Book Indigenous Heritage and Intellectual Property

Download or read book Indigenous Heritage and Intellectual Property written by Silke von Lewinski and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For indigenous cultures, property is an alien concept. Yet the market-driven industries of the developed world do not hesitate to exploit indigenous raw materials, from melodies to plants, using intellectual property law to justify their behaviour. Existing intellectual property law, for the most part, allows industries to use indigenous knowledge and resources without asking for consent and without sharing the benefits of such exploitation with the indigenous people themselves. It should surprise nobody that indigenous people object. Recognizing that the commercial exploitation of indigenous knowledge and resources takes place in the midst of a genuine and significant clash of cultures, the eight contributors to this important book explore ways in which intellectual property law can expand to accommodate the interests of indigenous people to their traditional knowledge, genetic resources, indigenous names and designations, and folklore. In so doing they touch upon such fundamental issues and concepts as the following: collective rights to the living heritage; relevant human rights norms; benefit-sharing in biological resources; farmers rights; the practical needs of documentation, assistance, and advice; the role of customary law; bioprospecting and biopiracy; and public domain. As a starting point toward mutual understanding and a common basis for communication between Western-style industries and indigenous communities, Indigenous Heritage and Intellectual Property is of immeasurable value. It offers not only an in-depth evaluation of the current legal situation under national, regional and international law including analyses of the Convention on Biological Diversity and other international instruments, as well as initiatives of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and other international bodies but also probes numerous further possibilities. While no one concerned with indigenous culture or environmental issues can afford to ignore it, this book is also of special significance to practitioners and policymakers in intellectual property law in relation to indigenous heritage. This book, here in its second edition, presents the most recent state of knowledge in the field.

Book Tracing Your Coalmining Ancestors

Download or read book Tracing Your Coalmining Ancestors written by Brian Elliott and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1920s there were over a million coalminers working in over 3000 collieries across Great Britain, and the industry was one of the most important and powerful in British history. It dominated the lives of generations of individuals, their families and communities, and its legacy is still with us today _ many of us have a coalmining ancestor. ??Yet family historians often have problems in researching their mining forebears. Locating the relevant records, finding the sites of the pits, and understanding the work involved and its historical background can be perplexing. That is why Brian Elliott's concise, authoritative and practical handbook will be so useful, for it guides researchers through these obstacles and opens up the broad range of sources they can go to in order to get a vivid insight into the lives and experiences of coalminers in the past. ??His overview of the coalmining history _ and the case studies and research tips he provides _ will make his book rewarding reading for anyone looking for a general introduction to this major aspect of Britain's industrial heritage. His directory of regional and national sources and his commentary on them will make this guide an essential tool for family historians searching for an ancestor who worked in coalmining underground, on the pit top or just lived in a mining community.??As featured in Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine and the Barnsley Chronicle.

Book Dehradoon An Illustrated Journey of A City

Download or read book Dehradoon An Illustrated Journey of A City written by Mauli Shree Mishra and published by COPAL Publishing Group. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is remembrance to the fading memories of a city and takes its readers on a journey of 'Vale of Doon'. It tries to tell the story of Doon Valley through its narratives and illustrations, which we have often found ourself wondering about when passing by an old deteriorating structure hiding beneath green monsoon moss in a forgotten part of the city, sitting by a canal or an abandoned bridge watching the setting sun through the blue‐tangerine skies or while taking a walk through a forest bathed in wintery sunshine. Doon Valley has been nothing less than a magical land with its inhabitants of kinds who have coexisted since time immemorial, but this coexistence of man and nature is now threatened by insensitive and unscientific development. The book urges its readers to reflect and act in order to protect their valley for future generations and times to come. The book tries to put together the otherwise ignored fragments of the city heritage that still stand, awaiting to be torn apart by the insensitive developmental activity but hoping to be rescued and bring people closer to the Dehra of old times.

Book excerpt: In this book the author has come out with an explanation of the age old Socio-culture-Religious, processes of the traditional life style of people who still have formidable beliefs in their kinship and social organization/status. This book has drawn attention to what have in the past been more or less back-waters of the literary main-stream, save for some actions in Gazetteers or in the books left behind by foreign travellers during the British regime, which is still pretty much an unbeaten track for others.
