Book excerpt: This book details the struggles of the over 500 European women who travelled or lived in Canada's Northwest Territories before 1940 to set up a home in the harsh environment. The geography also forced them to adjust they way they worked. For instance, letters and reports of the Grey Nuns who worked alongside the Oblate Fathers in the Mackenzie indicate the hardships imposed by their situation but also show how driven they were by their missionary purpose.

Book Adventuring in Dictionaries

Download or read book Adventuring in Dictionaries written by John Considine and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventuring in Dictionaries: New Studies in the History of Lexicography brings together seventeen papers on the making of dictionaries from the sixteenth century to the present day. The first five treat English and French lexicography in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Heberto Fernandez and Monique Cormier discuss the outside matter of French–English bilingual dictionaries; Kusujiro Miyoshi re-assesses the influence of Robert Cawdrey; John Considine uncovers the biography of Henry Cockeram; Antonella Amatuzzi discusses Pierre Borel’s use of his predecessors; and Fredric Dolezal investigates multi-word units in the dictionary of John Wilkins and William Lloyd. Linda Mitchell’s account of dictionaries as behaviour guides in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries leads on to Giovanni Iamartino’s presentation of words associated with women in the dictionary of Samuel Johnson, and Thora Van Male’s of the ornaments in the Encyclopédie. Nineteenth-century and subsequent topics are treated by Anatoly Liberman on the growth of the English etymological dictionary; Julie Coleman on dictionaries of rhyming slang; Laura Pinnavaia on Richardson’s New Dictionary and the changing vocabulary of English; Peter Gilliver on early editorial decisions and reconsiderations in the making of the Oxford English Dictionary; Anne Dykstra on the use of Latin as the metalanguage in Joost Halbertsma’s Lexicon Frisicum; Laura Santone on the “Dictionnaire critique” serialized in Georges Bataille’s Surrealist review Documents; Sylvia Brown on the stories of missionary lexicography behind the Eskimo–English Dictionary of 1925; and Michael Adams on the legacies of the Early Modern English Dictionary project. The diverse critical perspectives of the leading lexicographers and historians of lexicography who contribute to this volume are united by a shared interest in the close reading of dictionaries, and a shared concern with the making and reading of dictionaries as human activities, which cannot be understood without attention to the lives of the people who undertook them.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 25 pages

Download or read book Paul F Peck Papers written by Paul Frederick Peck and published by . This book was released on 1892 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sources in the Paul F. Peck papers document the intellectual development of this Grinnell College professor and provide insights into his philosophy and methods for teaching history at the collegiate level during the early 20th century. The earliest source in the collection is the 1892 record book he kept as secretary of the Philosophian Literary and Debating Society while a high school student at Stuart, Iowa. Representative of his years as a student at Iowa College (later Grinnell College) is the oration for which he won the 1897 Hill Prize awarded by that institution. Materials from his time as a history professor at Bloomsburg State Normal School (Pennsylvania) and Grinnell College include a scrapbook of clippings on topics related to history, political science, and the arts collected from 1901 to 1907; history lecture syllabi collected from the State University of Iowa, and from the Grinnell-Harvard lecture exchange series that Professor Peck participated in, 1899-1917; programs from high school and college debate and declamatory events judged by Peck, 1910-1915; and ephemera from the educational tours of Europe he organized and led during the 1920s. The Peck papers also include a set of correspondence dating from 1901-1925, and a shared family regard for higher education is evident in several letters received from his aunt Jennie Peck, an instructor with the Missionary Department of the National Teachers Institute in Washington, D.C.A small subject file related to Peck's work for the American Red Cross during World War I contains two photographs of him in uniform. Also of note is an address Professor Peck presented at a State University of Iowa convocation in 1917 on South America and the world war.
