Book Don t Count on It

Download or read book Don t Count on It written by John C. Bogle and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Don't Count On It! "This collection of Jack Bogle's writings couldn't be more timely. The clarity of his thinking—and his insistence on the relevance of ethical standards—are totally relevant as we strive to rebuild a broken financial system. For too many years, his strong voice has been lost amid the cacophony of competing self-interests, misdirected complexity, and unbounded greed. Read, learn, and support Jack's mission to reform the industry that has been his life's work." —PAUL VOLCKER, Chairman of the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board and former Chairman of the Federal Reserve (1979–1987) "Jack Bogle has given investors throughout the world more wisdom and plain financial 'horse sense' than any person in the history of markets. This compendium of his best writings, particularly his post-crisis guidance, is absolutely essential reading for investors and those who care about the future of our society." —ARTHUR LEVITT, former Chairman, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission "Jack Bogle is one of the most lucid men in finance." —NASSIM N.TALEB, PhD, author of The Black Swan "Jack Bogle is one of the financial wise men whose experience spans the post–World War II years. This book, encompassing his insights on financial behavior, pitfalls, and remedies, with a special focus on mutual funds, is an essential read. We can only benefit from his observations." —HENRY KAUFMAN, President, Henry Kaufman & Company, Inc. "It was not an easy sell. The joke at first was that only finance professors invested in Vanguard's original index fund. But what a triumph it has been. And what a focused and passionate drive it took: it is a zero-sum game and only costs are certain. Thank you, Jack." —JEREMY GRANTHAM, Cofounder and Chairman, GMO "On finance, Jack Bogle thinks unconventionally. So, this sound rebel turns out to be right most of the time. Meanwhile, many of us sometimes engage in self-deception. So, this book will set us straight. And in the last few pages, Jack writes, and I agree, that Peter Bernstein was a giant. So is Jack Bogle." —JEAN-MARIE EVEILLARD, Senior Adviser, First Eagle Investment Management Insights into investing and leadership from the founder of The Vanguard Group Throughout his legendary career, John Bogle-founder of the Vanguard mutual fund group and creator of the first index mutual fund-has helped investors build wealth the right way, while, at the same time, leading a tireless campaign to restore common sense to the investment world. A collection of essays based on speeches delivered to professional groups and college students in recent years, in Don't Count on It is organized around eight themes Illusion versus reality in investing Indexing to market returns Failures of capitalism The flawed structure of the mutual fund industry The spirit of entrepreneurship What is enough in business, and in life Advice to America's future leaders The unforgettable characters who have shaped his career Widely acclaimed for his role as the conscience of the mutual fund industry and a relentless advocate for individual investors, in Don't Count on It, Bogle continues to inspire, while pushing the mutual fund industry to measure up to their promise.

Download or read book Don t Count Me Out written by Rafael Alvarez and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Count Me Out chronicles the life of Bruce White from the beginning of his drug use in elementary school through criminal acts fueled by his need for drugs, to his miraculous recovery three decades later and involvement in the treatment of addicts, where he is now a leader in the rehabilitation field. Rafael Alvarez's recounting of White's journey should inspire those dealing with the fallout of addiction. Alvarez, a journalist and screenwriter, allows the reader to get inside the head of an addict who was stealing alcohol from his parents at the age of nine, selling drugs and tripping on LSD and PCP by the time he hit seventh grade, and hooked on morphine before he turned fifteen. "Bruce White? I thought he was dead?" is a response encountered in many of the interviews Alvarez conducted. Don't Count Me Out shines a spotlight on an improbable and stunning miracle. Though this is just one person's story, the contributing factors of early sexual assault, the role of permissive preoccupied parents, and the need for peer approval, among others, will resonate with many as the opioid crisis continues to haunt us.

Book Why Calories Don t Count

Download or read book Why Calories Don t Count written by Giles Yeo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cambridge obesity researcher upends everything we thought we knew about calories and calorie-counting. Calorie information is ubiquitous. On packaged food, restaurant menus, and online recipes we see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume. And we treat these numbers as gospel—counting, cutting, intermittently consuming and, if you believe some 'experts' out there, magically making them disappear. We all know, and governments advise, that losing weight is just a matter of burning more calories than we consume. But it's actually all wrong. In Why Calories Don't Count, Dr. Giles Yeo, an obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, and why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight. Once you understand that calories don't count, you can begin to make different decisions about how you choose to eat, learning what you really need to be counting instead. Practical, science-based and full of illuminating anecdotes, this is the most entertaining dietary advice you'll ever read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just like many Christians around the world, Bishop Wellington Williams is challenged to broaden his understanding and experience a deeper appreciation for the Creator. As a passionate student of the word of God, he understands that sometimes, despite our best efforts, it is easy to become sidetracked as a disciple of Christ Jesus. In an inspirational guide shared to restore confidence, spiritual revitalization, and motivation to a dying church, Bishop Williams relies on scripture to offer insight into the four important dimensions that are essential for a smooth correlation between God and people as well as the existence of humankind on Earth: Listening, Observation, Processing, and Decision-making. While addressing the shortcomings of the church to lead its followers in the right direction through clarity, restoration, strength, and recovery, Bishop Williams reroutes the word of God to its original position in order to restore its purpose and gently remind Christians how simple it is to receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Don’t Count Me Out is a spiritual guide that relies on scripture to lead followers of Christ to the truth and breathe life back into a dying church.

The book takes you from an idyllic childhood on the Jersey Shore in the late 40’s and early 50’s; through the protest days of the 60’s in Berkeley and the S.F. Bay Area counterculture revolution of the 70’s-80’s; to the day after the San Francisco Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my many battles with cancer. I have had cancer six times and I am currently on chemo as maintenance for precaution measures. In addition to cancer, I have had other health issues over the years including two complete knee replacements. This book is also about my life and my children and grandchildren and family, but it is mostly to show people there is life after cancer and to never give up. I was born into humble beginnings in a little town called Bluff City, Virginia. I was one of six siblings. I had two brothers and three sisters. I was the next to last. We didnt have much growing up, but we had each other and a lot of love. I went to school in Narrows, Virginia and graduated in 1964. I met my husband, Roy, in 1967 and we were married a year later after his tour of duty in Vietnam. We had two boys, Randy and Rusty, and three grandchildren. I worked at a local factory for 37 years until my retirement in 2004. I have always loved to write. I have written many poems and stories, mostly for personal use. This is my first book, but I felt I had a story to tell and I hope it will encourage others who are either going through the same battle or who have been through it.
