Book excerpt: Larry lay under the trees upon the soft, green grass, with his hat tilted far forward over his eyes and his grimy hands clasped together beneath his head, wishing with all his might first one thing and then another, but always that it was not so warm. When the children had gone to school in the morning, they had seen Larry's figure, as they passed along the street, stretched out full-length beneath the trees near the gutter curbstone; and when they returned, there he was still. They looked at him with curiosity; and some of the boys even paused beside him and bent over to see if he were sunstruck. He let them talk about him and discuss him and wonder at him as they would, never stirring, and scarcely daring to breathe, lest they be induced to stay and question him. He wanted to be alone. He wanted to lie lazily under the trees, and watch the sunbeams as they flirted with the leaves, and hear the birds gossip with one another, and feel the breeze as it touched his hot temples and soothed him with its soft caresses.

Download or read book At All Events written by R.E. Mortleman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At All Events" is former commercial fashion artist Rose Mortleman's warm and witty account of growing up in a working-class family in the London suburb of Twickenham during the 1930s and 1940s. The only daughter of Fred and Dorothy Pickles, a painter-decorator and a former cook in service, Rose paints a vivid picture of her happy family home and the colourful characters who peopled her childhood. In this gentle tale, skilfully told, we follow the author's uneasy journey from toddler to teenage artist. Along the way we meet a cast of relatives, neighbours, teachers and friends vividly recalled from a bygone era. (Fred and Dorothy were born when Victoria was on the throne.) The text is accompanied by original photographs and a selection of the author's cartoons from the period.
Download or read book Blackpool in Film and Popular Music written by Ewa Mazierska and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-12 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines Blackpool, Britain’s first and largest working-class seaside resort as a location for the production and consumption of British film and popular music, and the meaning of ‘Blackpool’ in films and songs. It examines representation of Blackpool in films such as Hindle Wakes, A Taste of Honey, Bhaji on the Beach, Away, Bob’s Weekend, The Harry Hill Movie and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, linking it to the concepts of heterotopia, purgatory, fantasy, simulacra and the carnivalesque. It also presents music in Blackpool through the history of its venues and examines development of punk and grime music in this seaside town. The authors argue that Blackpool in filmic and musical texts often stands for British culture, but increasingly for culture which is remembered or imagined rather than present and real.
