Book Dostoevsky The Bible and History A close look into the layers of the novel Demons

Download or read book Dostoevsky The Bible and History A close look into the layers of the novel Demons written by Sean Cameron and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fyodor Dostoevsky's Demons (1871-1872) is a novel that depicts a real event in Russian history, the "Nachaev affair" of 1869, in which an individual, Sergei Nachaev, a Nihilist revolutionary who was sponsored by another famous revolutionary, philosopher, and anarchist: Mikhail Bakunin-who has been called the father of anarchist theory, was involved, if not totally responsible for the murder of a student who was intent on revealing some of the activities of Nachaev. Nachaev represents a new form of revolutionary spirit which Dostoevsky imparts to his character Pyotr Steponovich Verkovensky in which what was only a product of intellectual ideation becomes a wild and uncontrollable force unto itself. Dostoesvky translates this anarchist drama into a powerful myth that serves as a testament and warning of the dangers of revolutionary methods and ideas. An important message for today's heavily polarized world.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Demons (The Possessed / The Devils) - The Unabridged Garnett Translation" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Demons is an 1872 novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Though titled The Possessed in the initial English translation, Dostoyevsky scholars and later translations favour the titles The Devils or Demons. An extremely political book, Demons is a testimonial of life in Imperial Russia in the late 19th century. As the revolutionary democrats begin to rise in Russia, different ideologies begin to collide. Dostoyevsky casts a critical eye on both the liberal idealists, portraying their ideas and ideological foundation as demonic, and the conservative establishment's ineptitude in dealing with those ideas and their social consequences. The entire novel takes place in a small town outside of Petersberg and is narrated by a man named Mr. Govorov. Mr. Govorov does not witness every conversation first hand, but nonetheless the narrator describes the story as if he partook in every situation or as a chronicler, who had the events described to him. We know very little of Mr. Govorov, except that he is a close friend of Stephan Trofimovich. Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky ( 1821 – 1881) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist and philosopher. Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the context of the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia. Many literary critics rate him as one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature.

Believing he is beyond guilt and remorse, he commits terrible crimes, infects others with ideas he does not believe in and accepts love he does not deserve. Together they train terrorists who are willing to go to any lengths to achieve their goals – even if the mission means suicide. But when it seems the group is about to be discovered, will their recruits be willing to kill one of their own circle in order to cover their tracks? Partly based on the real-life case of a student murdered by his fellow revolutionaries, Dostoyevsky’s sprawling novel is a powerful and prophetic, yet lively and often comic depiction of nineteenth-century Russia, and a savage indictment of the madness and self-destruction of those who use violence to serve their beliefs

Perhaps the most complicated and for non-Russians the most confusing of Dostoevsky's major novels, as much as the novel reflected its times, it still is relevant today exploring the danger of idealism and liberalism turning increasingly to violence when it lacks spiritual direction. Dostoevsky's questions and novel are as relevant today as they were almost 150 years ago. This translated edition of The Possessed has been revised and abridged by Thomas Beyer so that readers may more easily follow the story and themes of the original, without sacrificing the "essential Dostoevsky." Thomas Beyer is the C.V. Starr Professor of Russian at Middlebury College in Vermont where he has been reading and teaching Dostoevsky for the past forty years.

Book excerpt: Demons is an extraordinary social satire whose ending will leave you reeling. It is the middle of winter. Seven friends travel to a remote coastal beach house for the weekend. Without phones, internet or television, they sit around the fireplace, telling stories, each exposing the foibles of humankind. But as a storm rolls in and torrential rain cuts the party off from the outside world, it soon becomes clear that some secrets are best kept hidden. Demons is an extraordinary novel by one of Australia's great writers. Wayne Macauley is the author of three highly acclaimed novels: Blueprints for a Barbed-Wire Canoe, Caravan Story and, most recently, The Cook, which was shortlisted for the Western Australian Premier's Book Award, a Victorian Premier's Literary Award and the Melbourne Prize Best Writing Award. He lives in Melbourne. 'Macauley has ingeniously refurbished an old tale to capture the perplexing vacuity of a generation...a fierce and uncomfortable novel about contemporary Australian life that drives us to ask why we are who we are, as it simultaneously makes us wish we were better.' Weekend Australian 'Absorbing.' Saturday Paper 'Brilliant, thought-provoking.' Otago Daily Times 'Absorbing, thought-provoking and altogether quite brilliant.' BookMooch 'The novel [has] the potential to resonate with Australians in the same way as Christos Tsiolkas's The Slap, only it's darker and more complex.' Herald Sun/Courier Mail 'Demons is a compelling, can't-put-it-down book. Not because of any thrilling action, but because of its ordinary, troubled characters, their ordinary everyday struggles and the stories they tell. In a way the novel is like a collection of short stories, although every one of them leads us to understand more about the teller and the listeners as they start to hit uncomfortably close to home. Each story and how it is told offers fascinating insight into human nature in a humorous, yet sharp critique of contemporary society and its many flaws.' Surf Coast Times 'The pace is headlong; the disintegration relentless. Startling, discomforting, and not likely to be underrated.' Auckland Herald

Book excerpt: This novel is an allegory of the potentially catastrophic consequences of the political and moral nihilism that were becoming prevalent in Russia in the 1860s. A fictional town descends into chaos as it becomes the focal point of an attempted revolution, orchestrated by master conspirator Pyotr Verkhovensky. The mysterious aristocratic figure of Nikolai Stavrogin-Verkhovensky's counterpart in the moral sphere-dominates the book, exercising an extraordinary influence over the hearts and minds of almost all the other characters. The idealistic, western-influenced generation of the 1840s, epitomized in the character of Stepan Verkhovensky (who is both Pyotr Verkhovensky's father and Nikolai Stavrogin's childhood teacher), are presented as the unconscious progenitors and helpless accomplices of the 'demonic' forces that take possession of the town.
