Download or read book Our Time Has Come written by Sylvester Stephens and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging and provocative new novel that challenges all the political, social, and economic inadequacies of the American civil rights system and its discrimination towards black Americans. In a dazzling display of political insight and masterful storytelling, Sylvester Stephens presents a new novel about what has been wrong throughout America's past—and what can be made right in its future. Solomon Chambers is born in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1940. His parents and his uncle moved to Michigan from Mississippi years earlier, hoping to avoid the racism of their home state. Solomon eventually becomes a lawyer, and when his uncle is murdered in Mississippi he serves as a witness for the prosecution—and has his first real brush with the reality of racism. Later, in the year 2007, Affirmative Action and the Voting Rights Acts are abolished. When African Americans charge the United States government with violating their constitutional rights, Solomon is called to try the most significant case of his career, and one of the most important in history. Full of powerful political commentary and dramatic narrative, Our Time Has Come is the inspiring story of a man who must confront himself and his own history—and fight for a just future that can heal the pains of a violent past.
Download or read book OUT TUO written by Hollace M. Metzger and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the winter of 2012-13 and shortly after receiving her French residency, Metzger left a life she cultivated in Europe and many dreams behind. OUT TUO follows a five-year journey to recover those dreams, if not see them in a new light and from an altered, coming-of-age perspective. Now characteristic of the author, her Sixth Book of Poetry and Writings leans on existentialist thought to stress the idea of how, in fact, ?The only way out is through?, and while living in a land much more foreign than the America and Western Europe she left behind ? America, ten years later.

Joining their flight this time is o’Johnny, the evil Sheriff Pugh’s disabled little brother, who has uncanny abilities. Escaping danger for a while, Papa and Calley try to start a new life as horse traders, only to find themselves branded as horse thieves when o’Johnny and a mysterious white ghost horse begin rescuing abused horses from their masters. Can Papa and Calley escape the noose and save all the horses that Johnny and the White Horse liberate? Or will their own hot tempers send them down the Devil’s Fork, from which no one ever returns? Proving himself a master storyteller once again, Bill Wittliff spins a yarn as engrossing as the stories his own Papa told him long ago, stories that inspired The Devil’s Backbone, The Devil’s Sinkhole, and The Devil’s Fork.
Download or read book Great New American Short Stories written by Robert Voyles and published by Hallmark Emporium Publishing. This book was released on 1998-09 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what constitutes American, since the United States is such a melting pot, but this collection of nine short stories does capture the American experience. Perhaps diversity is what makes Great New American Short Stories so good.Voyles' stories are about the rich, the poor, the educated, the street-smart. They are written from a wide variety of experiences. For instance, one story is a witty tale of a quiet man's revenge on a nosy neighbor, while another is a lottery-winning man's revenge on his nagging wife. What if you found a suitcase full of money? What if you came face-to-face with someone you'd just vented your road rage upon? What if you were a prisoner in quarantine? In Me and Frank Cash at Camp Goode, the author writes about one man's experience in South Korea while in the Army. In The Rosebush, a woman's favorite adopted daughter dies unexpectedly. The mother plants a rosebush by her daughter's grave and tends to it lovingly. The story is told from another daughter's point of view.Voyles writes with the authenticity of the characters in mind.
