Download or read book You Are a Data Person written by Amelia Parnell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal and external pressure continues to mount for college professionals to provide evidence of successful activities, programs, and services, which means that, going forward, nearly every campus professional will need to approach their work with a data-informed perspective. But you find yourself thinking “I am not a data person”.Yes, you are. Or can be with the help of Amelia Parnell. You Are a Data Person provides context for the levels at which you are currently comfortable using data, helps you identify both the areas where you should strengthen your knowledge and where you can use this knowledge in your particular university role. For example, the rising cost to deliver high-quality programs and services to students has pushed many institutions to reallocate resources to find efficiencies. Also, more institutions are intentionally connecting classroom and cocurricular learning experiences which, in some instances, requires an increased gathering of evidence that students have acquired certain skills and competencies. In addition to programs, services, and pedagogy, professionals are constantly monitoring the rates at which students are entering, remaining enrolled in, and leaving the institution, as those movements impact the institution’s financial position. From teaching professors to student affairs personnel and beyond, Parnell offers tangible examples of how professionals can make data contributions at their current and future knowledge level, and will even inspire readers to take the initiative to engage in data projects. The book includes a set of self-assessment questions and a companion set of action steps and available resources to help readers accept their identity as a data person. It also includes an annotated list of at least 20 indicators that any higher education professional can examine without sophisticated data analyses.

Book Data Analytics for Discourse Analysis with Python

Download or read book Data Analytics for Discourse Analysis with Python written by Dennis Tay and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise volume, using examples of psychotherapy talk, showcases the potential applications of data analytics for advancing discourse research and other related disciplines. The book provides a brief primer on data analytics, defined as the science of analyzing raw data to reveal new insights and support decision making. Currently underutilized in discourse research, Tay draws on the case of psychotherapy talk, in which clients’ concerns are worked through via verbal interaction with therapists, to demonstrate how data analytics can address both practical and theoretical concerns. Each chapter follows a consistent structure, offering a streamlined walkthrough of a key technique, an example case study, and annotated Python code. The volume shows how techniques such as simulations, classification, clustering, and time series analysis can address such issues as incomplete data transcripts, therapist–client (a)synchrony, and client prognosis, offering inspiration for research, training, and practitioner self-reflection in psychotherapy and other discourse contexts. This volume is a valuable resource for discourse and linguistics researchers, particularly for those interested in complementary approaches to qualitative methods, as well as active practitioners.

Once you left the class, though, you were on your own. Did you know how to create and prepare a dataset for analysis? Did you know how to select and generate appropriate graphics and statistics? Did you wonder why you were forced to take the class and when you would ever use what you learned? That's where Stats with Cats can help you out. The book will show you: How to decide what you should put in your dataset and how to arrange the data. How to decide what graphs and statistics to produce for your data. How you can create a statistical model to answer your data analysis questions. The book also provides enough feline support to minimize any stress you may experience. Book Linguistic analysis of literary data

Download or read book Linguistic analysis of literary data written by Fareed Hameed Al-Hindawi and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary data is supposed to reflect real life situations and is at the same time written in a style of writing that is considered as highly elevated. Such reasons have prompted the contributors to this book to deal with this type of data. Such attempts range from semantics to stylistics and pragmatics. This book introduces linguistic analyses of literary data from different points of view. This involves dealing with various linguistic topics and different types of literary data. Hence, many models are presented to analyze the linguistic aspects of those topics in the light of the genre in which those topics are undertaken. Accordingly, different results are yielded from those analyses and this makes each type of analysis distinct from the other ones. It is hoped that this work will be a useful source to all those – whether theoretically, practically, or both – interested in linguistics, pragmatics of literature, applied linguistics and literary stylistics.

Book Our Bodies Our Data

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adam Tanner
  • Publisher : Beacon Press
  • Release : 2017-01-10
  • ISBN : 0807033359
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Our Bodies Our Data written by Adam Tanner and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the hidden trade in our sensitive medical information became a multibillion-dollar business, but has done little to improve our health-care outcomes Hidden to consumers, patient medical data has become a multibillion-dollar worldwide trade industry between our health-care providers, drug companies, and a complex web of middlemen. This great medical-data bazaar sells copies of the prescription you recently filled, your hospital records, insurance claims, blood-test results, and more, stripped of your name but possibly with identifiers such as year of birth, gender, and doctor. As computing grows ever more sophisticated, patient dossiers become increasingly vulnerable to reidentification and the possibility of being targeted by identity thieves or hackers. Paradoxically, comprehensive electronic files for patient treatment—the reason medical data exists in the first place—remain an elusive goal. Even today, patients or their doctors rarely have easy access to comprehensive records that could improve care. In the evolution of medical data, the instinct for profit has outstripped patient needs. This book tells the human, behind-the-scenes story of how such a system evolved internationally. It begins with New York advertising man Ludwig Wolfgang Frohlich, who founded IMS Health, the world’s dominant health-data miner, in the 1950s. IMS Health now gathers patient medical data from more than 45 billion transactions annually from 780,000 data feeds in more than 100 countries. Our Bodies, Our Data uncovers some of Frohlich’s hidden past and follows the story of what happened in the following decades. This is both a story about medicine and medical practice, and about big business and maximizing profits, and the places these meet, places most patients would like to believe are off-limits. Our Bodies, Our Data seeks to spark debate on how we can best balance the promise big data offers to advance medicine and improve lives while preserving the rights and interests of every patient. We, the public, deserve a say in this discussion. After all, it’s our data.

Book Second Language Learning Data Analysis

Download or read book Second Language Learning Data Analysis written by Susan M. Gass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this workbook is to provide students with practice in analyzing second language data. For the student of second language learning, "hands-on" experience with actual data is essential in understanding the processes involved in learning a second language. Working through exemplars of the kinds of interlanguages that learners do and do not create brings about a clearer understanding of the principles underlying these interlanguages, as well as the universal principles of language learning (those that are independent of particular languages and interlanguages). The goal in this workbook is to present data organized in such a way that by working through pedagogically presented data-sets, students are led to a discovery and understanding of theoretical and/or methodological issues. In addition, they acquire the ability to interpret data and to begin to draw conclusions from them. The authors intend that students should go from the data to a conclusion that includes a 3-part statement: *what else you should want to know about these data; *why this, specifically, and not something else; and *how one can empirically research what you want to find out. This sequence of questions forces students to constantly keep in mind the important question of falsification: What kind of data would it take to falsify the particular conclusions the students come to? As with the earlier edition of this workbook (Sorace, Gass, & Selinker), two audiocassettes provide language samples for use in the exercises. These cassettes and the teacher's manual are offered free of charge on adoption of the workbook for classroom use; a three-part set (workbook/manual/tapes) is also available.
