Born after the Civil War in north east Texas, Jerrell Dean Porter was the only daughter of Robert Terrell Porter a wealthy liberal Christian Plantation owner who was also a former slave owner, and Louisa Love (Lou) a 15 year old former slave girl from the Porter Plantation. Because of her appearance, and an elaborate deception, Jerrell Dean Porter passed for white while being raised by her aunt Pearlee. She would eventually choose love over privilege and fully embrace the ramifications of her choice. Its a story about love and lust, of loyalty and betrayal, of evil and kindness, tolerance, compassion, respect and hope. Its a story about the slow progress of fairness and personal freedom against tremendous and formidable obstacles like constant threats of violence, racism, sexism and homophobia. This entertaining story is full of colorful characters with a wide variety of twists and unexpected turns.

Book Could It Be

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph C. Way
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2007-02-06
  • ISBN : 1412205050
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Could It Be written by Joseph C. Way and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could It Be? focuses on twelve biblical passages. Most of them have been denigrated or disregarded, either by those who want nothing to do with organized religion or by others who claim to be genuinely Christian. The author reclaims those discarded gems, proclaims those stories as relevent, countermands erroneous interpretations and counteracts the results of misinformation about their meaning and purpose. The book is designed to stir the status quo and begins the stirring process by reexamining old passages from a new approad. Its author believes the only road leading to intellectual and spriritual growth runs through the crowded and musty city of "Old Ideas" and winds through the treacherous valley of "New Possibilities." That is the basic outline for every chapter in this book. Each chapter identifies problematical interpretations of some ingrained religious ideas and offers new possibilities that enrich Christian living. Biblical requirements considered impossible to follow are interpreted as very doable. The uppermost question for each reader to keep in mind is, "Could it be this passage is very different than I originally thought?" Throughout the book, the author repeatedly affirms God is at work in common places, events and things. Biblical stories about personal deliverance and radical change were frequently facilitated by something quite ordinary. What we called a miracle was often an ordinary act for God. If that is how God works, he regularly offers "miracles" to everyone, not just to special people in special situations. These passages about miracles, admonitions and probing questions are prototypes of the human condition, making them extremely relevant because they are "OUR STORY" too.

Book From Before the Beginning to Forevermore

Download or read book From Before the Beginning to Forevermore written by Judy Knapp and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know some of the stories from the Bible? There's the story of how God created the earth; Noah and the ark; Joseph and his coat of many colors; Moses and the burning bush; David and the giant, Goliath; the story of Jesus's birth; many stories of Jesus healing people; and, of course, the wonderful story of the first Easter. Did you ever wonder how each of these stories and many others were chosen to be in the Bible and how they fit together? Each of these small stories is part of a much, much larger story. Now most stories begin and end. They start with "once upon a time" and end with "they lived happily ever after." The Bible is different because it is God's story, and He is a forever God. His story goes "from before the beginning" and continues "to forevermore," and it is all about His big plan for you and me. Are you interested in learning more? I should warn you that since God is so big, His story takes a bit of brain stretching to understand. But don't worry, brain stretching is not painful.

Book word on the street eBook

Download or read book word on the street eBook written by Rob Lacey and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who’ve never read the Bible and for those who’ve read it too much. Lacey’s “dangerously real” retelling of Scripture vividly demonstrates that the Bible is packed full of stories, poems, and images that resonate with the big issues of today. This fresh paraphrase-come-running-commentary brings the text alive: Bible stories are retold as mini blockbusters; psalms as song lyrics; epistles as emails; Revelation as seen through a virtual reality headset. Out with stale religious terms, here’s a “Bible” which talks today’s language—gritty, earthy, and witty. Enough starting at Genesis with good intentions and getting lost in Leviticus-Lacey succeeds in revitalizing a classic work by focusing on the big picture: fast-forwarding through the “slow-moving” bits with pace, passion, and energy to make the Bible a page turner. Lacey’s tour de force was created during a remarkable personal journey through terminal cancer: the stuff Bible stories are made of. This life-experience injects Lacey’s take on Scripture with authenticity and authority—resonating with Bible characters who also wrestled with the big questions. Purist alert: This is not THE Bible (capital B)… but it might just get you reaching for one.

Book excerpt: Preface This book has been in the works approximately thirty-seven years. When I was twenty-two, I knew I was going to write a book. I just didn't know what the topic would be or where it would go. That was in the days of manual typewriters. Functional home computers with word processing were still about eight years away. It wasn't until about two years ago in the spring of 2010 that I felt it was time to write. I toyed with a couple of different themes since biblical prophecy was my prime interest. However, as the writing progressed, I felt the Lord directing me to write the story of my journey from religion in the Roman Catholic tradition to a Bible-based, personal relationship with God as the creator of the universe. I grew up attending Catholic schools and my experiences are very similar to thousands of others who have attend parochial school. It was a great experience and solid educationally. It just wasn't fulfilling spiritually. I don't focus on the political and social issues facing the Catholic Church, as some folks have. I will not Catholic-bash. If anything, I have tried to be evenhanded concerning my experiences growing up Catholic and those of dealing with my Protestant Christian friends. There will be some things said in this book that will cause my Catholic friends to cringe. There will also be some conclusions with which my Protestant friends will disagree. The story is my personal journey and one I am happy to share. It is the story of my journey from religion to relationship, and my personal view from the pew.

Book excerpt: For aeons the universe has been ruled by the council of the Educational and Scientific Research Anomaly (ESRA). Their CEO, Draper, has developed a program of sending trainees to manage emerging planetary systems according to the ESRA doctrine of "create life in your own image." Draper sends what seems to be his favourite trainee, God, to the Sun system in the Milky Way to do just that, but, unbeknown to Draper, God has his own theory on life creation called evolution. God sets evolution in motion on the planet he has called Earth but when the development is too slow he starts to meddle with the process causing the planet to be populated by giant creatures he calls dinosaurs. He reports back to Draper who strangely, rather than giving him a bollicking, summons the Intergalactic Trouble-shooter, Armageddon, to help....... Armageddon manages to sort most of the problems and gradually gets seduced into helping God with his other hare-brained scheme called religion. Religion takes off in different forms so God sets himself up to become a Messiah to unite them all. The plan falters when he gets a local girl pregnant but Armageddon comes up with an idea that will make the child, Jesus Christ, the said Messiah. It all goes pear shaped when the local authorities crucify Jesus but Armageddon spirits him back to ESRA where they attempt to save his life. The ruling council aren't happy but they are sufficiently intrigued with evolution and religion that they approve a watching brief on Earth. As the planet sinks into a mess of wars, conflict and religious intolerance Armageddon finds a loophole in the directive and he and God help out where they can while preparing for the return of Jesus.

Book The Old Testament in the Layman s Language

Download or read book The Old Testament in the Layman s Language written by Leroy Stout and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy presents information that allows the reader to retain what is read. For example, the major prophets can be remembered using the term JEDI from the Star Wars movie, J -Jeremiah, E – Ezekiel, D – Daniel, I – Isaiah. Roy reveals some of God’s humor. 1 Kings 11:29-31. Jereboam meets the prophet Ahiah, who demonstrates that Jereboam will rule 10 0f the 12 tribes of Israel by cutting Jereboam’s “new garment” into 12 pieces and giving Jereboam 10. There he stands in his diaper holding 10 rags. Try explaining that to a stranger. The Bible does tell of more serious moments such as 2 Kings 15. During the captivity, All 18 kings of the northern kingdom were bad. The last five kings became kings by murdering their predecessor, We could say the KKK existed i.e, Kings Killing Kings. Some critical information is not obvious. Who is “us” in Genesis 1:26? I And God said let us make man in our image.... Us is the trinity, God, Jesus, The Holy Spirit. They are mentioned in the first chapter of the bible. Roy brings to life the actions of biblical characters is an easy to understand manner that helps to understand scripture. Lets consider the Noah flood. The flood occurred 10 generations after Adam. The average age before the flood was 858 and after the flood it was 317. In order to compare this to today, we divide each side by 10 and get 86 and 32 ie, people died at 32 instead of the normal 86, Why? Solar radiation. We sent wasp larvae into space and proved this theory. The “windows of heaven” were the cooling clouds of a new planet. It had not rained since God created earth Gen 2:5. Water came from two directions, rain and flooding ie, Genesis 7:11. Roy also covers the activities between the Old and New testaments including Persia, Greece, Macabeans and Rome.

"Jeremy does an amazing job of using that [musical] bond as a backbone to a dizzying adventure--one that deals with life, death, humor, loss, prejudices, love, and of course music. I very simply loved it." -Eric Church, Country Music Artist "The DeVine Devils is an exceptionally well-written and fantastically entertaining novel. Jeremy Spillman shines as an author with this release, pushing forward a fast-moving and wholly engrossing narrative, particularly in the dialogue of his characters. The plot is original, something that's not easy to find when talking about Western literature. "-- Readers' Favorite "Prolific country songwriter Spillman moves into narrative fiction with a unique spin on the Wild West genre, combining outlaw violence with rock-star fame. . . Nonstop action, with two murderous heroes that Western fans will love."--Kirkus Reviews "I read Jeremy Spillman's book because I know him and am a fan of his as a songwriter and as a man. I also love westerns although they usually disappoint me as they are often formulaic and have no interesting female characters. I may have opened Jeremy's book with a sigh of trepidation, but I closed it with a sigh of true disappointment that it was over. It is funny, unpredictable, musical, mysterious and yes! There are strong female characters! Badass even! You will not have read another Western like it! Enjoy!" -- Mary Steenburgen, Academy Award Winning Actress and Film Producer "I've been a fan of Jeremy Spillman as a songwriter for as long as I can remember. Like his songs, his debut book illustrates the perfect landscape across the imagination. You can almost feel the midwestern heat on your skin. The DeVine DeVils is a fresh new story, yet reads like an American classic we've all grown up with." -- John Osborne, Country Music Band Brothers Osborne "I grew up in Arizona and I devoured every Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour book ever written. Jeremy has taken that genre which I loved so much and added a new exciting energy! The characters were so dangerous and likable all at the same time. I never quite knew where it was going, which was so appealing to me as a reader. I was blown away. I seriously loved it."-- Ted Danson, Emmy Award Winning Actor "Spillman has managed to take the classic Wild West genre and deliver an absolute page turner with a brand new spin. An intoxicating journey with two brothers who must learn to navigate love, lust, vengeance, violence, and even religion all with the only companion they know to trust . . . music." -- Brandon Lancaster, Country Rock Band LANCO Available where music is streamed and sold, the Devine Devils EP features songs written and produced by author and award-winning songwriter Jeremy Spillman and performed by the DeVine Devils.
