Download or read book Yo Mama written by Onwuchekwa Jemie and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected primarily in metropolitan New York and Philadelphia during the classic era of black street poetry (i.e., during the late 1960s and early 1970s) these raps, signifyings, toasts, boasts, jokes and children's rhymes will delight general readers as well as scholars. Ranging from the simple rhymes that accompany children's games to verbally inventive insults and the epic exploits of traditional characters like Shine and Stagger Lee, these texts sound the deep rivers of culture, echoing two continents. Onwuchekwa Jemie's introductory essay situates them in a globally pan-African context and relates them to more recent forms of oral culture such as rap and spoken word.

Download or read book The Playmates of Harvest View written by Doris Christian-Johnson and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Playmates of Harvest View is an absorbing story of deception, romance, forbidden desires, murder, and greed. In a small, secluded close-knit community in the state of Missouri, three sisters—Rebecca, Neaverna, and Samantha Palermo—like most, enjoyed the security and tranquility, until that late afternoon in June. Their peaceful lives were splintered when Rebecca went missing, and later found raped and murdered. Her friends and male playmates, Thaddeus Kennedy, Jeremy Browriskyzcoff-Mancina, Joel Earl Baptista, and Joseph Mancina, vowed to avenge her death in later years, at any cost. The suspects, Peter Cruzada and his friends, Timothy Monacelli, Sampson Durgard, and Travis Harvey, were the teenage sons of super rich and powerful parents, who lived the lives of luxury in the suburbs. They were the elites of society and deemed the pillars of their community. At an early age, the little band of boys' child play turned into something far greater than anything one could've ever imagined. Their cruel behaviors landed them in juvenile detention facilities. This was just the beginning of a life that placed the group of boys on the wrong side of the law. In later years, a rash of murders and heavy drug trafficking throughout the United States, Canada, South and Central America, and the Caribbean islands came to the attention of the United States government. Their investigation of these crime sprees led them to the tight closed doors of Peter, and his gang. The gang had grown into a well-organized drug cartel. The world was their playground, and they had become the untouchables. The Central Intelligence Agency Special Task Force was formed, and Thaddeus was the CIA agent who was appointed to oversee the operation. His job was to apprehend Peter and his gang, by any means necessary. He recruited his friends, who were also his childhood playmates, to assist him in apprehending the gang. They never thought that their innocent child play of crooks and robbers would manifest into real-life drama. The relentless manhunt led them to the other side of the world, and back again. Things intensified when they learned that their former classmate, Karen Shaw, was part of the gang. She was dubbed the Gutsy Missouri Bad Girl. Fearless and bold beyond the meaning of the word, she craved bloodshed, which was evidenced in the string of murder victims that she left in every path that she chose to travel. Already faced with unimaginable danger, even death, the Central Intelligence Agency Special Task Force discovered that Peter and his gang had joined forces with a few dirty CIA agents. Driven by greed and the desire to control the underground world, the gang clashed with the mighty playmates of Harvest View. In a bloody showdown in Las Vegas, Nevada, their reign of terror came to an end. Through the years, dating all the way back to their childhood, the playmates of Harvest View's relationships with the sisters of the murdered girl progressed to matrimony, and a lifestyle of class and distinction. Easily said, but not so easily done. This superbly crafted novel has near-perfect balance of action and will attract readers from multiple genres. It's filled with vivid characters whom you would fall in love with, and some you would love to hate. The dramatic actions of these characters pull the readers into incredible sequences of jaw-dropping, spellbinding, and page-turning suspense.

Download or read book Race Talk in a Mexican Cantina written by Tatcho Mindiola and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People avoid speaking about race in the presence of another racial group for fear of saying something wrong and creating friction. This was not the situation at JB’s, a small Mexican cantina located in one of Houston’s oldest Mexican barrios. Mexicans made up most of the regular patrons, but a small number of whites also visited the bar on a regular basis. This situation created the circumstances for race talk in which the Mexican patrons needled and criticized the white patrons because of their whiteness. The white patrons likewise criticized the Mexican patrons, but their remarks were not as strident in comparison to those they received. When Tatcho Mindiola visited the bar and heard the race talk, he realized that it was a unique situation. He thus became a regular patron, and over a three-year period kept notes on the racial exchanges he observed and heard, which form the basis of this insightful volume.

Download or read book Voices from the African American Village written by Charles E. E Becknell Sr. PhD and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many African Americans who grew up in the pre-civil rights era, the segregated community was usually referred to as a village. This was the origination of the phrase, "It takes a village to raise a child." The voices that came out of the village were voices that are now becoming diminished. These voices helped to keep the culture intact. The voices from the elderly, the parents, the church, and the community-provided discipline, hope, pride, and integrity for the inhabitants. Many may feel that some of the messages were crude or inappropriate, but we have to take into account the lack of educational opportunities during this time. This book attempts to capture the messages that we need to not only remember, but respect. These voices helped us to survive racism and discrimination. The voices of the village are still relevant today and should not be forgotten.
Download or read book Incognegro written by Frank B. Wilderson III and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, a South African journalist informed Frank Wilderson, one of only two American members of the African National Congress (ANC), that President Nelson Mandela considered him "a threat to national security." Wilderson was asked to comment. Incognegro is that "comment." It is also his response to a question posed five years later in a California university classroom: "How come you came back?" Although Wilderson recollects his turbulent life as an expatriate during the furious last gasps of apartheid, Incognegro is at heart a quintessentially American story. During South Africa's transition, Wilderson taught at universities in Johannesburg and Soweto by day. By night, he helped the ANC coordinate clandestine propaganda, launch psychological warfare, and more. In this mesmerizing political memoir, Wilderson's lyrical prose flows from unspeakable dilemmas in the red dust and ruin of South Africa to his return to political battles raging quietly on US campuses and in his intimate life. Readers will find themselves suddenly overtaken by the subtle but resolute force of Wilderson's biting wit, rare vulnerability, and insistence on bearing witness to history no matter the cost.
