Book excerpt: Max Landis, acclaimed screenwriter of the hit film CHRONICLE, presents seven stories from the life of the man who will be the Man of Steel, seven pivotal moments that turned a sometimes good, sometimes angry, sometimes funny, always human, all-American alien into the world’s first superhero. THIS IS NOT A SUPERMAN COMIC. This is the story of Clark Kent, a Kansas farm boy who happens to be from another planet. It’s the story of a scared young kid with impossible powers, of a teenage delinquent with a lot to learn, of a reporter with a nose for the truth who’s keeping the biggest secret the world has ever known. This is not the Superman you know. Not yet. Illustrated by some of the greatest artists in comics today-including Jock (BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR), Francis Manapul (DETECTIVE COMICS), Jae Lee (BATMAN/SUPERMAN), Joëlle Jones (LADY KILLER), Nick Dragotta (EAST OF WEST) and more with covers by Ryan Sook (ACTION COMICS)-SUPERMAN: AMERICAN ALIEN tells the very human story of the Last Son of Krypton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spirit of Grant Morrison's groundbreaking DOOM PATROL is captured in this debut series starring the cult-favorite misfits as a part of Gerard Way's new Young Animal imprint. Flex Mentallo, Robotman, Rebis, Crazy Jane, and more are back to twist minds and take control. This new take on a classic embraces and reimagines the Morrison run's signature surrealism and irreverence. Incorporating bold, experimental art and a brash tone to match a new generation of readers, Gerard Way's DOOM PATROL establishes radical new beginnings, breaks new ground, and honors the warped team dynamic of the world's strangest heroes. This abstract and unexpected ensemble series nods at the Doom Patrol's roots by continuing to break the barriers of the traditional superhero genre. Collects issues #1-6. DOOM PATROL is the flagship title of Young Animal--a four-book grassroots mature reader imprint, creatively spearheaded by Gerard Way, bridging the gap between the DCU and Vertigo, and focusing on the juxtaposition between visual and thematic storytelling.

Book Jeff Lemire

Download or read book Jeff Lemire written by Dale Jacobs and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 2019 interview with the webzine DC in the 80s, Jeff Lemire (b. 1976) discusses the comics he read as a child growing up in Essex County, Ontario—his early exposure to reprints of Silver Age DC material, how influential Crisis on Infinite Earths and DC’s Who’s Who were on him as a developing comics fan, his first reading of Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, and his transition to reading the first wave of Vertigo titles when he was sixteen. In other interviews, he describes discovering independent comics when he moved to Toronto, days of browsing comics at the Beguiling, and coming to understand what was possible in the medium of comics, lessons he would take to heart as he began to establish himself as a cartoonist. Many cartoonists deflect from questions about their history with comics and the influences of other artists, while others indulge the interviewer briefly before attempting to steer the questions in another direction. But Lemire, creator of Essex County Trilogy, Sweet Tooth, The Nobody, and Trillium, seems to bask in these discussions. Before he was ever a comics professional, he was a fan. What can be traced in these interviews is the story of the movement from comics fan to comics professional. In the twenty-nine interviews collected in Jeff Lemire: Conversations, readers see Lemire come to understand the process of collaboration, the balancing act involved in working for different kinds of comics publishers like DC and Marvel, the responsibilities involved in representing characters outside his own culture, and the possibilities that exist in the comics medium. We see him embrace a variety of genres, using each of them to explore the issues and themes most important to him. And we see a cartoonist and writer growing in confidence, a working professional coming into his own.

Book Uncanny Bodies

Download or read book Uncanny Bodies written by Scott T. Smith and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superhero comics reckon with issues of corporeal control. And while they commonly deal in characters of exceptional or superhuman ability, they have also shown an increasing attention and sensitivity to diverse forms of disability, both physical and cognitive. The essays in this collection reveal how the superhero genre, in fusing fantasy with realism, provides a visual forum for engaging with issues of disability and intersectional identity (race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality) and helps to imagine different ways of being in the world. Working from the premise that the theoretical mode of the uncanny, with its interest in what is simultaneously known and unknown, ordinary and extraordinary, opens new ways to think about categories and markers of identity, Uncanny Bodies explores how continuums of ability in superhero comics can reflect, resist, or reevaluate broader cultural conceptions about disability. The chapters focus on lesser-known characters—such as Echo, Omega the Unknown, and the Silver Scorpion—as well as the famous Barbara Gordon and the protagonist of the acclaimed series Hawkeye, whose superheroic uncanniness provides a counterpoint to constructs of normalcy. Several essays explore how superhero comics can provide a vocabulary and discourse for conceptualizing disability more broadly. Thoughtful and challenging, this eye-opening examination of superhero comics breaks new ground in disability studies and scholarship in popular culture. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Sarah Bowden, Charlie Christie, Sarah Gibbons, Andrew Godfrey-Meers, Marit Hanson, Charles Hatfield, Naja Later, Lauren O’Connor, Daniel J. O'Rourke, Daniel Pinti, Lauranne Poharec, and Deleasa Randall-Griffiths.
