This one of a kind standalone romantic comedy in the Queerly Devoted series by Sarah Robinson is a boundary pushing bisexual romance as firefighter Mike Dougherty—stage name Madame Michelle in drag—meets Isa Reyes, a Filipina crisis management professional who has no interest in adding any more drama to her life. Isa Reyes is five foot two and exists solely on her father’s lumpia and her mother’s cynicism to fuel her sixty hour work weeks in crisis management. When she’s not working behind the scenes on the latest political scandal, hostile corporate takeover, or bailing a client out of jail, Isa finds herself sitting on the sidelines of her best friends’ lives. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Isa is tired of watching life pass her by and is determined to find the perfect alpha male to ride off into the sunset with. In walks the alpha male of all alpha males—Michael Dougherty, lieutenant firefighter at DC Fire & EMS and Mr. July in the charity firefighter calendar, and her new point of contact for her contract. It’s her job to fix the department’s reputation and he’s there to give her everything she needs…in more ways than just professional. But there’s a lot more to Mike than meets the eye and when she runs into him on stage in a very different context, she realizes that everything she thought she wanted in a man might be in question. Battling the expectations of her family, the professionalism of her job, her lifetime living on the sidelines, and the pull of her heart, Isa navigates her own stereotypes as she takes a leap onto center stage.

Book Prion Diseases and Copper Metabolism

Download or read book Prion Diseases and Copper Metabolism written by D. Brown and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-10-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International authorities here investigate research into the prion diseases which include Scrapie of sheep, BSE the "Mad Cow" disease, and CJD one of the human diseases. The role of metals in these diseases has become of great importance, linking it with some of the changes in Alzheimer's disease. The book focuses on metabolism of copper and manganese which are found in these diseases. It stems from proceedings of the international workshop at Christ's College, Cambridge University in 2001. After an introduction on the history of research into the diseases, there are discussions on the effects of copper on biochemical properties and prion proteins of brain cells, and newer techniques for their study. There is also a section on the relationship of Alzheimers disease to prion diseases. - Focuses on metabolism of copper and manganese, which are found in Scrapie of sheep; BSE, the "Mad Cow" disease; and CJD, one of the human prion diseases - Discusses the effects of copper on biochemical properties, prion proteins of brain cells and new techniques for their study - Stems from the proceedings of the international workshop at Christ's College, Cambridge University in 2001

Book Prions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bridgette V. Doupher
  • Publisher : Nova Publishers
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9781600210198
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Prions written by Bridgette V. Doupher and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prions are disease-causing agents that are neither bacterial nor fungal nor viral and contain no genetic material. A prion is a protein that occurs normally in a harmless form. By folding into an aberrant shape, the normal prion turns into a rogue agent. It then co-opts other normal prions to become rogue prions. Prions have been held responsible for a number of degenerative brain diseases, including scrapie (a fatal disease of sheep and goats), mad cow disease, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, fatal familial insomnia, kuru, an unusual form of hereditary dementia known as Gertsmann-Straeussler-Scheinker disease, and possibly some cases of Alzheimer's disease. This book presents the latest research in this dynamic field.

Book Physiological function of the cellular prion protein PrPc 1hnc

Download or read book Physiological function of the cellular prion protein PrPc 1hnc written by Sanja Ramljak and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physiological role of the cellular prion protein (PrPc) is still not fully understood. This study gives a further insight into the possible physiological function(s) of PrPc via recognizing proteome changes influenced by different levels of PrPc expression in human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 and PrPc-deficient (Prnp0/0 ) ell line. The two cell lines gave largely non-intersecting results. A high proportion of proteins deregulated following PrPc overexpression in HEK 293 cells is involved in energy metabolism and cellular homeostasis. Hence, the previously reported increased sensitivity of PrPc overexpressing cells to apoptotic stimuli might be caused by perturbed expression of proteins essential for energy production and maintenance of cellular homeostasis. A particularly significant point of the present study is PrPc overexpression-induced regulation of several proteins which are known to contribute to Alzheimer and Parkinson disease pathogenesis. This finding may be helpful in understanding the common molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of prion diseases and other neurodegenerative disorders. Conversely, the introduction of the human prion protein gene (PRNP) into Prnp0/0 cells correlated positively with regulation of proteins mainly implied in protection against oxidative stress and apoptosis. This finding is in line with earlier reports demonstrating rescue of Prnp0/0 neurons from apoptosis following an introduction of prion protein gene. Altogether, the presence/absence and the level of PrPc expression seem to be crucial for the fluctuation between PrPc's pro- and anti- apoptotic properties. In addition, this study provides first time evidence for PrPc-induced up-regulation of the glycolytic enzyme, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) after transient focal cerebral ischemia in wild-type mice as compared to Prnp00 mice. The possibility that LDH and its product lactate, known to protect neural tissue against hypoxia/ischemia, might be involved in previously described PrPc-mediated neuroprotection against ischemic injury is considered.
