Book Doppler Radar Investigation of Flow Patterns Within Thunderstorms

Download or read book Doppler Radar Investigation of Flow Patterns Within Thunderstorms written by Michael J. Kraus and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on airflow in six New England thunderstorms was obtained from quasi-horizontal observations by a single Doppler radar. Radial velocity fields in four of the storms showed well organized patterns throughout an appreciable range of height. Vertical cross sections of the horizontal component field, coupled with some reflectivity information, provided a basis for inferring regions where vertical motion was strong. Computed horizontal flow fields consistent with the observed component fields showed environmental flow basically through the storm except at mid-levels.

Book Doppler Radar Investigation of Flow Patterns Within Severe Thunderstorms

Download or read book Doppler Radar Investigation of Flow Patterns Within Severe Thunderstorms written by Michael J. Kraus and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four severe thunderstorms were observed on a single day by the AFCRL 5.4-cm Doppler radar at Sudbury, Massachusetts. Quasihorizontal radial velocity information was used to construct maps depicting the mean within-storm flow at different elevation angles over a period of about 20 minutes. Well organized patterns in the velocity field showed either persistence or slow evolution in time throughout an appreciable range of height. The merits of this single Doppler method for the investigation of future outbreaks are discussed. (Author).

Book Doppler Radar Investigation of Tornadic and Lightning Producing Storms in Northeast Colorado

Download or read book Doppler Radar Investigation of Tornadic and Lightning Producing Storms in Northeast Colorado written by Richard Michael Lucci and published by . This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinematic, microphysical, and electrical characteristics of two multicell thunderstorms observed in northeast Colorado were investigated using single and dual Doppler radar and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning data. These particular thunderstorms were chosen because of their generation of weak short- lived tornadoes and CG lightning dominated by positive flashes. Storm data was collected using the multiparameter, CSU-CHILL, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mile High Doppler radars. Various radar analysis methods were employed in an effort to infer origins of rotation, tornado formation mechanisms, and the storm structure responsible for the observed lightning patterns. Single Doppler techniques included multiparameter measurements, calculations of azimuthal shear, histogram analyses, a study of constant altitude and vertical cross-section data, and an examination of the unedited reflectivity and radial velocity fields. Dual-Doppler data was used to synthesize the three dimensional wind field.

Book Understanding Severe and Unusual Weather

Download or read book Understanding Severe and Unusual Weather written by Joe R. Eagleman and published by Kindle Direct Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of severe and unusual weather should be a fundamental part of everyone's storehouse of knowledge. We live in a world that is at least occasionally dominated by severe and unusual weather. Many types of severe weather are sufficiently rare that a common defense mechanism of many people is to assume that they will never be directly affected. However, there is hardly a place in the whole world that does not have some peculiar aspect of weather that requires some degree of understanding and preparedness in order to avoid loss of property and, perhaps, even life itself. Fortunately, no particular location has all the different kinds of unusual and severe weather; thus, coastal areas are exposed to the tremendous power of the hurricane that bring high winds and frequently produce flood conditions, while within the interior United States, where hurricanes are not a threat, such severe types of weather as tornadoes, hailstorms, and blizzards are sufficiently frequent that an understanding of these storms is essential when traveling or living in this part of the United States. Although lightning is a greater hazard in some parts of the world than others, there are very few locations, including Alaska and the Desert Southwest, where occasional severe thunderstorms do not develop numerous lightning strokes. A proper understanding is important for flash flooding, derechos, mountainadoes, haboobs and other unusual weather. People have different responses to everyday weather from resistant to feeling dominated by it. You can find your level of response from a self test that is provided.
