Book The Complete Folktales of A N Afanas ev

Download or read book The Complete Folktales of A N Afanas ev written by Jack V. Haney and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev represent the largest single collection of folktales in any European language and perhaps in the world. Widely regarded as the Russian Grimm, Afanas’ev collected folktales from throughout the Russian Empire in what are now regarded as the three East Slavic languages, Byelorusian, Russian, and Ukrainian. The result of his own collecting, the collecting of friends and correspondents, and in a few cases his publishing of works from earlier and forgotten collections is truly phenomenal. In his lifetime, Afanas’ev published more than 575 tales in his most popular and best-known work, Narodnye russkie skazki. In addition to this basic collection he prepared a volume of Russian legends, many on religious themes, an anthology of mildly obscene tales, and voluminous writings on Slavic folk life and Slavic mythology. His works were subject to the strict censorship of ecclesiastical and state authorities that lasted until the demise of the Soviet Union at the end of the twentieth century. Overwhelmingly, his particular emendations were of a stylistic nature, while those of the censors mostly concerned content. The censored tales are generally not included. Up to now, there has been no complete English-language version of the Russian folktales of Afanas’ev. This translation is based on L. G. Barag and N. V. Novikov’s edition (Moscow: Nauka, 1984-1986), widely regarded as the authoritative edition. The present edition includes commentaries to each tale as well as its international classification number.

Book excerpt: "A spellbinding masterpiece! Passionate, action-packed, and fulfilling. I adore Mila, and I hunger for swoon-worthy Asher, longing for them to come together while holding on to the hope that Mila will continue to resist. Every word is delicious! FIVE STARS!" USA Today Bestselling Author, Addison Cain "It's the fight, isn't it? The struggle. The idea that I'll pin you down and take what I want..." He smiled, slow and dangerous. Watching me struggle to deny him. Watching me fail... Bound to a man I hate, I'm trapped. All that I was is gone. Taken by a dog of the Empire, my once limitless power now feeds the beast who dares to call himself my equal. Captain Asher Rawlings has proven himself to be a man apart. Relentless. Driven. Stripped bare and exposed, I am helpless to suffer his every debased whim. Made to swallow his bitter lies of safety and protection. Protection I didn't need before he dressed me in chains I cannot remove. Chains that funnel my goddess-given power directly to him. And though he might be the last of the rare and dangerous things, he too is indentured to a higher power. Compelled to obey, he is ordered to burn my would-be saviors to ash—and he'll use my power to do it. While death and vengeance don't wear the faces I'd dreamed of, my fall has taught me how to bend. To see the minute, overlooked details for the gift the can be, and know there is always another way out. A perfect moment to strike. Even if I have to be remade to seize it, because it's always been this. Freedom, or death.

Book The Forging of a Rebel

Download or read book The Forging of a Rebel written by Arturo Barea and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This astonishing autobiographical trilogy—hailed by George Orwell and Gabriel García Márquez—is “the most definitive and personal account of Spain’s history during . . . the 20th century” (Guardian). The Forging of a Rebel is an unsurpassed account of Spanish history and society from early in the twentieth century through the cataclysmic events of the Spanish Civil War. Arturo Barea’s masterpiece charts the author's coming-of-age in a bruised and starkly unequal Spain. These three volumes recount in lively detail Barea's daily experience of his country as it pitched toward disaster: we are taken from his youthful play and rebellion on the streets of Madrid, to his apprenticeship in the business world and to the horrors he witnessed as part of the Spanish army in Morocco during the Rif War. The trilogy culminates in an indelible portrait of the Republican fight against Fascist forces in which the Madrid of Barea's childhood becomes a shell and bullet-strewn warzone. Combining historical sweep and authority with poignant characterization and novelistic detail, The Forging of a Rebel is a towering literary and historical achievement.

Book For Whom the Bell Tolls

Download or read book For Whom the Bell Tolls written by Ernest Hemingway and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Jordan is an American who lived in prewar Spain and fights as an irregular soldier for the Republic against Francisco Franco's fascist forces. An experienced dynamiter, he is ordered by a Soviet general to travel behind enemy lines and destroy a bridge with the aid of a band of local anti-fascist guerrillas to prevent enemy troops from responding to an upcoming offensive. On his mission, Jordan meets María, a young Spanish woman whose life has been shattered by her parents' execution and her rape at the hands of the Falangists (part of the fascist coalition) at the outbreak of the war. His strong sense of duty clashes with both the unwillingness of the guerrilla leader Pablo to commit to an operation that would endanger himself and his band and Jordan's own new-found lust for life, which arises from his love for María. But times are such that love cannot survive and blossom in the midst of intrigue, betrayal, cruelty and death. The novel is based on Hemingway's own experiences during the Spanish Civil War.

For ultimately it’s the reader who authors the fate of the brave youth as he contemplates which of the two doors in the king’s arena he will choose in Frank Stockton’s famous and unforgettable “The Lady, or the Tiger?” And which of the two brothers in three-time Edgar-winner Stanley Ellin’s “Unreasonable Doubt” shoots a bullet square in the middle of their rich uncle’s forehead? And just what not-so-sweet secret is the prim Miss Spence hiding behind her smile in Aldous Huxley’s deliciously enigmatic tale? you decide. In all, as in “The Moment of Decision”?a chilling tale that seals an escape artist inside an airless stone cell with a heavy wooden door, which may or may not open?the moment of decision is yours.

Book Noli Me T ngere Touch Me Not

Download or read book Noli Me T ngere Touch Me Not written by José Rizal and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scorching exposé of the Spanish government's corruption and abuses of power, this novel is famed as a catalyst to the Philippine Revolution. Noli Me Tángere was the first major artistic manifestation of Asian resistance to European colonialism written from the point of view of the oppressed. Its passionate tale of an idealistic young Filipino's challenges to authority plays out against a backdrop of repression, torture, and murder. Author José Rizal (1861–96) was a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which gave voice to a population that had simmered with resentment during three centuries of Spanish rule. Rizal paid with his life for his outspoken writings; a century later, the martyred author remains a symbol of Philippine nationalism as Noli Me Tángere takes its place among the revolutionary classics that have influenced history.

Professor Mandel's general introduction and his shorter introductions and commentaries throughout the book are solid, wise, and engaging."?Robert E. Taylor, Renaissance News "This anthology is exhaustive and informative, expertly translated, and, by virtue of its subject, damned exciting."?Quarterly Journal of Speech "[The translations] are lively and . . . quite faithful to the originals. . . . The long introduction could well stand alone: fruitful in original observations on the nature of Don Juan, spirited, argu-mentative, and quite personal."?Armand F. Singer, Hispania The eternal Don Juan, the creation more than 350 years ago of a monk and dramatist known as Tirso de Molina, has appeared on the boards as a thinker and fool, hero and villain, but never as anything less than a great lover. Oscar Mandel's Theatre of Don Juan presents different aspects of the Don's spectacular progress through a half-dozen countries, epochs, and intellectual climates. Here are full-length plays by Molina, Moli_re, Shadwell, Da Ponte, Grabbe, Moncrieff, Zorrilla, and Rostand; excerpts from plays by Shaw, Montherlant, and Frisch; plus a dozen critical and interpretative essays.
