman sprang out. She had shoulder-length silky hair of a golden blond color, and she wore a garish pink-and-blue tie-dyed shirt that stretched tight across her chest and did not reach down to her navel. Her faded jeans had a hole in one knee and did not reach up to her navel. She wore an old-fashioned leather fanny pack low around her hips. Dillon thought she looked like one of those supermodels on the covers of magazines in the supermarket. For a second, he simply stared at her. Then he caught himself and looked down at the ground. A wave of dizziness washed over him and he thought for a moment that he was going to fall over. Excerpt 2: Keryn did not like the way the blonde was staring at Dillon. Ogling him. Which was what every woman did the first time they saw Dillon Richard. If any guy on the planet ever deserved the word gorgeous, it was him. And the amazing thing about Dillon was that he had no idea how he affected women. Click the book cover at the top of this page to read more.

Book excerpt: Double Vision from Pat Barker, a gripping novel about the effects of violence on the journalists and artists who have dedicated themselves to representing it In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, reeling from the effects of reporting from New York City, two British journalists, a writer, Stephen Sharkey, and a photographer, Ben Frobisher, part ways. Stephen, facing the almost simultaneous discovery that his wife is having an affair, returns to England shattered; he divorces and quits his job. Ben returns to his vocation. He follows the war on terror to Afghanistan and is killed. Stephen retreats to a cottage in the country to write a book about violence, and what he sees as the reporting journalist's or photographer's complicity in it; it is a book that will build in large part on Ben's writing and photography. Ben's widow, Kate, a sculptor, lives nearby, and as she and Stephen learn about each other their world speedily shrinks, in pleasing but also disturbing ways; Stephen's maid, with whom he has begun an affair, was once lovers with Kate's new studio assistant, an odd local man named Peter. As these connections become clear, Peter's strange behavior around Stephen and Kate begins to take on threatening implications. The sinister events that take place in this small town, so far from the theaters of war Stephen has retreated from, will force him to act instinctively, violently, and to face his most painful revelations about himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamlet tells Horatio that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in his philosophy. In Double Vision, philosopher and literary critic Tzachi Zamir argues that there are more things in Hamlet than are dreamt of--or at least conceded--by most philosophers. Making an original and persuasive case for the philosophical value of literature, Zamir suggests that certain important philosophical insights can be gained only through literature. But such insights cannot be reached if literature is deployed merely as an aesthetic sugaring of a conceptual pill. Philosophical knowledge is not opposed to, but is consonant with, the literariness of literature. By focusing on the experience of reading literature as literature and not philosophy, Zamir sets a theoretical framework for a philosophically oriented literary criticism that will appeal both to philosophers and literary critics. Double Vision is concerned with the philosophical understanding induced by the aesthetic experience of literature. Literary works can function as credible philosophical arguments--not ones in which claims are conclusively demonstrated, but in which claims are made plausible. Such claims, Zamir argues, are embedded within an experiential structure that is itself a crucial dimension of knowing. Developing an account of literature's relation to knowledge, morality, and rhetoric, and advancing philosophical-literary readings of Richard III, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, and King Lear, Zamir shows how his approach can open up familiar texts in surprising and rewarding ways.

Book excerpt: Mike Angelotti reaches out to each of us searching for personal meaning in the every day, the every moment, the every human interplay. He offers insights into our human capacity for unique seeing with the inner eye - contemplating a cottonwood or oak, a deserted anthill, a sunset, shadows in shifting light, a dropped word at the next table. Inner eye and inner ear talk to each other nonstop, telling stories of dirt roads and dream catchers, the murdered and the living left behind, the pain of Yad Vashem and Washington D.C., the wonder of twin magpies dancing on a red tile roof and the silent magic of a place for stars to walk between. Double vision takes many dimensions in the organic mind, the iPhone camera, the paint brush. Too many to count. But always there and changing and present. Through his powerful imagistic poetry in Double Vision II, Mike seeks a conversation with all of us in love with life and the moment to moment dark and light it brings to us as individuals and a human community.

Book excerpt: Hardcover, 192 pages 9.5 × 11.75 in. 24.13 × 29.845 cm. The first ever career retrospective of Los Angeles photographer George Rodriguez. Since the 1950s, Rodriguez has quietly documented multiple social worlds-in California and beyond-that have never before been displayed together, a rare mix of Hollywood and Chicano L.A., film premieres and farmworker strikes, album covers and street scenes, celebrity portraits and civil rights marches.Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Rodriguez, raised in South Los Angeles, led something of a double life as a photographer. He worked for film studios, record labels, and magazines like Tiger Beat, processing film for Hollywood photographers and shooting countless photographs of the era's biggest music and film stars, while also photographing the social movements and protests that were exploding on the streets of Los Angeles and throughout the country: the East Los Angeles Walkouts, the Chicano Moratorium, the United Farm Workers movement, the Sunset Strip riots, among others.Double Vision explores both of these worlds alongside the many other urban scenes Rodriguez has shot over the years, from L.A. gang graffiti and boxing to early hip-hop. A student of Sid Avery and a contemporary of Dennis Hopper, Rodriguez is one of the great visual documentarians of Los Angeles and of the cultural complexities of Mexican-American life.Assembled by Rodriguez himself, in conjunction with scholar and writer Josh Kun, this book will be an invaluable addition to the way we understand identity, popular culture, and civil rights in American life, and a visual biography of one of the country's most important, yet unsung, visual historians.Edited and with texts by Josh Kun Forewords by Dolores Huerta and John Densmore Designed by Brian Roettinger
