Book Don t Flatter Yourself Revisited

Download or read book Don t Flatter Yourself Revisited written by Sydney Salier and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I came up with the concept for 'Don't flatter yourself', I had two options. One, in which Mrs Francine Bennet played down the fact of her background, which made Darcy think Elizabeth was beneath him. Two, in which Lady Francine and Lady Elizabeth were open about their status (although maybe not about the extent of Elizabeth's dowry) and Darcy has no hesitation about wanting to court Elizabeth.I decided to write version one, but the second version wouldn't leave me in peace and wanted to be written as well.So here it is.________________________________________________In the original P&P Mr Darcy had an issue with the behaviour of Mrs Bennet and Elizabeth's younger sisters, as well as their social standing. What if Mr Bennet married a second time and his new wife is a Lady with impeccable manners, whose daughter, from her first marriage to the Earl Fellmar, is Lady Elizabeth. Will Mr Darcy's pride still be an issue?Or will Lady Elizabeth's prejudice be a problem?Or both? What will it take for two proud people to find their happily ever after?

Book excerpt: After twenty years of what most would consider a good marriage, Clarissa - an attractive, talented, forty-something schoolteacher in the North of England - begins to sense an increasing dissatisfaction with life. During her first research trip to Dorset in the hope of gaining inspiration to write, she meets and falls in love with Sam Melsonby. He reciprocates her feelings and encourages her talent by engaging her as a scriptwriter for The Group, a small, modestly funded outfit producing various arts projects. He is researching Thomas Hardy for a possible film and Clarissa, in true Hardy fashion, feels that Destiny has played a hand in their meeting. As she researches material for her novel and the script of an arts film for television, she is painfully aware of the resonances between herself and Eustacia Vye - the somewhat indolent, dreamy and romantic heroine of Hardys The Return of the Native. Her conscience is stung by discovering the bleak biography of Emma Bailey, who was briefly part of Hardys household. Poor, seduced, weighed down by the responsibility of caring for a young child, she resorts to backbreaking labour and ,ultimately, prostitution, to keep body and soul together, She pulls herself up from degradation to become an art teacher, able to fund her childs education at the Slade School of Art. Clarissas personal and literary life flourish but problems with her family increase. She becomes alienated from her husband and three children for one reason or another and she begins to question the unalloyed pleasure of the search for fulfilling experiences. Various events, some tinged with tragedy determine the course of the rest of her life.

Book Masada Revisited Iii and Other Plays

Download or read book Masada Revisited Iii and Other Plays written by Arthur Ziffer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains six plays with titles: Masada Revisited III Irresistible Impulse Redemption Isaac and Amanda One Plus One Equals One Hypatia Masada Revisited III contains all of the material contained in two other published plays of the author, with titles Masada Revisited and Masada Revisited II, except for two scenes which contain material of a historical and religious nature. Masada is a site in modern-day Israel near the Dead Sea. It was the last stronghold of the Jews in the Jewish War against the Romans which lasted from 66 AD to 70 AD. According to some versions of history the mountain top fortress, Masada, was able to withstand a Roman siege that lasted for three years until 73 AD when the Romans finally captured the fortress. According to the historian Josephus, when the Romans did finally enter the fortress, all they found were dead bodies, except for two women and five children hiding in a cave. Irresistible Impulse had two earlier published versions with titles Death of a Psychiatrist and Retribution. Hypatia is a play about a real woman who lived in Alexandria Egypt in the later part of the fourth century AD and early part of the fifth century AD. The play is only partly historical.

Book Critics of Enlightenment Rationalism Revisited

Download or read book Critics of Enlightenment Rationalism Revisited written by Gene Callahan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-10 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of some of the most important critics of “Enlightenment rationalism.” The subjects of the volume (including, among others, Pascal, Vico, Schmitt, Weber, Anscombe, Scruton, and Tolkien) do not share a philosophical tradition as much as a skeptical disposition toward the notion, common among modern thinkers, that there is only one standard of rationality or reasonableness, and that that one standard is or ought to be taken from the presuppositions, methods, and logic of the natural sciences. The essays on each thinker are intended not merely to offer a commentary on that thinker, but also to place the person in the context of this larger stream of anti-rationalist thought.

A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Book Good Neighbors Bad Times Revisited

Download or read book Good Neighbors Bad Times Revisited written by Mimi Schwartz and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mimi Schwartz's father was born Jewish in a tiny German village thirty years before the advent of Hitler when, as he'd tell her, "We all got along." In her original memoir, Good Neighbors, Bad Times, Schwartz explored how human decency fared among Christian and Jewish neighbors before, during, and after Nazi times. Ten years after its publication, a letter arrived from a man named Max Sayer in South Australia. Sayer, it turns out, grew up Catholic in the village during the Third Reich and in 1937 moved into an abandoned Jewish home five houses away from where the family of Schwartz's father had lived for generations before fleeing to America a few months earlier. The two families had never met. Sayer wrote an unpublished memoir about his childhood memories and in Schwartz's new edition, Good Neighbors, Bad Times Revisited, the two memoirs talk to each other. Weaving excerpts from Sayer's memoir and from a yearlong correspondence with him into her book, Schwartz revisits village history from a new perspective, deepening our understanding of decency and demonization. Given the rise of xenophobia, white supremacy, and anti-Semitism in the world today, this exploration seems more urgent than ever.
