Byron completed 16 songs, leaving song 17 unfinished because of his death in 1824. Byron claimed that he had no ideas in his mind as to what would happen in subsequent songs when writing his work. When the first two songs were published anonymously in 1819, the poem was criticized for its "immoral content", although it was also very popular. The story, told over seventeen songs, begins with the birth of Don Juan. As a young man he is sexually precocious and has an affair with a friend of his mother.Her husband finds out and Don Juan is sent to Cádiz. On the way he is shipwrecked but survives and meets the daughter of a pirate, whose crew sells Don Juan as a slave. The wife of a wealthy sultan buys Don Juan and disguises him as a woman so that he can sneak him into his palace. Don Juan escapes, joins the Russian army, and rescues a Muslim girl named Leila. Don Juan meets Catalina la Grande, who asks him to join his court.

The reader of poetry can consider many more contexts, such as those supplied by his or her familiarity with other works by the same author and with literary tradition. The theoretical basis of this study resides in an analysis of Ferdinand de Saussure's distinction between "langue" and "parole" and approaches to textual criticism predicated on this distinction, which is most clearly evident in the theoretical studies of the Russian Formalists. On the firm basis of an understanding of the difference between poetry and nonliterary prose this study unravels the issues which surround the prominence of words derived from the verbs "wandern" and "to wander" in German nd English respectively in such celebrated poems as "Wandrers Nachtlied," "I wandered lonely as a cloud" and William Blake's "London.:

In 1819 Keats wrote what many consider his greatest poetry. This was the year of Shelley's Prometheus Unbound, The Cenci, and Ode to the West Wind. Wordsworth published his most widely reviewed work, Peter Bell, and the craze for Walter Scott's historical novels reached its zenith. Many of these writings explicitly engaged with the politics of representation in 1819, especially the great movement for reform that was fueled by threats of mass emigration to America and came to a head that August with an unprovoked attack on unarmed men, women, and children in St. Peter's Field, Manchester, a massacre that journalists dubbed "Peterloo." But the year of Peterloo in British history is notable for more than just the volume, value, and topicality of its literature. Much of the writing from 1819, argues James Chandler, was acutely aware not only of its place in history, but also of its place as history - a realization of a literary "spirit of the age" that resonates strongly with the current "return to history" in literary studies. Chandler explores the ties between Romantic and contemporary historicism, such as the shared tendency to seize a single dated event as both important on its own and as a "case" testing general principles. To animate these issues, Chandler offers a series of cases of his own built around key texts from 1819.
